    We have 4 years to get all ready. Look out 2025. Acquiring lots of information on 36-39 footers and Coast Guard training courses, HAM radios and equipment and the like. Hope we can stay stoked for 4years.

      David Ingraham guess we will be a couple years behind you. Looking at 2027-2028. Been researching the carver 466 for us. A lot to learn. Can’t wait

    My lady and I are considering retiring on the Loop - I can't wait. Summers in Canada and the Great lakes, Winters in south Florida, the Keys or Bahamas with great fishing, wildlife and beautiful scenery just outside the door. I never want to see another 90-100+ degree summer day again - ever.

    First one through 1997 under Captain Robert Lee Creamer. Early and cold with a fair amount of delays 75 days total. Otherwise incredible experience. Bristol single screw trawler fully rebuilt.

    Starting next summer I will be sailing the Bird of Dawning around the Great Loop from southern Florida and will continue to do so for the next few years exploring our great nation!

    Excellent video. I would have liked if you could have shown some of what it was like to travel from Chicago to St Louis in more detail.

    Such a blessing to find you!
    I told my wife about my plans to take her and she's excited, to my surprise. She so excited, she's invited her mom and dad and sister,....... 😐😑🙄😬. Clearly, we're gonna need a bigger boat.
    My question to you, if you don't mind:
    is a 65' L 14.5'beam with 3.5' draft and 12' bridge clearance, too big for the entire Loop? Canada route, West Erie Canal, including all of the downtown Chicago waterways?

    • @kimberlyrusso3852
      @kimberlyrusso3852 Рік тому

      With the specifications you listed, you should have no trouble with the route. 12' can clear all of the fixed bridges and 3.5' draft is about typical for Loopers.

  • @agrahazl
    @agrahazl 8 днів тому

    Looking to use a 78 with shallow 4.6 draft and 20ft beam. There has to be a way through. Maybe bypass Ill. and go Ohio river down to Ole' Miss. Stupid rail bridge anyway and nobody wants to goto to or through Chicago anyway.

    • @GreatLoop
      @GreatLoop  8 днів тому

      Unfortunately, if you want to do the entire Great Loop, there is no alternate route around the 19.6 foot railroad bridge outside Chicago on the Illinois River at mile 300.5.

    With the new announcement from the Elon Musk’s Starlight business about them opening up their low orbit, anywhere in the continental USA, unlimited, $99/month 50 Mbps high speed satellite internet, the ability for pre-retirement loopers to work from their boat on the loop will soon be far more practical. How soon? How about by the end of 2020 soon!

  • @music-jj2pl

    Hard to do in a sailboat unless you can lower the mast and motor under that 19.6 ft bridge. Where is this bridge?

    • @GreatLoop
      @GreatLoop  3 роки тому +1

      The 19.6' bridge it on the Illinois Waterway at mile marker 300.5. There are also low bridges on the New York Canals that will require a sailboat to lower the mast.

    • @glutenfreegam3r177
      @glutenfreegam3r177 2 роки тому

      most sailors have their mast unstepped for a portion of the Great Loop. Some sailboats have a tabernacle mounted mast which allows the crew to drop the mast with ease,

    What about the maximum vessel beam that can pass through (e.g. catamarans or trimarans)?

    • @GreatLoop
      @GreatLoop  5 років тому +4

      If you want to do the Trent Severn part of the route, the maximum beam is 23 feet. If you're okay skipping that part and taking the route through Lake Erie and past Detroit, then there isn't really a limit to beam.

    what is the cost (oil, etc ) for the great loop?

    • @GreatLoop
      @GreatLoop  3 роки тому

      The costs vary quite a lot depending on your vessel selection and your cruising style. More information is available in our Introduction to the Great Loop full webinar (ua-cam.com/video/hlv2RNE9eLk/v-deo.html) or on our website (www.greatloop.org). AGLCA members have access to a Cost of Looping calculator to help them estimate their costs based on their boat and cruising style (speed, anchorages vs. marinas, etc)

    Do you need a passport

    • @GreatLoop
      @GreatLoop  2 роки тому

      You can do the Great Loop remaining completely in the U.S, in which case a passport would not be needed for U.S. Citizens. If you decide to do the Canadian part of the Loop, or go to the Bahamas as a side trip, a passport is needed,
