Excellent solution!! I did much the same thing. I made mine to accommodate 2 trikes ( not at the same time) my wife has an ICE RS the width between the front wheels is narrower than my Catrike Villager, so I made 2 different sets of rails, no problem. When we ride 1 trike goes in the car ( Highlander) the other on the carrier. If I go myself I put mine ( Villager)goes on the carrier for convenience. I am still considering other options. I have to admit I probably spent more in time and money than had I just bought one already made but I have the time and resource to tinker and I am happy with what I have concocted. Side note -- if you do this make sure your car tag is visible, check with the local authority sorry I have no pix Thank you Mr. Shaw for posting!!!
I build this carrier and like it very much. However the 1" aluminum angle stock (0.125") was too weak. I've ordered some 1" square aluminum extrusion (80/20 Inc 10 Series 1” x 1” Aluminum Extrusion Part #1010) that should be much stronger. Paid $13 for each 4' length on ebay plus $10.50 shipping.
It is a 2013 Prius. It did not come with a hitch, the dealer had it installed at my request. Any U-Haul location should be able to install one on your Prius.
Nope. I'd be too worried about other cars side swiping the boom which sticks out beyond your car width. Too many distracted divers who are too impatient and narcissistic in today's society. Perhaps in a perfect world or past generations.

I am planning on copying this setup for my trike. Thanks for the video.
So simple. I was trying to visualize trike in line with car, not perpendicular. Perpendicular works so much better.
Genius! Thanks for sharing. Looks easy to make with a few simple tools, too.
That is what I’m planning to do great idea. I bet you every great low cost DYI invention turned into a high cost business.
That's pretty good . . .
I'm not so sure about the overhanging chainring or even the rear wheel. Looks like a problem in the making.
Hélio there, thanks for the demonstration
I am currently adapting this design to mount on a Swingaway (Stowaway) Rack. I'll post a picture once it's complete.
Where do you purchase the aluminum angle iron from
How did you attach the seat pad so it won’t blow off while driving?
I didn't. I just took it off and put it in the car.

Alan Friedman where did you purchase the aluminum for the bike carrier
Simple problem solver. I took mine a step further and took it down to less than half the weight. Wish I could send you a picture of it. Joe
I'd like to see it as well. I'm looking for something to carry my catrike with my 2005 Prius. THANKS!
The rack isn't very heavy to begin with. How did you cut weight?
You’ll need a Prius due to all the gas you would burn with a conventional car lol.
What Prius do you have that has a trailer hitch? my Prius is 13 years old and I don’t see a trailer hitch. I would love to use your design!

Cool!
