@@2Passports1Dream Even though I've been to Spain once only, I visited many places. As soon as we arrived in Madrid, we went straight to Atocha station to take a fast train to Seville, spent 3 days 2 nights in the city. The visit to the Seville Cathedral was my first UNESCO world heritage site. From there onwards, we were on a roadtrip on a tour bus. Along the journey we stopped at many beautiful towns and city like Jerez. After Seville, we went to Torremolinos, Costa Del Sol, spent only spent 2 days one night. From Torremolinos, we headed to Granada for another 3 days 2 nights. I was amazed being in Al Hambra, another beautiful UNESCO world heritage site in Spain. Sierra Nevada, a snowy mountain ski resort, was a bonus excursion that wasn't in the itinerary in the first place. I had my first cherry coke there in 1996. Until now, there's no cherry coke in Malaysia. We also saw a Flamenco dance performance in the city. From Granada, we went back to Madrid, passing Cadiz, lots of windmills and olive orchards. At Madrid, we spent the final 3 days 2 nights in Spain, visited the magnificent UNESCO world heritage sites of the Grand Palace and Prado Museum that display beautiful huge paintings. I went to the Hard Rock Cafe Madrid to buy some lovely souvenirs. I fell in love with Madrid at an early spring. Still dreaming of visiting Europe again and keeping my dreams alive. Above all, I'm really glad to see that you guys made your amazing roadtrip.😀
@@2Passports1Dream Oops. Sorry. The Plaza Espana was my first visit to a UNESCO world heritage site in Spain, not the cathedral in Seville. We went there straight from the train station as soon as we arrived in Seville before we checked in the hotel, it was more than 27 years ago. Unfortunately, we didn't get to visit inside the Plaza as it was undergoing restoration at that time. I can't believe I still remember the little details after all these years. 😀

It was indeed a Stein. Stein = 'stone' so the sort of ceramic/stone ones are called steins. The glass ones (that most people call a stein) is called a Maßkrug.... Stein is easier to say I guess 😅

The mug is called Stein in english, however, we do not use that in Germany. But the mug is made from "Steinzeug" or stoneware, and that is where the english name comes from. And yes, you can eat the Flammkuchen with your hands, they should be really thin and normally there is only little ham and onions on it.

@@2Passports1Dream And btw - Flammkuchen is not the "German version of a pizza", it is popular in Germany but originally comes from France, more precisely from Alsace and Lorraine.
It comes from the time when there were still large bread ovens in every village. The bakers would use thinly rolled bread dough to test whether the oven was hot enough to bake a loaf of bread, and they topped the 'tarte flambée' to have a little fun with it, not just a test object. Since the two regions changed their nationality between French and German several times due to some wars, it made its way to Germany too. Yours looked very delicious!

Beautiful, beautiful presentation of Mosel wines ;-) and my favourite city in Germany: Heidelberg ❤ It's one of the few old German cities not being bombed during WWII (story goes that an American general loved it too much...) and of course so nicely situated next to the river Neckar. A somewhat late comment but perhaps somewhat informative about the castle and bridge. A very brief history which shows that the castle also had very important historical influences.
The Castle
The red sandstone from which the castle was built comes from the local Neckar valley.
Around 1182, Conrad the Hohenstaufen, half-brother of Emperor Frederick I Barbarossa and Count Palatine of the Rhine since 1156, moved his court from Stahleck Castle near Bacharach on the Middle Rhine to Heidelberg Castle, his seat as bailiff of Schönau Monastery in the Odenwald.
The town of Heidelberg is first mentioned in a document in 1196. A castle in Heidelberg ("castrum in Heidelberg cum burgo ipsius castri") is mentioned in 1225, when Ludwig the Kelheimer received this castle as a fief from Bishop Heinrich of Worms. In 1214, the Dukes of Bavaria from the House of Wittelsbach were enfeoffed with the Palatinate.
The last mention of a castle dates back to 1294. In a document from 1303, two castles are mentioned for the first time: the upper castle on the "Kleiner Gaisberg - little Gaisberg) near today's Molkenkur (one of the station from the cable car) and the lower castle on the Jettenbühl (todays Spot of the castle). For a long time, the view prevailed among researchers that the lower castle must have been founded between 1294 and 1303, especially as the meticulous building survey carried out by the castle construction office in the second half of the 19th century came to the conclusion that the building fabric did not justify dating the castle before the 15th century. Based on architectural finds and more recent architectural archaeological investigations, however, recent research on Heidelberg Castle now dates the construction of the lower castle to the first half of the 13th century.
Initially conceived as a castle, it was later expanded into a palace and served as the residence of the Electors of the Palatinate (the Counts Palatine of the Rhine) for almost three centuries. As a result, the castle was an important place of courtly and aristocratic life in the Holy Roman Empire. During the Palatinate War of Succession (1688-1697), it was the victim of double destruction.
Beside a Royal palace it was also a papal prison
When Ruprecht III became German King (Ruprecht I) in 1401, there was such a shortage of space in the palace that he had to set up his court camp in the Augustinian monastery (now University Square) on his return from the royal coronation. It was now necessary to create space for representation and to accommodate the officials and courtiers. At the same time, the castle had to be expanded into a fortress. The oldest parts of the castle visible today date from around the time of Ruprecht III.
After Ruprecht's death in 1410, the domain was divided among his four sons. The Palatinate ancestral lands went to the eldest son, Louis III. After the Council of Constance in 1415, Ludwig, as the emperor's deputy and supreme judge, brought the deposed Pope John XXIII into custody at the castle on behalf of King Sigismund before he was taken to Eichelsheim Castle (now Mannheim-Lindenhof).
Martin Luther
During the reign of Louis V, Martin Luther, who had come to Heidelberg to defend his theses (Heidelberg Disputation), visited the castle. He was shown around by Count Palatine Wolfgang, Louis V's brother, and later praised the castle's beauty and military equipment in a letter to his friend Georg Spalatin on May 18, 1518.
Elizabeth Stuart
Frederick V, Elector Palatine, who reigned from 1610, married the English king's daughter Elizabeth Stuart in a love match. The great expense he went to for his bride included the construction of the Elizabeth Gate in the palace garden. During his previous stay in England in 1612/1613, the 17-year-old Frederick had also made contact with important architects in the service of the English royal family, who later implemented his plans for the conversion and new construction of Heidelberg Palace. They were Inigo Jones and Salomon de Caus, who both knew each other well and came to Heidelberg with Frederick in 1613. The construction of a huge pleasure garden was soon underway. However, the garden was intended for the plain and now had to be built on the slope of a hill. This first required earthmoving, which contemporaries regarded as the eighth wonder of the world.
Since the powder tower and other elementary buildings and fortifications were blown up by French pioneers on September 6, 1693, the castle was only of limited use. After only partial restoration had begun, a fire caused by a lightning strike on June 24, 1764 finally destroyed further parts of the palace - the restoration was abandoned and the Counts Palatine of the Rhine finally resided in Mannheim Palace from then on.
During the Romantic period, the castle, which had now become a ruin, was stylized as a timeless symbol of the greatness and transience of human endeavour and of a bygone and admirable era due to its location and gradual decay. This role was promoted by the émigré of the French Revolution, Charles de Graimberg, who admired the ruins and financed their preservation for a long time. Thanks to the palace buildings added over several centuries, the palace is home to important focal points of various art-historical movements, such as the Ottheinrichsbau, one of the most important buildings of German Mannerism. Since then, the palace has also been a fixed element in Heidelberg's poetry and central to the perception of Heidelberg as a "romantic" city, which was described by important poets such as Hölderlin and Joseph von Eichendorff.
Today, Heidelberg Castle is one of the most visited tourist attractions in Europe, and the German Pharmacy Museum is also located in its eastern part.
The Bridge
The bridge you saw was the bridge your mother was referring to. It is called Karl-Theodor-Brücke or "Old Bridge". The Old Bridge was built in 1788 under Elector Karl Theodor as the ninth bridge in total at this location from regional red sandstone. Heidelberg was largely spared the destruction of the Second World War. Towards the end of the war, however, the Old Bridge was badly affected: On March 29, 1945, pioneer units of the German Wehrmacht blew up Heidelberg's Neckar bridges as they retreated from the advancing Americans. The fifth and sixth pillars of the Old Bridge were blown up and the three arches they supported collapsed. The demolition was pointless: the very next day, the 63rd US Infantry Division was able to march into Heidelberg without any problems.
Immediately after the end of the war, to the surprise of the American occupiers, the people of Heidelberg decided to rebuild the Old Bridge - in front of the more central Friedrichsbrücke (now the Theodor Heuss Bridge). A fundraising campaign was launched, which raised a total of 1,580,882.31 Reichsmark. Reconstruction began on March 14, 1946 and the reconstructed bridge was officially reopened on July 26, 1947.

I studied in Heidelberg about 30 years ago. Unfortunately, it's no longer what it used to be. It's very crowded with tourists, even if it was 30 years ago. But when I was there again, it just wasn't as nice as it used to be. But what we also enjoyed doing was the Philosophenweg on the other side of Heidelberg. It's a beautiful path to walk and you have a great view of Heidelberg!
I’m sure that’s the case with many beautiful places, we still found so much charm in Heidelberg and loved our moments there - but we had never been before, so nothing to compare it to!

Dear Adriana and Dylan, I was watching and you had the message from your mother and she spoke absolutely perfect German, I thought she was Swedish?? Adriana, you also have excellent German pronunciation even though you always ask if you say it right, you always do. You remind me a little of one of my sisters.
By the way, that baked goods smell in Germany is typical. Once as a child I was visiting my relatives in an old 17th century village, and, in the morning, my parents sent me across the road to the local bakery to get some Broetchen; they which had the most amazing bread and all nice stuff. Hundreds of types of bread in Germany, the best I've ever eaten anywhere and also amazing pastry. I must admit that I really miss the superb quality of bread in Germany that I cannot find in the UK.

Now knowing you´re swedish makes it even more impressive how smoothly you´re switching between a learned british accent and perfect german pronounciation. I know, because my pronounciations of foreign words are very slick as well, but I can only do it because I practicing singing for more than a decade, just for fun and keep my astma in check. For people with astma actually training the lounges by sports, singing or blow instrument is way better than anything you get a prescription for regarding astma. Thanks to sports and singing only time I needed my spray again in the past 18 years when I had got the coronavirus at the very beginning. Without that emergency spray I would have entered ECU due to lag of oxygen, that´s why I keep singing and that made me realize how to propperly pronounce other languages like japanese: you have to figure out in which part of the throat moast people are forming the sound for their language. English tourist always ask me "where´re you from?" because I sound like a native tounge, but I just push air differently through my lounges when speaking english than I do in german, same goes for other languages. Guess using my lounges differently speaking other languages makes it easier to not slip up in pronounciation, that would explain why your "of" in the other video sounded so german. Afterall, swedish and german have the same linguistic roots and are both based on the same language, that´s why people in nothern Germany who speak "frisisch Platt" nativly understand quite some english, dutch and all scandinavian languages partically.

8:47 Thats because they want to educate/train people to not use the car so often, if possible. Best when you are in Heidelberg, just park somewhere a bit outside, doesnt even cost something mostly and then just get a day ticket for public transport and then just use this for the whole day. This saves you a lot of money, it is less pollution and also the outer areas of th historic centre is not so full of cars.
17:50 Not my favorite.. It is just like if you do proper cookies then take the rest after you punched them out, and then just pressed the rest of it to a ball and baked it. And I think thats how this whole thing started and proably was very very cheap back then because it was just some sugar powered cookie remains. Not what I would define a speciality, what you proudly present to foreign visitors, to be honest. And sell it for this absurd price. But everyone has its own taste of course.

Also, where I live now Bucks county pa is heavy red sandstone and shale. Leiman was a small town by my mother's town of Waldorf by Heidleberg.
The Heidleberg cement company (HCC) operated out of this town. Now HCC operates all the stone quarries in bucks co.

@@helfgott1 that would be incorrect. If you went to gotherburg in Sweden, you could likely call it Gothenburg, because that’s what it’s called in English. In Swedish it’s Göteborg. Many cities have different names in different languages. You could call New York ‘Efrog Newydd’ if you were speaking Welsh, for example.
