- Would you stay in this Soviet Sanatorium on the shores of Lake Issyk-Kul, Kyrgyzstan? ☭
So, as we headed from Bishkek up to Cholpon-Ata (a resort town on the north side of the world's second largest 'high altitude' lake), we stumbled upon the Sanatorium 'Goluboy Issyk-Kul' we just couldn't resist checking a living relic of times gone by. Soviet sanatorium's were state-run institutions that provided workers with constructive rest. Halfway between a spa and a clinic, they offered unconventional health and wellbeing treatments. They are still incredibly popular all over the countries of the former USSR including here in Kyrgyzstan 🇰🇬

Thanks for the inspiration, we left Almaty in Kazakhstan last week to come to Kyrgyzstan and visit Chopon ata / issyk kul. We’re watching this in a different soviet sanatorium in Cholpon ata called State residence number two, it cost 4000 som for a night but it’s beautiful. Issyk kul is a beautiful place to visit !

You should see that "hotel" we was staying in Rostock Germany, I think that was last year of DDR, no visa needed then, the hotel was a former sea mens hotel if I remeber right, it was built in a typical SSSR-style then you could guess how the rooms look.

My goodness you guys are true adventurers. I mean that place looks like what my definition of a sanitorium is- a place for the mentally disturbed/imbalanced. I mean if i had no choice sure. But the food looked decent and the lake is beautiful. You guys thrilled me with this video...real troopers. 😂

When I traveled at your age, I would have had the same responses you had. Now, as a 63 year old grandma, I would rather stay home in California and live vicariously through your travels! I have no tolerance for dirt, germs, vomit in a bus, etc., but I love watching how you two relate to your experiences and each other. Have fun and thanks for posting!
Hope your in a clean part of California. I moved out 3 years ago. I couldn't stand the filth and Overall decline in quality of living. Hope it changes. But sadly doubt it

You can see its run down now but in its day, it would've been spectacular - it still worth staying there, I'd stay a week without hesitation and have a crack at all the 'treatments' too. Considering that was unplanned accommodation, it was a real gem, anybody can stay at a Holiday Inn, but an old soviet Sanatorium, how many, in the west, can say that. What memories you're creating - enjoy! 👍👍
For sure, it must have been really quite incredible! The surrounding scenery still is! To be honest if we had the time we would have definitely stay for the treatments! What an experience that would have been! 😊

I literally smiled and laughed through the whole of your video. Thank you. I’ve visited loads. But then I find Pontins hilarious. ( I might add I’m just as happy in the Hilton (Just) ). I’ve visited ones with mud, water, salt baths. The last one , recently, I had the best massage I’ve ever had with eucalyptus. The man said don’t visit the swimming pool on Tuesday Wednesday Thursday Friday Saturday Sunday. We asked why he said the old ladies piss in the pool and by Sunday the water is drained and cleaned. My dearly beloved, Ukrainian, hates them. “In the day” to quote you, husbands and wives normally visited separate sanatorium, depending on what the factory doctor recommended and they were really just a “ carry on” knocking shop.

I *so* want to visit a sanatorium! There are loads of them around Ukraine (well, relatively) but my boyfriend isn't interested in going with me and they seem like places that are more fun with a buddy. Nice to have a look into one!

Interesting stay... I can't help to wonder how the "non-upgraded" room would have been? 🙄 The balcony disco definitely surpassed the disco in the square (quality wise) 👍🏻😉😁 Probably the effects of the "treatments" that affected those disco participants? 😳😂

Some of the moves on the square dance floor were pretty awesome! There was definitely a real commitment from some of them! We actually met the best dancer the following morning, and that was an adventure in itself 😂that’s it’ll the next video though 😀

3 months ago i was in Issyk-Kul. It's really a wonderful place i have ever seen. I miss krgyzstan. I am lucky that i was in Issyk-Kul for long 15 days.
Food was not upto class.
Really? The food looks great on camera, particularly in their video from Karakol. I thought I would get immensely fat if I stayed there for a while! but I guess like everywhere, there is a lot of good and a lot of not so good restaurants...

Most people today still dream to have such a bathroom in their dwelling, so you know... check your privileges, and so on.
Although I thought sanitarium as well and wondered why anybody would want to go there, I looked up sanatorium under Google in the states and it said people with severe illnesses like tuberculosis to get the best help and medical care that they could so it's still confusing me LOL
I stayed in similar resorts in Crimea, they were nicer though. But also old Soviet.

Guys, we have a lots of good hotels in Kyrgyzstan, especially in Issyk-Kul, you just picked one of the worst and this price is very cheap for Issyk-Kul. If you come again to this beautiful lake I would definitely recommend you to stay in “Raduga” hotel or “Karven Issyk-kul”. You will see the difference and the prices are not too high. The hotel on the video is sponsored by our government, as you might know our budget is empty because of corruption. So, sorry for that experience.
I am watching this from Australia and it honestly does not look too bad. I would happily have stayed there. Yes, it is basic but looks clean and totally ok. The area is beautiful. But thanks for the tip, if I ever go, which I hope, I will look up the ones you recommended.
in 1976, for school, I did a review on the vacation options for folks in soviet russia. I was lucky to have a visitor who had been there and it very well may have been this site he referred to, so much fits! He said it was very regimented, broken out into different levels based upon your standing in society ( I thought it was a classless society and all were equal, no). While there are many "vacation spots" as a citizen you were only give a very few options of where you could go, and what activities "treatments" were offered. The folks didn't pay for it, the work place provided it. The crowds back then were enormous as only these sites were allowed for vacation. I live in USA and propaganda is real. I'm not sure if I was being provided truth or if the rigidness was over emphasised. Watching this video I think it probably was a real issue. Nice but very controlling and ..... basic, like the food. Interesting.

It is a very complicated and complex subject but in Lehman’s terms no. Stalin statues were removed during the ‘de-stalinization’ process under Khrushchev in the late 50’s. This was when the crimes Stalin had committed against his own people and others were really unearthed. But Lenin, despite his wrongdoings, was still (alongside Marx) thought of as a pioneer of communism and the main driver in the creation of the USSR. Lenin statues nowadays are only still present in a few ex Soviet nations.

1000 сом и не могли сделать нормальный поддон для душа?(это 1080 рублей. За ночь. пздц, да в России есть гостиничный номер, с покрывалом прожженным, но это точно редкость, тут курортный санаторий блять, в 1993 году, в Ессентуках был, там санатории такого точно не было..)
Покрывало прожженное? Треснутое стекло, заклеено скотчем, СЕРЬЕЗНО...

I have travelled myself to Kyrgyzstan and have found people rigid and rude, 1st I thought they bahave such only with Asians but after checking many tourist videos, they are not nice people
