UPDATE: Since making this video, we have needed to fix this mower twice due to the controller driver failing (electrical faults). The retailer has promptly fixed all work under warranty, but you should know this if you are considering buying one based on my review. We still use this mower all the time but mainly for towing/carting things around the property, however, mowing/cutting it is only used as a backup or to mow areas where my larger rideons can't fit. Honestly, would I buy another electric Toro? Probably not. || G'day, Everyone, I just wanted to give another local small business shout-out to Sunshine Coast Mowers. They are now my go-to for all my mower and Hanza chipper services, etc. Also, thank you for your continued support and remember to visit my website selfsufficientme.com/ Get into it! Cheers, Mark :)

With every new mower we would spray Pam cooking spray on the deck to keep the grass from sticking. Seem to help keep grass from clumping/sticking under the deck

Have you looked at the Ryobi electric riding mower? I just ordered on from Home Depot in America. I am curious what it costs in Australia. Mine cost $2400 American for the 50 Ah version. The $4200 Australian sounded kind of expensive.
Never mind. I just watched the video again and see the mower I got costs $4000 Australian where you are.

my first experience with an electric mower was back in 71 after I purchased my first house. Oh yes I did have to purchase a 100 foot cord as it had no battery. I was in a Walgreen drugstore and saw the Black and Decker mower at a $49 cost. I sharpened the blade a couple times a year and it till 1985 when it burned up, melting the cover to the motor. I cried all day as I lost my trusty mower. I would buy another except for the fact that the lawn is now mowed for everyone. No stinking gasoline sitting around is a blessing.

We had the same B&D corded mower in the early 70's.. ours was orange so we bought it an orange 100' 12ga cord as well.. still have that cord today. Can't recall what came of the mower.

I used a similar one in Darwin back in 93 when I was living with my Uncle (whilst serving up there in the Army). He had a decent sized townhouse with a medium backyard and I enjoyed using the electric mower but you did have to be careful not to run over the cord! One day, I mowed under a tree and a green ant nest dropped on the back of my neck - I think I nearly pulled the mower out of the wall socket as I ran around slapping myself stupid trying to get rid of them. Cheers :)

Mark, my sweet hubby brought home for me (Im the lawn maintenance boss lol) a Ryobi 48V Brushless 38 in. 100 Ah Battery Electric Rear Engine Riding Lawn Mower in 2019. I LOVE IT! 2 hour run time, or 2 acre. Charges quickly, came with baggers, but we just set it to mulch. I have a small place so I can mow front, back and sides in about 30 minutes. He brought it home and said, “Happy birthday, Merry Christmas, happy anniversary, and happy valentines!” No kidding these are pricey but SO worth it. Now when my push mower dies, all electric for me baby. Having solar power now, charging will be nearly free compared to using fuel. I might add, that on my Ryobi, my emergency break controller is on the foot board next to the regular break, which is super handy! And it has a constant reverse override which is neat if you have to do a lot of backing up. The headlights are huge and legit bright!

Good morning Lelleith! I know the feeling of "shaky hands or numbness pins and needles" from using a push mower - it's certainly annoying. And, to an extent, you still get vibrations from the petrol engine running when sitting on a mower (plus the noise) so it is one of the main reasons why battery power tends to be more fun to use. If only, they could make them as powerful and long-running as petrol but we'll see what happens in the future I guess... Cheers :)

Not tried a battery ride-on mower but after owning a grass trimmer, push mower, and a blower that are battery operated I will NEVER go back to a gas engine. Easy to use, light, no irritating gas/oil/spark plugs to deal with, no frustration trying to get it started, etc. etc. Depending on one's needs I definitely recommend having a backup battery if your work will be longer than the battery charge. Beyond that it is a quiet, pleasant experience and I actually enjoy yardwork again, haha.

At my old house I had a 1 acre field which needed a petrol ride on to keep on top of it, but when we downsized, I decided to invest in a small battery lawnmower. It was a twin pack, so two 24v batteries and a battery strimmer. So long as the grass isn't too long I can cut all the lawns on one battery. But what I also do is I have a portable solar panel from the caravan, so use that to charge a car battery, then through an inverter, charges the mowers batteries. Basically free mowing.
Admittedly the biggest gripe I have with the lawnmower is that the cutting width is not great so does take a while to cut, but Marks one with a 30" width would be small when compared to petrol ones, so you have to accept some compromises when using battery based tools.

Had many Honda mowers and they last forever, but times change as there are issues with oil, gas, filters, plugs, etc. Not so with EV's and as an author with now seven food books worldwide my wife of 54+ years traveled the world. We spent a month in all the Baltic States and into Russia, (not going there again after what they did to Ukraine), then down Marks way a month pre-covid, just coming out then and thousands of Chinese tourist in Australia and New Zealand, scary times and mask wearing times too! I have lawn care for about nine months a year on our Alabama Appalachian mountain, sub-tropical much like parts of Australia. We have Bermuda grass, soft plush like carpet and own over 1,300 feet down the mountain and that is rocky and cut via trimmers, but the front is smaller at a little over 7,500 square feet perfect for most EV mowers. Mark's place has some very high grass, some looked like well over a foot to 18 inches and even our Honda gas would have choked at times with those issues. It seems the Toro did well on most things, fast, small, only issue may be lead acid compared to Lithium, which are lighter and preferred by most lawn mower companies. Both have their good things and bad things. Much to consider. I only want this type of mower for the flat front area mentioned and it and Ryobi, Hart, Cub Cadet, Troy Built, John Deer, Makita, and very popular EGO and Green Works too! As Alabama gets a lot of rain from the Gulf stream, (being on the Gulf of Mexico), and we are 85% tree cover, we get a hell of a lot of leaves and this is what I will use the next purchase for as my lawn care service is not active for those nasty billions of leaves January-March, and bagging as opposed to racking will be a nice change. We now have several friends in Australia and while 90% of Australians live only on the small strip of land around the huge island/continent in the Oceania part of the world, we also have one couple living in the most dry dessert Outback, so-to-speak! Wonderful people and we always love seeing them. P.S. I just found out in my research in America you can't deduct lawn care off your taxes, but buying a self-propelled and/or driving lawn mower is considered a "capital purchase" and you can deduct it off your taxes. So, if you need a tax deduction in America, a $3,000 to $7,000 tax break sounds like a winner as you have fun driving like Mark and his wife with a smile on your face. Not sure about tax laws down under, but worth Googling it, as Mark may need a tax break too!

If you contact the right people you could get a whole shed of machinery considering Ben from lawn tips just got a huge amount of John deer kit to tidy up his $2mil acreage with around only 100k subs.

Hey Mark. I put a ceramic coating on the deck of my mower which protects it but also helps a lot with grass not sticking to it.

The one downside I remember, is if the Battery went completely dead on me? The Brakes would Lock on the Wheels! And me and others, would have to push it back to its Charging Point?
I can tell you this? THAT was NO fun at all Mate! I just hope that sort of thing doesn’t happen to your little Red Runner-bout?

Sorry I haven't seen, liked or commented on your vids lately, been in transit. (Relocated from Victoria to Queensland. 15 mins south of your loc now, in Burpengary)
I did something similar last week. Bought an Ozito 'rechargeable' lawn mower. Seriously, if it had yellow wheels, my 2 year old grand-son would have it as a toy, but, it does the job.
Keep up the good work bro.

I'm glad to see this application of battery and electric motor technology applied to maintaining our gardens. Thanks for your honest review.
I'm now just waiting for someone to come out with a decent electric wood chipper. I've tried two and they don't even come close to the gas-powered ones. Wish we could get the Bosch one that they have in Europe and AUS - not available in N. America AFAIK.

    • @Selfsufficientme
      @Selfsufficientme  3 роки тому +2

Yeah, I'd imagine that chipping wood (a decent size) would be extremely energy-consuming. I had a small garden shredder that worked ok-ish but it doesn't come close to our Hanza petrol chipper which is a reliable beast of a unit. Cheers :)

Thanks for the review. I've a push mower and about 700sqm of lawn but it hurts my back too do in one hit and often takes 3 or 4 goes. It's also very long as I use the grass for guinea pig food. The reviews I've seen so far usually aren't going through the tall stuff like you guys did.

I’ve gone to Ryobi 40v outdoor tools for around the place. I don’t have much to mow, so no mower. But I do use the leaf blower, string trimmer, and various attachments for the trimmer powerhead (pole saw, tiller, etc.) I just bought their 40v post hole auger for my big fencing project.
I still have a Husqvarna Rancher, but my next chainsaw will be electric. IF I ever buy a new mower, it will be too.
I use 20v dewalt for everything inside the home & shop, and 40v Ryobi for everything outside.

lmao , i was a welder for Greenfield mowers back in 2010 and i made a suggestion to the management to build an electric ride-on mower .
I was laughed at n told it would never happen, it could have saved the company from going bust.

We bought the gas one of the same size runs great but the 2 biggest issues are the steering and no traction control. The steering is cheap crap because at the bottom of the shaft is a gear and toothed flat bar connected to the wheels that are loose and don't always mesh up tight it slips and pops off or gets stuck during turns and the mower will still go strait all because once it looses traction on one wheel it eather stops moving (back wheels) or shoots you off into the bushes (front wheels). I've found that these smaller width mowers are a complette waist of money and very dangerous even on the smallest of hills and stop constantly on uneven ground you might as well be mowing a nice flat parking lot. 👈🤓👍
