Growing up in Northern California I learned about huge flocks of these magnificent birds that would spend their winter in our delta region. I coukd go on and on of the wonderful images I have witnessed. The more I learned I came to understand the signicance of Nebraska and these birds.
So we traveled there but because of my in-laws hesitance we missed the season. But we enjoyed our visit to Nebraska nevertheless!

Beautiful Video!! My name is Daniel Mahoney and I’m a UNL student working on a podcast called “93 Counties” for 90.3 KRNU and the Nebraska News Service. The podcast aims to share the stories of Nebraskans from across the state. I am working on an episode about Kearney County, and it is specifically about Sandhill Cranes. I was wondering if I can use clips from this video for NAT sound and news clips to use for my podcast. I would really appreciate it and great video!

Hi Daniel! I'm sorry for not getting back to you sooner. Sounds like a great podcast, feel free to use some clips from the video :) we will have to check out your podcast. Let us know if you have any questions about cranes or anything else in our area.

Typically we have large numbers all of March and into April. Guided tours run from March 9-April 6, 2024 but there is several public viewing locations as well. Hope that helps!

Florida Sandhills cranes are non-migratory. Pairs settle near a body of water and stroll hither and yon in search of insects or some other yummy. 😊😊😊

Unfortunately, they are hunted here in Texas. Every November I go on a solo trip due west on the Prairie Dog Town Fork of the Red River just to see these beautiful birds as they settle in to feed and drink before commencing further on their travels. I can typically make it about 7 or 8 miles upriver to set up camp for a few days. Pure solitude; very seldom do I see another person during the 3-5 days there. No gunshots, no ATVs, no drunken campfire socials. Just me and God, the nighttime coyote song, the morning mule and evening whitetail deer, and the cranes. There’s nothing else like it. Pure Southern Great Plains slowly transitioning into the notorious Llano Estacado. It’s a special thing, hearing these magnificent birds as they fly overhead or land near you.. if you’re lucky enough. Sedge after sedge for about two weeks straight in mid-November.
