I’ve been watching your channel for a few days now and it is very well done. Thanks for the great content Max, I just finished carving my first spoon yesterday and gave it to my oldest daughter as a gift.
Yes, for a while, but my crew is trying to get back into forging as we speak. We've done several drops of axes in the past weeks. Please head to my website Woodsmansfinest.com to stay updated! Thank you!
Just placed my order for the Universal Craft Axe. Your video helped make the sale! Plus, I tend to be drawn to more "petite" tools and this one should fit the bill! My first high end axe by the way. I look forward to seeing my first spoon emerge. Thanks much, Jerry!
Hope you enjoyed making this video as much as I did watching it ; ) Axecelent content like this is always great for an axejunky like me. Dankeschön Max und alles gute aus dem Rheinland, Maximilian.
Means a lot Justin! The way this works is that comment and likes are important to be recognized and spread by this platform, so it helps me, the chanel and my lifestyle to hear that!
from your review looks like this axe carves really well and coming from an engineering background i can appreciate the fact that very hard ball bearing steel was used to forge it.aesthetically the shape is very nice traditional looking.
All the axes I sell are made from 52100. I've forged it myself in the past and have experience with all common steels for carving tools and axes and, for me, nothing has ever surpassed it. Cheers
Thanks for the video. I've been interested in the universal carving axe for some time. I hope to own one in the near future. Although i like the way that you are able to index on the cheek of your Wayfarer axe. It looks like it gives you a great deal of control shaving and carving. Trying to get an idea of what will suit me best functionally from your videos. If I'm being honest I'd like to own many of the axes you have reviewed. Lol i guess I'm an axe hog too!
Thank for the comment. You are bringing up a very important thought of course. There is a little difference here in how the axes feel and perform. It often comes down to what you can visualise better in your hands. Thank you for the support! Cheers
The bevels are dead flat and very easy to keep that way on a nice diamond and bench stone. The 52100 is a tough steel but sharpens reasonably well! Love the steel the most of all.
Very nice meow, do you think or know, if they temper carving specific axes differently than a standard axe? I have had the Gransfors small forest for a long time and although I have not carved with it, I know that it could be done. A shorter handle would obviously be preferable. I wouldn’t change a thing on it, but it is the best axe I have ever personally used for an extended period of time doing general clearing and fun camping stuff. Making shelters and what not. Are you saying the axe in this video holds an edge longer than the GB ? Cause that alone is super impressive.
Man... I agree... The small forest axe, which I have a video out about too, and worked today with for about 4h, is a lovely axe. Took it deep into the Ontario northern Bush in canoes and packs. But, you can't compare the steel. The GB and other felling, limbing axes for that matter have a convex grind. Might look shallow but definitely at least 35 to 40 degrees at the edge. I've used most carving axes on the market, forged my one from different steels and refurbished vintage axes a bunch. There is always pros and cons to all combos and choices. However, Swedish still is a medium to low carbon steel and little softer and easy to sharpen. Great in the bush. This baby is from 52100 ball bearing steel like my own axe line. It is a tough, hard, high carbon steel that can take a flat 30 degree bevel. You can't compare it to a Swedish pattern or woodland axe in general. The glancing I experienced again while carving wooden wedges to split some big logs, using the GB small FA were so obnoxious. You can of course use it for all that. No doubt but this here is a completely different animals. Of course it wouldn't do what the GB axe does as well. Different task, different design. Cheers
Woodsmans Finest oh ok, so a carving axe has a more acutely ground edge. And better edge retention at the finer ground edges. I have not seen a true purpose built carving axe in person, which is why I was asking. I have however put the GB SFA through a lot and been very pleased with its abilities. Yes I touch it up when I return, but it’s far from bad or truly needing it. I just prefer it to shave when I take it out, it it stays that way for a while. I’ll have to look into a purpose built carver at some point and see for myself the difference. Thank you.
I realize this is a carving axe but if a person was taking this hiking and bushcrafting would it work as a tool too? Realize the mentioned wildlife hatchet is probably better suited. Just looking for feedback. Thanks
The realm of axes and designs for different purposes is huge. There is a good reason there are so many design features different for actual Bush use. I am in Canada right now, canoeing the wilderness, and the axes I bring for actual bushcraft are restored old axes optimized for such use. I've been meaning to design an axe based on those experiences but for now, the small forest axe by gransfors bruks is probably the best regularly available one out there

@@woodsmansfinest3814 they are stunning! Your legs are nice too... but the shorts are striking! BTW the Enzo folding knife as well as the bison leather sloyd bib you sent me continue to be outstanding
I am considering buying this axe in a second-hand market, but the short handle length is my concern. However, I was thinking perhaps the weight counterbalance the short handle for strikes aiming to remove material. What do you think about the short handle, would it be better with let say 30-33 cm?
Find out what you like. I can't tell you. I liked it. I have no idea of your size, experience, carving style etc. Get it, if you don't like it, make a new handle. I have videos about that

This isn't meant to be lowest possible barrier of entry. Marbles is Chinese BTW and condor is also cheap labour made to keep the prices down. Save money, be patient. Great spoon axe Max, and a good weight. We don't need heavy axes for spoon carving. Short fat haft....perfect. Someone else mentioned the sound. Voice is 100% left side and occasional music other side...
I'll check the Sound... It all came through my laptop and ear phones stereo. Voice and music. Spoons are not the be all end all so I present axes heavier than that too... Also...
