I sat up and played all night with the Rev. after a concert, I was a concert promoter for the Seattle Folklore Society and got to meet all the great bluesmen, for which I feel eternally blessed. If you like the Rev. there's all kinds of stuff on youtube. He was a moving and powerful performer, just as down to earth as an old shoe.

I was fortunate to get a 2nd-row seat, and even more fortunate to eavesdrop on the Reverend, taking his break directly in front of me with his wife, being softly but intensely lectured about his indoor cigar smoking---possibly not for the first time =:^)---and his short, gruff replies. It was nice to get a glimpse of everyday life from someone I regarded as a musical icon and still do.

When I decided to learn guitar 30 years ago, a Stefan Grosman tab book by the Reverend Gary Davis was all they had in the library by way of tuition. In an interview Stefan asked him why he only played with his thumb and forefinger and not his other fingers and Davis said something along the lines of, that's all you need, the others get in the way. I thought that sounded pretty logical and 30 years on I still agree with him. I can't recall anyone else just using the thumb and forefinger only, so basically that interview shaped the whole of my playing during that time. Great to see him in this, one of his best. :)
