Lankum - What Will We Do When We Have No Money? (Official Audio)

  • Опубліковано 13 сер 2024
  • Taken from the album 'Between the Earth and Sky', out now on Rough Trade Records: rtrecs.co/BTEAS
Lankum say: "We first heard this song from the great Dublin singer Barry Gleeson, who included it on his debut CD, Path across the Ocean (TERR CD001). Although many people have recorded it, all sources lead back to one Mary Delaney. Mary was an Irish Traveller
recorded in London in 1973 by collectors Jim Carroll and Pat Mackenzie, who speculated that it was a remake of the song ‘What Would You Do If You Married a Soldier’ to which it bears more than a passing resemblance. Mary can be heard singing this song, along with many others on the double CD From Puck to Appleby
    (MTCD325-6)"

This tune is an absolute work of genius, from the moment the Uileaan Pipes gasp into life.
Lankum. She sings like she was part of the pipes and how her phrasing echoes them.. and for four or five verses you wait for the harmony voices of the Pipes to resolve that chordal change your very blood knows is on its way.
I was listening to this in the car yesterday on a longish drive and when that chord change finally came I punched the air like a soccer hooligan!

This track never fails to give me goosebumps. The drone is mesmerizing and the lead vocals are spot on. I love how the harmonic vocals at 2:39 and the minor drone changes at 3:19 lift the track to an entirely new level. Fucking masterpiece.

This instantly gripped me, and left me waiting to see my brothers of the past.I forget sometimes where I come from, and also question whether those old traditions are relevant in this modern age. This was one of those things that reminds me that yes, some old traditions are beneficial for the future.

Outstanding rendition of a song drenched in tradition. Drones and vocals woven brilliantly. Can't wait to play the new record.

This song is nothing less than totally stunning, it is haunting, it is beautiful, it is deeply sad, The vocals me a little of the very great Margaret Barry, It song could come from severay different counties, you could imagine a native Indin black hills of Decota USA, from the plains of outer Mongolia, by nomadic people in eastern Europe, by aborigines in the outback of Australia, parts of China and India to name but just a few.

What will we do when we have no money?
Oh true lovers what will we do then?
Only hawk through the town for a hungry crown,
And we'll yodel it over again.
And what will we do if we marry a sailor?
Oh true lovers what will we do then?
Only sail on his ships and we'll play on his lips,
And we'll yodel it over again.
And what will we do if we marry a soldier?
Oh true lovers what will we do then?
Only handle his gun and we'll fight for the fun,
And we'll yodel it over again.
And what will we do if we marry a tinker?
Oh true lovers what will we do then?
Only mend a tin can and walk on with me man,
And we'll yodel it over again.
And what will we do if we have a young daughter?
Oh true lovers what will we do then?
Only throw her on our back and walk on for the craic,
And we'll yodel it over again.
So what will we do when we have no money?
Oh true lovers what will we do then?
Only hawk through the town for a hungry crown,
And we'll yodel it over again.

What the fuck is wrong with this comment section? Usually a modern take on traditional music is tasteless and crappy, but this band is far from it. It might not be your kind of thing, but cmon it really ain't shit. Those harmonies, those deep rumbling, breathy sounds of the accordion. It's as if the earth is rumbling, and the birds are singing. Not to mention what the lyrics mean to me, what hearing this music no longer be buried means to me, and surely to many others.
