Excellent acting. It makes you realise that, despite the grainy images and the minimal sets, the TV was offering much better quality than a lot of what passes for 'entertainment' in 2024.
I adore the film version, but enjoyed this tv version very much. Patricia Routledge is a standout, and Michael Caine is also wonderful. I’ve never seen either actor so young before. Great acting all around. Thanks for putting this gem on UA-cam for us.
I thought Brenda De Banzie and John Mills were the definitive pair. But I love this version and young Michael Caine is so dreamy, but also excellent in the part. I’m a vonvert

How wonderful that both Michael Caine and Patricia Routledge are still with us! He a Knight and she a Dame! Bet they didn’t foresee that when they shot this.
I was uncertain about how much I was going to enjoy this, as I'm a devotee of the 1954 film version, but I've LOVED Patricia Routledge in every production I've seen her in and this was no exception. This vintage t.v. version of Hobson's Choice was Simply Smashing and every actor in it Wonderful! 👏👏
Had no idea this version existed. I remember all three actresses. Christine Hargreaves was in Coronation Street and June Barry was a regular in all sorts of dramas. Being set in my home town, Hobson's Choice is desr to my heart!
A deliightful movie. Intelligent characterisation and dialogue. Michael Caine and Patricia Rutledge are great fro a very good reason. So young here! Loved it, thank you!!!
Thank you for posting this. My husband and I loved Patricia Routledge as Hyacinth Bucket for years, and it is a great pleasure to see her in this play at a much younger age. Both she and Michael Caine were perfectly cast, and the whole thing was a revelation! And they looked wonderful, both of them!
I love Patricia Routledge too. Have you ever seen her in Talking Heads? I could listen to her for hours. I think she and Maggie Smith have been the most talented women in films and TV.
@jennyrussellobrien1582 If you liked this, you'll like another even more. The 1954 version, directed by David Lean is SO good. One of my all-time favourites. Starring Charles Laughton as Henry Hobson, Brenda De Banzie as Maggie and John mills as Will Mossop. Also features a very young Prunella Scales as Alice! ua-cam.com/video/QlaAllCMjzE/v-deo.html Sir Michael's accent ..well it was a brave stab.. but just didn't work, in my view. But really great to see Pat Routledge in her younger days.
Delightful. Routledge is unrecognizable until Patricia turns and fusses at 3:39 and Hyacinth flickers across her face. And Michael Caine, so young, so thin, so fully into his role. Thank you, Classic Telly.
Thank you! Knocks the very spots off the garbage we are fed today. Patricia is absolutely stellar in this! Micheal is great but I think miscast, he’s too good looking and tall for Will…..but acted it brilliantly nonetheless !. Both are fine actors and two of my favourites. I think it lost some of the comical whimsy of the film but it stands on its own as a great piece of drama. I did not know this had been produced. It’s windy and rainy out and this has been a very pleasurable diversion. Again, thank you.😊
@ Yes it was and as I said, he was brilliant. It’s all opinion and I still have the image of Sir John Mills and felt it was a better match. Physically for me it just didn’t quite fit, no matter how well he played the part.
Thank you very much to whoever placed this video on UA-cam. It is lovely to see a very young Patricia Routledge and Michael Caine. I have never seen them this young before. I loved the film with John Mills and Brenda DeBansie. But this version is good. Thanks again.
Great movie , thank u for posting . Saw it MANY years ago and left a lasting impression especially the acting from Patricia Routledge and Michael Caine . Superb . Patricia certainly carried that persona well thru her acting career . Thank you .
That was enjoyable. Nearly didn't watch because of fuzzy image. Amazing to think that both Patricia Routledge and Michael Caine are still alive at 95 and 91 respectively.
I love the Charles Laughton, John Mills, Brenda De Banzie version and have watched it many times but this little gem (that I was not aware of) is absolutely superb.
Everyone on this comments page has mentioned Routledge and Caine(rightly so)but no mention of John Barrie who played Henry Hobson so humanely. A difficult character to play being so selfish and opinionated to make relatable at least and likeable at best. But that very last scene was so very touching thanks in no small measure to John Barrie's performance throughout. You really got to see the real vulnerability of Henry Hobson underneath all the bluster and boast. Thanks for uploading.❤❤
@@mpdferguson No, I think rakellotta meant that Michael Caine's strong Cockney accent was detectable under him trying to talk with a Lancastrian accent.I noticed it too.
For me too I didn’t think he would carry this off, it’s so counter to the usual parts he had played. But he does and more. And though his northern accent drops every now and then, I’m amazed how good it is.
@@clareshaughnessy2745 I would never dispute him being a great actor, but have to agree! in other roles found him to be take or leave. In later years I have found him more appealing, especially in the role of Garth McCann in Second Hand Lions 2003.

This was superb! From the golden age of television, when they had basic technology and oodles of talent. Today they have oodles of technology and no talent, and it shows. Thank you so much for this glorious find.
Thank you for sharing this amazing production of this classic story. I love John Mills and Brenda de Banzie in the Will and Maggie roles but PR and MC gave such amazing performances I enjoyed every minute.
I only knew the wonderful film before stumbling across this. I'm amazed how good it is and stands up well, nice acting, a perfect little-boy-lost Michael Caine included, plus good crisp dialogue, and that wondeful little turn by John Laurie's lovely irascible but integrity-driven 'Scotch' doctor. Thanks.
Wonderful production and played beautifully by those at the start of their careers , and some of course In the twilight of their acting days . And as history has proven the leads have gone on to the very top of the profession , thanks again to the gentleman who kindly puts these gems together n
Thanks for uploading this video. I’m a fan of the film and this was just as enjoyable. Also with the added pleasure of watching Michael Caine and Patricia Routledge in their early careers.
What a joy! A strong cast in a tale for all times. I know Salford and worked in St Anne’s Square a century ago so I feel right at home. How many advert breaks were we subjected to in that era, 2?
