Lee Ritenour is an American guitarist whose career has spanned across genres. He has been a prominent figure in music since the late 1960s, after being inspired by legends such as Wes Montgomery as a young musician. Ritenour studied classical guitar at the University of Southern California. Throughout his extensive career, Ritenour has collaborated with Barbra Streisand, Pink Floyd, Carole King, B.B. King, Bette Midler, and so many more. His work garnered him 16 Grammy nominations, and one win!
For Lee, there aren't many 'firsts' left to achieve. During his dazzling five-decade career, this LA born guitarist has taken his music through every genre... from rock, jazz, pop and pretty much
everything in between. Ritenour's accolades include: 45 albums, 16 Grammy nominations, Alumnus of the year at USC, Los Angeles' Jazz Society Honoree (2019), plus thousands of sessions with legends such as Frank Sinatra, Pink Floyd, B.B. King, Steely Dan, Fourplay, and Tony Bennett, among others. Lee's newest album is called "Dreamcatcher."

Awesome interview! Lee is my all time favorite Jazz artist. His stretch of work from the mid 80’s to mid 90’s is unparalleled in the genre. And the joy he plays with live is second to none. Just a remarkable talent.

it is great hearing all these stories and learn some more about the great Lee Ritenour, he is the real deal being able to play different genres with such proficiency while being tasteful
I'm primarily a rock player who always knew of Lee but never knew much at all about his career. I've been getting into him lately, that's why I'm here. What a monster musician and player. I've got a lot of catching up to do.
I don't have the time to listen to an hour or longer interview, but the thrust of any such Q and A with an artist that most folks, music lovers, rock/funk lovers, guitar players really don't know much about, if they have ever even heard a recording of......is all about what notable recordings he played on that the folks can relate to. For instance, we did not realize that Lee played the scale oriented solo in The Brothers Johnson Strawberry Letter Motown/Funk hit from the 70's; nor do most folk know that Lee played on one or two Steely Dan tracks and albums. Which ones were they? Many of us know Lee from the great jazz-rock-fusion era in the 80's where music was breaking out and becoming quite creative in both NYC and LA....what I would refer to as the Dave Grusin era. Many of us saw Lee live back then with his concerts....many of us also knew Lee to be the first guitar player to perform with Four Play....before Carlton and Loeb. He was the guy that made that ensemble happen and click musically from the axe perspective. We'd love to get some more meaningful kind of musicians' questions posed to Lee about his technique, his influences, his musical studies, his likes and dislikes in the musical world, his favorite equipment, pedals, amps, etc. Too much of what you and others put on the Tube is of no consequence or import to us, those who love and appreciate and spend on musical entertainment. We'd like to have some folks who understand the subject matter they interview before wasting valuable air time in cyberspace. At any rate, will stop the bloviation there. Hope to listen to this, one of many, recent interviews that Ritenour is doing all over the Internet, with every Tom, Dick, Harry and industry shill there is.
