    During my EdD journey, I received brutal feedback for the first time after completing four courses. Initially shocked and ashamed, I later found it to be a valuable learning experience. There's always room to grow. Glad to see you're able to embrace the feedback to develop your potential as a scholar-practitioner! :)

      Honestly it was so disheartening but I did reframe my mindset and I see it as a chance to try and again and to learn from the feedback provided! I am learning that it is okay not to always get it right because I am still learning xx

    Girllll, this is what a PHD is all about.. learning and getting feedback from the best. If you were flying through everything easily, there’d be no point in being there. The fact that your peers have so much experience, just means you’ll be learning even more. You got this! ❤

    Being summoned is actually a pretty good sign. If your professor reaches out to you it’s because they know you have it in you to improve.
    Are you using a citation management program like Zotero or Mendely? They can just import your citations to prevent mistakes.
    You've got this, Vee!

      Wanna second this and say- it’s also a good sign that your prof summoned you. It probably means your paper topic is something genuinely interesting to your prof and they want to see the paper executed as ~they would execute it. So they’re being extra hard on it. Keep it up ❤️

    Vee, I am so sorry about your assignment. Your professor was giving you good feedback where you need to improve. You can look for a tutor who has a PhD in Education to try and help you with your assignments. When I did my MA in Classical Studies in the second year, I received negative feedback in my assignments and when I went to get a local tutor in my area and asked for help from my tutor at the OU and the Student Support team, I improved dramatically because I realized that I was describing and narrating instead of arguing and I did end up passing and receiving my Master's degree. Writing essays are extremely difficult, but I am sure that you will do well in the end and you will become Dr. Vee.

    I found Zotero quite a relief in managing my over 1000 references, I did not have to think about the nitty gritties of referencing as once you set it from the beginning on what style of referencing then you just write......Academia can be like that. I failed a paper for not proper referencing my work and then the perspective I adopted did not answer the question as required...... In as much I felt disappointed, I took that as an opportunity to learn but don't get discouraged... it's part of the process somedays it will be great but some days it will be disheartening but you don't stop there you do it again but this time differently.... all the best @VEE

    So, I love your content! You actually were one of my inspirations for getting a PHD in Education.
    I had zero teaching experience before beginning my PHD (albeit, in a traditional classroom - My resume was English private education and professional education). Anyway, did the PHD and now I work for an international recruitment firm in Tokyo.
    Best advice is to not overthink your studies too much. It can be counterintuitive. unnecessary anxiety, retaining pointless information, overanalysing terms, concepts, and frameworks, etc.
    Really take the time to ask yourself if you are putting too much anxiety on yourself? Is the information and books you are reading relevant to your immediate studies? Are you allowing yourself breaks to recentre? Can you collaborate with peers or friends in the industry? What is it exactly that you hope to accomplish in your studies? What avenue of research should you be focusing on?
    Putting the time aside to really plan out your study journey will make a world of difference.
    You can do it - you have such a passion and love for what you are doing. It is very obvious how much you care about this. So, stay strong, recentre, and you can make it. And remember - It's all gravy my friend.
    💕

    A 5.5 means your over half way there. Try not to be too hard on yourself. I am a masters student in the UK and being brave enough to make these videos shows you have incredible courage. Speak to your personal academic tutor and make sure you have support and ask the academic skills staff to read over the papers and see if they agree with the marks given. Celebrate your birthday as this PhD does not define who you are or what you can do. Is she known for giving very harsh marks? . You are intelligent, incredibly funny and passionate about your studies and the topics you write about and not everyone will get that. It's hard. You are an inspiration to so many students right now because you are so genuine and honest so you are already making such a difference to students lives without realising it. We are all cheering you on.
    From a UK student bestie💜

    Something beautiful my pastor told me to get through my first failing grade in university: God is a God of wisdom. He has a complete, perfect plan and you are part of it. So for every failure he already has a plan to repair- for lack of a better word, in place. No-one can come against His plan and will, not even me and I had to learn that the hard way😂 It is set and in place. Therefore my future and succes is in place. It is already with God , it just has to happen here on earth.Stand on his promise of prosperity and a bright future.Have faith in His word. Isaiah 29:11 Everything will be okay.

    Hey Vee, it is actually interesting as a highschool student to see that APA citation is also used in PhD. I use Google docs, in the tool section you will find "citations" and then you can switch to APA or MLA formatting. All you need to do is to keep inserting your links and it generates a reference list for you in whatever formatting you selected. You might need to insert some information yourself if it doesn't automatically add it. But it will let you know beforehand.
    You got this Vee!

    That imposter syndrome is real. I’m almost done with my master’s in school psych and my peers, seniors and juniors all have experience working with kids unlike me. It’s been a difficult two years with courses and practicum with me doubting myself and questioning why I was ever picked to join the program in the first place. Some days I feel good and most days not. I just know that I need to put in the work if I feel I’m not good enough, learn to love myself despite my insecurities and remind myself to stop picking on myself constantly.

    • @drveekativhu
      @drveekativhu  7 місяців тому

      I totally understand where you're coming from. Imposter syndrome can be really tough to deal with, especially when you're surrounded by others who seem more experienced. Just remember, you were chosen for a reason, and your unique perspective and dedication are valuable assets. It's okay to have those moments of doubt - we all do. But trust in yourself and your abilities. You're on this journey for a reason, and you're capable of great things. Hang in there, and remember that you're not alone in feeling this way :) x

    Ah im so sorry youre having a hard time with this module. I got this vid on my recommended so i know very little about your journey. The fact that youre doing a PhD and have been killing it is huge! They wouldnt let you on the course if they didnt think you could do it. Your tutor wouldnt reach out to you to support you through this if they didnt think you could do it. The fact you care so much, that youre nailing your other classes and are so motivated means youre going to be just fine. Youre there to learn, if you got everything right immediately youre not learning anything beyond your current skill. I had a class during my BA that i just couldnt seem to figure out. After talking to my tutor we came to the conclusion that it was an entirely new way of applying knowledge for me. A totally different way of thinking that just didnt come natural to me. Realising that was so helpful, talking it through with my tutor and understanding where my thoughts and hers diverged helped me understand the approach i had to take on. I would pretend to be her whenever i had to write something. Sounds batshit but it worked for me!

Sometimes it takes a different perspective or approach to break through those mental blocks. I'll definitely keep your advice in mind. Thanks for sharing your experience x

    Honestly, I feel it is so much harder to critically evaluate your performance in things you are passionate about because you tend to have so many emotional attachments that it is hard being objective sometimes when it comes to assessing your ideas and writing.
    You get attached to certain ideas and they end up popping up in every piece of your work and it gets hard to justify them.
    Therefore, it is a great opportunity to start questioning everything and learn and re learn!

    • @drveekativhu
      @drveekativhu  7 місяців тому

      You hit the nail on the head! It's definitely a challenge to stay objective when you're passionate about something. Those emotional attachments can make it hard to critically evaluate your own work. It's like those ideas just keep sneaking back in, right? But recognising this is a huge step towards improving. Keep pushing yourself to see things from different angles, and don't be afraid to shake things up. It's all part of the process! xx

    Hey, sorry to hear about your paper, and thanks for sharing the ups and downs of the PhD journey :). In 'The Seven Secrets of highly successful PhD students ' by Hugh Kearns and Maria Gardiner they say that the PhD thesis is, '10% intelligence and 90% persistence'. As someone who's just recently passed their PhD, I really do believe this is true. People who stick it out to the end graduate eventually. The fact that a university admits the student to the program is an indication that the student has the capacity to complete the PhD project. Best wishes with the re-write :).

    The main guidance I’ve gotten about referencing is to find an example of the APA you will follow (like in a recent publication, etc) and just stick to it. Use the exact same citation source (I use citation generator cause I didn’t personally love Zotero) but whatever it is go tot he library ask them if your works cited and in text citations are correct and then just stay super consistent with it and teachers will usually totally accept that because referencing is a bit left open on some things, you really just have to pick an example to follow and stick to it!

    I know this doesn't compare but ... when my son took a final, he had to get a 90 in that class in order pass the entire semester with an A. The professor graded him an 89 (I'm sure he knew how much my son wanted to pass that class with an A. He wanted to make Dean's List) This was during c....d. The professor said he was willing to talk with him via zoom the next day and he would be asking questions ... so my son basically sweated it the entire 24 hours and the professor asked him questions over zoom as to what he could do to improve his grade by 1. My son told him he was never late to his class, always participated, and all his other grades were good. The professor gave him the extra 1% and he made Dean's List for the second time!

    As an adjunct faculty member and writing tutor with over five years of experience serving underserved populations, I have noticed a significant gap between the theoretical goals of academic leadership and the practical challenges faced by faculty and students. While I’m not working at the same level as you, I went through the same thing at the start of my Masters course, I was a high achiever, always top marks throughout high school and my Bachelor, then started getting awful marks at the start of the Masters, it was depressing, but you know it’s because we haven’t had much practice coping with failure, we may be academically talented and high achieving, but that doesn’t mean we don’t struggle with mental health
    What you’re saying about “not getting a birthday” etc. is exactly the kind of thing I used to say in high school and I seriously burnt myself out to the point where I was crying almost every single day and spending hours trying to get work done and just not doing it because my brain was just not on board. My advice as someone who is going through the same thing, albeit at a masters level, go back and do your work, improve those things you need to improve, but don’t break yourself going for 10/10, 8/10 is still pretty good right? What about 7/10? Having a PhD and being able to inject all this good into the world doesn’t rely on your ability to do assignments, it relies on the knowledge you clearly have gained throughout the semester. You may not have been able to show it through your assignment, but rest assured that if you agree with all the feedback you have, then you probably have all the knowledge you need
    As a side note, APA sucks, especially when you don’t know what the source actually “is” - report, thesis, book, chapter, journal article, etc. I’m thinking in my next assignment I’ll only use a source if I know what it is lol
