    Thanks for the video! I didn't realize these machines locked this way for straight lines. I spent around 15 hours straight line quilting a king size quilt on my home machine 1/4 inch apart. My arms felt like Popeye when I got done lol. I feel like so many people criticize straight line quilting and it makes me sad. I am pretty good at free motion quilting and hand quilting but I genuinely just prefer the look of channel stitching most of the time (which I think is the same as what you called matchstick or similar) or sometimes I do a cross hatch. I really wish people would stop criticizing this style of quilting or insinuating that only unskilled people do it.

      I bet! That sounds painful! I know what you mean about straight line quilting. Anyone that feels the need to be critical of someone elses choices just needs to get a life in my opinion! Most likely that stems from jealousy anyway. They probably wish they could stitch that simply, but the critical voices in their head won't let them.

    Leah, I really enjoy watching all of your videos. You're so easy to listen to, while sharing your wealth of knowledge! You are the queen of quilting tutorials! My question is: how many (Grace Co?) channel locks do you use on the carriage, where are they all located when using them? I could only see one being used in this video. I need to order them, but not sure how many I'll need to quilt straight lines (horizontally and vertically). Please don't ever stop sharing your useful tips, wisdom, quilting experience and gadget info! You rock!! :)

      Thank you Carol! You've made my day! Channel locks are included with your frame, so if you don't have them already, you might not have a frame compatible. We only started including them with the Continuum Frame so only the Continuum, Continuum II, Hoop Frame, Hoop Frame Pro, and Cutie frames have this accessory.
      There are two included with our frames - one for the carriage to lock the machine so it only rolls forward and back, and one for the machine so it only rolls side to side.
      I'll have a new video out next week that will feature channel locks again! And no, I don't plan to ever stop sharing videos. There's so much stuff to play with and explore and share!

      @@LeahDay Thanks for your very kind reply! I now have my Cutie frame which didn't come w/channel locks. Is that what you meant by not being compatible? I've noticed other quilters using them on Cutie, so now I'm wondering...Also thinking of getting Grace Speed control gizmo...but not sure if it's compatible w/Janome 6700P? Pls let me know and I'll check your shop to see if both available. :)

    Leah Hello my new quilting friend! Your videos inspired me to buy the 19 x elite, and I know I am going to love it on my queen frame, one small issue has become a headache, the channel locks I received. I have attached the right back one, but the manual only shows directions for that one. A second came with this purchase, the back left wheel has the encoder hooked up, so where does the back one go, wish I had a picture, as I am a visualize very much so person, I did not even understand what a channel lock was for till I seen this video and read a comment from Peach to you, then it all clicked, now if only my channel lock would, please help me. and Thanks! Also the back bungee small cords did not come in package do i need them for the queen frame if I purchase the red snapper clamps?

    Can you use channel locks for vertical quilting. Love your Craftsy class.

    • @LeahDay
      @LeahDay  3 роки тому

      Sure, but the limitation is the vertical height of your frame. So in the video I had around 10 inches of quilting space in my Qnique 15. So I could do vertical lines using the channel locks, but they would only be 10 inches high. I hope that makes sense! Horizontal lines can span the entire width of the quilt so that's far more common.

    Hi Leah,
    I was wondering if by the end of this quilt the channel locks were still lined up straight with the panel design? Or did you run into issues keeping things lined up? My dealer says channel locks aren’t all they’re cracked up to be, bc no matter how hard you try to keep the fabric straight, they will eventually end up crooked compared to the quilt design. In your experience, is she right? Bc it think this is the cat’s meow, for certain projects. Haven’t tried them yet; just got my long arm. But i didn’t want an unpleasant surprise. 🌷

    • @LeahDay
      @LeahDay  3 роки тому +1

      Great question Susan! The key is starting straight and working with straight fabric / pieced quilt. Yes, I'm sure issues DO crop up if you don't start straight, or the quilt itself isn't pieced evenly. Lately I've been using a laser light shooting across my frame to ensure the quilt stays straight as I load it. I often machine baste as I attach the quilt to the frame to also help it stay in correct alignment.
      And no, I wouldn't use channel locks to stitch in the ditch - they are just not that accurate for that. Shifting the quilt just 1/8 inch could pop you out of the ditch to one side or the other. For that level of accuracy, use a ruler like this - leahday.com/products/ditcher-quilting-ruler

    • @susanmei9980
      @susanmei9980 3 роки тому

      Thank you so much! Do you have a video on using the laser light as you load the quilt? That sounds helpful. Also, a video on basting as you load the quilt? That also would be helpful.
      Getting back to the red quilt with the channel locks, I know you were very careful to load it straight. So did you run into problems, keeping it straight, by the time you reached the end of the quilt? Or did it turn out great with no struggles?
      No judgement, of course. I would just really like to know your experience on this. It will be very valuable to me, either way. I can learn from your experience! Thank you! 🌷

    Can I use the channel locks if I am doing a triangle design across the border???

    • @LeahDay
      @LeahDay  4 роки тому

      No. Channel locks are intended for straight line only. If you're changing directions to quilt a triangle, this won't be helpful. I'd try ruler quilting instead and a straight edge ruler like the Ditcher - leahday.com/products/ditcher-quilting-ruler

    Hi Leah, I'm not having luck on your site with contacting you. So I'm rewriting here, does the Unique have a stitch regulator when you free motion quilt and does the frame collapse to move to another room in-between quilts, I'm limited on space but could wheel it around if it does that. Talk about
    that next week or what ever is easiest. Thank you, your video is very helpful and inspiring, I need a
    longarm :)

    • @LeahDay
      @LeahDay  5 років тому +1

      Hi Patricia! I'm sorry about that, I was running behind on my comments. No, the Qnique cannot be collapsed in the way you're thinking. It's not really designed to work that way and you really wouldn't want to because it takes so much time to get it set up and leveled. This is something that requires a dedicated room - a dining room or spare bedroom are great choices if you aren't using them much. I hope that helps!
