I looked up July stores on their website after seeing this video and there just happened to be one near me in Sydney where I was staying. They had a sale in the store for $100 off $600 purchase so I got a limited edition matte light grey checked trunk along with a water bottle (so I could push it over the $600 threshold for the discount). Because of the exchange rate, I ended up paying $350 USD for a new luggage with a lifetime warranty and a water bottle. Thanks for the heads up Max!
Good choice! I got the checked trunk in matte brown. I love it, but I paired it with an Away Aluminum Bigger Carryon. I’m kind of wishing I also got the carryon July trunk, but as a compromise I also got a Monos Hybrid medium checkin. Having gotten three I’m can’t quite justify the carryon trunk. Again….good move!

Finally a complete review on the July trunk. I went to the grand opening here in New York. Just couldn’t pull the ticket and get the trunk. I only bought the tote. I really want the trunk but recently came back from Florida and Jet Blue destroyed my checked MVST medium polycarbonate suitcase. I can’t ever use it again it no longer locks. So I want the July trunk, but only thinking about getting the carryon where I am in full control. I would break down and cry if after paying $545 it got destroyed. So I will probably just get the carry on truck. Do you really think it’s worth it. Please honest opinion. Thanks Happy New Year.
Honest opinion: yes worth it, only thing I would avoid the glossy finish if you’re worried about scratches. My wife loves the trunk style for the checked bag and I like the carry on. I’ve been looking for a suitcase that has an aluminum frame and polycarbonate body that doesn’t look ugly and would last and July trunks checked all the boxes.
July suitcases look very nice Max! I am thinking about purchasing clear suit case cover for my new Monos Checked suitcase on my next trip. It's probably not necessary for Carry On Bag, but I think it's worthy option for most Checked Bags. Knowing how much abuse Checked Bags can go through it could be a very good investment for little money. You probably don't want your brand new shiny July bag to get all kinds of marks or dings on your next trip. 😋😄
The weight shown on their website is WRONG!! Just bought the carry on trunk and weighed it and it’s a Whopping 10.8 lbs!! That’s too heavy and average Cary on weight limit is 22lbs. It’s sooo pretty and luxurious, I wish I could keep it but I’m going to return it :( Can you do your own measurements and weighing in your future videos ??
The biggest problem with July luggage (if you live in the USA) is with the carry-on size. It is an Australian company. Strictly speaking, the carry-on is too wide (14.5 inches) to officially meet carry-on criteria for most major US airlines. Although you’ll get away with it most of the time. The only piece that catches my interest is the check-in trunk. But really…. It’s a vanity thing. My Briggs-Riley baseline luggage has been serving me well for so long and will probably outlast me. And get rid of the battery slot. You officially can’t put a battery in the overhead stow bins due to fire risk. It should stay in your smaller personal carry on bag.
still like it, going to be using it for an upcoming international trip. Only thing I would say is maybe get the matte versions of the luggage if you are worried about seeing scuffs and sratches on the glossy finish

@@duyent no issues with the carry-on trunk. It’s lighter than rimowa aluminum and tumi aluminum and I never had issues with either one of those so I don’t expect ever having any issues with the July carry-on.
It’s hardside Japanese design! Popular in Asia. Just got one and was drawn to the only hardside on the market with top open. Perfect for small place or for people like me who just don’t like to spread luggage open in hotel room. Would love to hear what you think if you get your hands on it
I've used Lojel Cubo for the past three years. Great design as it opens the same way as July with minimal footprint. Used in Japan, Cambodia, Vietnam and Thailand. Considering July for European trip.
I think it's terrible that they don't have zipper inside. Zipper can help to keep things in place as it seals all your things in. The clipper just doesn't do it for people like me who love to shop during travel and it cannot zip my things up.
A suitcase that's 90% perfect, it's just a shame they used polycarbonate for the looks. Polypropylene would be much sturdier, you can see how much your lid flexed when you press down on it, that's what will cause it to crack especially if the suitcase isn't completely full. The Lojel Voja or Samsonite Essens are probably the most durable you can get and the closest to an indestructible bag on the market, similar to what Samsonite's Oyster was in the 90s as the shell is significantly thicker. Give them a try if you have the chance!
You might be mistaking polycarbonate for ABS. Polycarbonate is tougher and more resistant to cracking than polypropylene. Polycarbonate rarely fractures and is way more expensive than polypropylene. It dents in and then pops back out to original form (with a subtle dent at the site of buckling). When I see fractured polycarbonate luggage, I wonder whether it is 100% polycarbonate (and not cheapened mixture) or whether there was a design flaw by the manufacturer. I’m actually wary of aluminum reinforced corners on polycarbonate luggage. I think a hard whack against the corner would transfer the stress to the aluminum-plastic junction rather than allowing the plastic just to dent in and then pop back out. Scuff protection? Fine. Actual fracture protection? No. My wife thought our polycarbonate luggage was thin and flimsy and flexible (which it is except flimsy). I had to demonstrate why it is flexible by kicking in the side with my entire body weight and popping it back out showing her that it won’t fracture.
@@badkid73 I totally agree with you about hybrid suitcases. Rimowa has had numerous people reporting cracking of the plastic on their hybrid suitcases, of course from the aluminium passing the forces on through the fasteners into the plastic. I have to disagree about polycarbonate for suitcases though at least as a long-term investment. It has a significantly lower fatigue life (around 50%) to polypropylene. While it will deflect more before failing, it develops fatigue lines at the same time, which is especially true on corners. It's also extremely prone to environmental stress cracking compared to polypropylene. Simply wiping it with various detergent, household cleaners or solvents or even the adhesives in stickers over time will cause hairline cracks in the material to develop. Polycarbonate also becomes more crack-prone with age. Not to say polypropylene is perfect, but a well built polypropylene case is stiffer and generally built much thicker so reduces cracking through an overall sturdier shell and keeps impacts from affecting the contents of your bag. Of course if you subject any of them to enough force they will fail, but the Samsonite Oyster is about as close a suitcase as you can get to a Pelican case which also are made from polypropylene and in a similar manner. Check out the reviews on the July Checked-in Trunk Plus. The very first time a person used it the entire suitcase sustained a hit and shattered. My father has had polypropylene Samsonite suitcases as well as me and they've all been through everything with no failures. Honestly I'd argue what the point of a polycarbonate suitcase is compared to a softside if it flexes that much but has increased chance of serious failure of the shell down the track, whereas the softside deforms too but is very, very unlikely to fail. They both commonly have zippers but even the stress put on the zippers is more on a polycarbonate shell suitcase than on a softside during an impact. The only real advantage to a polycarbonate one over softside is water resistance and style. Between a Pelican Travel luggage, or similar polypropylene suitcase like a Samsonite Maxsum or Magnum or Essens, I would be confident that in 5-10 years of the same use, they would be in better condition than a polycarbonate suitcase and have protected the contents better at the same time.
@@cheryln7564 They are, zipperless is by far the strongest option. My first choice would be the Samsonite Essens, it's a reputable brand and parts are easily available everywhere. The Essen has 3 separate latches (one on each side) If you wanted a polycarbonate zipperless option, there is also the Samsonite Framelock Max which is what I recently used on a trip through Europe, a very nice suitcase. They have multiple latches per side all actuated in one place, although it isn't water-tight like the Essens which has an O-ring seal and the latches do feel more delicate - dare I say it less secure - so I used luggage straps just in case - no issues encountered though. I would imagine the Essens would be the best combination of durability.

I don't know of many luggages that have zippers inside. The only one I know of is my Tumi luggage.
