ROGUE ONE A STAR WARS STORY + ANDOR 4K UHD REVIEWS

- Reviews to the 4K UHD Blu-rays of both ROGUE ONE and series one of ANDOR. ANDOR is a prequel to ROGUE ONE and tells the story of how Cassian Andor became a hero of the rebellion. However, there is a second series expected during 2025 so even though series one appears to link up very well into ROGUE ONE there is more to come.
ROGUE ONE comes with Dolby Atmos sound whereas previously it was DTS 7.1 on the Blu-ray. Image aspect ratio is 2.40:1 approximately.
ANDOR is 12 episodes running between 40 minutes to around 50 minutes each. Image aspect ratio is approximately 2.40:1. 4K discs have Dolby Atmos sound whereas the Blu-ray discs in the pack come with DTS 5.1.
ANDOR was loaned to me by a long time friend (thank you Rrrrrroberto) and ROGUE ONE was a gift from Stuart Hilliker which, as I mentioned in the video sent me a £50 voucher for a couple of 4K discs after transferring the soundtrack from his 35mm theatrical trailer of Roman Polanski's 1980 film 'TESS'. Stuart then married that soundtrack to a re-edit of the trailer he carried out from the Blu-ray disc, plus the end captions from the 35mm trailer, and the finished product can be seen on UA-cam here: • Tess Trailer 1979
UPDATE: Both Roder and David James looked into the Ultra Panavision filming for Rogue One and they have confirmed that this information was incorrect. Just the Ultra Panavision lenses were used on video cameras. Ultra Panavision was a 65mm filming process with a 1.25x anamorphic squeeze lens giving an approximate image aspect ratio of 1.75:1. This means the final image as shot was cropped at the sides so it did all seem a little strange and particularly so given that there was no obvious place within the movie that stood out as the far superior filming format. Thank you to Erik (Roder) and David James for clarifying this issue. If I remember, I will talk about it in the forthcoming review of Star Wars The Force Awakens and series 1 and 2 of Mandalorian. John.
I ADORED Rogue One, the best film since the original trilogy. Must grab a copy. Thanks John!
Just don't expect exceptional image quality Key because much of it is rather too dark and murky looking. John.
gotta agree completely.
This is my favorite video you’ve made! I think Andor is the best Star Wars cinema we’ve received since Rogue One and the original Trilogy. I think the 4Ks are still superior on my Sony 77” OLED but of course YMVV! You’re the best John. Cheers!
Rogue One does look somewhat better with brighter light going through it but it's still a little underwhelming here. I didn't put it through my telly though so it's quite possible the much smaller image will help. The video projector matched up to my rather disappointing memory of how it looked at the BFI IMAX so it wasn't a big surprise to find it a little lacklustre in places. That's not the case with The Force Awakens which probably looks even better than the original film.
John.
Fantastic reviews as always John. I’m prepping for my Star Wars chronological watch soon, I will add Andor to the list.
I watched The Last Jedi again (finally) yesterday and although it''s not exactly good, it's not as bad as I considered it was previously. I'd like to screen The Rise of Skywalker again as I recall that one looking very good and almost on a par with The Force Awakens but not such a good film and certainly lacking the genuine IMAX sequence that sets The Force Awakens apart. I don't think I'd ever get the time to watch every Star Wars film and series one after the other though so good luck with achieving that.
John.
Andor is essential viewing. It’s an amazing Star Wars story and relies on story and characters rather than set pieces and stupid tropes. Andor season 2 is top 3 anticipated this year.
I think Andor was aimed at a more adult audience than the Star Wars movies. I suppose the thinking is that many of us who enjoyed Star Wars in 1977 and 78 are now in our twenties!
John.
Rogue One is a great film. And I agree, the robot is bloody hillarious! 👍
I think it's just the overall image quality that let's down Rogue One a bit. Other than that, it's pretty darned wonderful. John.
Rogue One is my third favorite SW movie. I find it more enjoyable on every viewing. #1 The Empire Strikes Back #2 A New Hope
Rogue One does suffer a bit due to the low quality picture for so much of it. The Empire Strikes Back has the climax at the beginning and doesn't have an ending. Star Wars is just about perfect. But Iike them all except the second and third prequel films. John.
Thank you for the reviews ❤ I really really like Rougue One, which I also own on 4k 😊
Thank you Andrea. I'm fairly sure that Rogue One is a better movie the more times you watch it. John.
@moviecollector5920 Sure, it is dear Jhon 😊
I've never had an issue with Rogue One in 4K, I watch on an LG C2 55" and I think it looks great.
It certainly needs a lot of light punched through Andy it but it looked relatively poor at the BFI IMAX so the lacklustre imagery is a problem. A smaller screen would probably help though so that could be what you're experiencing. John.
Love Rogue One, amazing Star Wars movie and a cracking 4K disc.
Funnily enough, I don't think it has a very good looking for long sections of it. That's nothing to do with the 4K disc of course, but it's just not exactly the best looking thing I've ever seen. By contract, the 4K disc of The Force Awakens looks fabulous and that's because that one did look fabulous to start with in cinemas. John.
Horses for courses but I personally love Andor and watched many times looking forward to season 2. I just love the normal low tech resistance to the Empire other than the glitzy heroes. Do love it all tho😂
I think I'd enjoy Andor and Rogue One even more if they had the image quality of the original Star Wars and The Force Awakens. Apart from that, very good. John.
Thanks again for another great video, John! I am an avid Rogue One fan and have both the 4k and 3D versions. I know it's a dark picture but as a movie, it's up there with the originals for me.
Quite annoying Disney no longer releases physical media in Australia. Keen to get (your recently reviewed) Alien: Romulus one day.
By the way, I'm pretty sure the next season of Andor will feature K2SO so really looking forward to that. Just a shame we (obviously) won't see Felicity in Andor.
Look forward to your next video, as always! 📽
Felicity Jones is excellent and her English accent is a big reason for why she comes across so well. I think she's better than Daisy Ridley but I like them both.
John.
Great reviews John I love Rogue One like it even more I watch it . ANDOR was a slog at first like you said it's gets better as the series goes on and alot better on rewatch . 👍💯
I think Rogue One is like a lot of action adventure movies Andy because there is so much going on that we need to watch them multiple times to catch everything. John.
@@moviecollector5920yeah agree definitely action film John it was also directed by two different directors someone came in half way through to help Gareth Edwards
@@andylikesstuffchannel I didn't know that Andy. We all learn something new every day.
Rouge One is easily one of the better Star Wars movies. I just bought a 4k TV, but not a 4k player(money issue) and what movie to test the new TV? Rogue One. It was a beauty. Can only imagine what its like on 4k. But is the 4k that much better than the blu-ray picture and audio wise? Great video as usual John👍
The 4K is much better than the Blu-ray Morten but it's not exactly the best looking movie. Much of it has a stylized grade which renders the interior shots quite drab looking. The Force Awakens is much better and possibly even better imagery than the original film. John.
This was very interesting. Makes me wanna rewatch Rouge One.
I think Rogue One needs a few repeat viewings to fully appreciate it Timothy as it's too dark for so much of it. John.
@@moviecollector5920would you say the regular blu ray looks the same as the 4K
Another amazing video thanks john😮❤❤❤❤❤
Thank you Timmy. John.
I loved Rogue One. and also Andor. Andor really pays off after the first 3 ep or so. i need to rewatch those before season 2.
I thought episode 3 of Andor was one of the best Luis. By the end of it though, I found myself really enjoying it all. John.
Hi John! Tad late getting to this one but thanks so much. With ya on this as I really love R One too. Gonna stick with the blu ray as you suggest as it's good enough for me I watch it from time to time . Have to admit I've never seen Andor myself just havn't made time but many subscribers here say it's great so must see for myself. Hoping all is good with you guys over there and all the best D in BC!!
I think it's probably best to be a complete Star Wars nerd to get the best out of Andor and any other Star Wars spin-off series Dave. I liked it but probably wouldn't have been so happy if I'd have spent £40 on that steelbook set. I'm just working on the next video and The Mandalorian will be in that one. I think it's the better of the two Star Wars series I've seen so far.
John.
@@moviecollector5920 Excellent news as me wife and I did complete the Mandalorian (all 3 seasons) together. Can't wait your thoughts! Have a great weekend D!!
Just as a sidenote: have now seen The Brutalist in 70mm at the BFI Southbank, and have to say the VistaVision comes across very well. There's some sunshine filled shots near the beginning of Part 2 that are some of the most beautiful i've ever seen. Other parts have a painting like look to the live action. Film as visual art. The film itself is surprisingly easy to sit through considering its length. Although the intermission helps, its still very well paced which is why you don't feel it dragging. Music and sound design are also extremely effective. Along with some very satisfying acting and dialogue. If you can John I'd recommend attending while its still around. It's also playing in 70mm at Picturehouse Central
off Shaftesbury Avenue. And in 35mm at other venues.
That is very welcome news David because I feared another 4K to film fudge like we've seen so often. The life gets sucked out of the film somehow once it's been through a computer but perhaps they've finally cracked it. It's unlikely I'll be able to travel to London for a while but perhaps the Prince Charles will get the 70mm print and have it on screen for an occasional showing a few times a week for some time. As long as the landlord hasn't closed them down by then of course.
John.
Thanks for the review John. I saw Rogue One at the cineworld Imax in Nottinghan which was not proper imax but video imax. On my way back home from the film, I heard on the radio that Carrie Fisher had died and I had just seen the cgi of a young Carrie at the end of Rogue One, it was very upsetting to hear that news. Not how I wanted to end the day. By the way, some Andor scenes were filmed in Blackpool just up from the tower on the main drag!!
Carrie Fisher seems to have had quite a sad life. Very upsetting when she died at a relatively young age. And then her mother went a few days later as I recall.
I didn't know Blackpool was used in Rogue One. Next time I run it I'll keep a lookout for it.
John.
@moviecollector5920 John, it was Andor that was partly shot in Blackpool not Rogue One😀
@@darkvader7231 Sorry Dark, I'm really must take some reading lessons! I think I saw Canary Wharf in Rogue One but that may have been Andor too. I'm getting all this Star Wars viewing a little mixed up right now as I've just watched The Force Awakens, The Last Jedi and The Rise of Skywalker in preparation for the next UA-cam video. John.
@moviecollector5920 No need for apologies John, happens to me all the time😉
It's funny, I got bored of Andor the first time I watched it, but the second time, I really enjoyed all the nuances and finesses, and now the second season is my most looked-forward to series this year. Well, along with the Daredevil reboot and the fourth series of Professor T and Dalgliesh. :D
I don't know how you'll ever find the time to get through them all Alex but have a great time when you do. It's taken us well over a month to watch Mandalorian series 1 and 2 and then Andor. John.
@@moviecollector5920 I definitely manage to watch a lot fewer movies than you, John, so it probably balances out.
@@alexlalligator4376 For the past year or so I've been trying to increase the number of films I watch Alex but it's still a good week if I manage to get through five or six. Pathetic really but that's about as good as it gets.
John.
Enjoyed Rogue One John. Thanks
I expect most of us who are into Star Wars enjoy Rogue One Craig. We're not alone! John.
Great job John....I must give rouge one a revisit.... couldn't get into it the first time I watched it..... Thanks again.👍
It's a little dull to look at for much of it Roy and that adversely affects it. But a few repeated viewings and I think we start to see more and more in there. John.
bonjour voila encore une bonne Vidèo sur se 4k star Wars merci
Merci Alain. Oui, je suis un peu fan de Star Wars. J'espère que vous restez bien là-bas en France. John.
Very good, thank you, John.
You're welcome Tyo. John.
Very good to hear you enjoyed Andor, and i enjoyed it more on second viewing. Regarding Rogue One, it gets better for me every single watch, albeit it was shot on digital with some very dicey digital characters but story great, characters superb and some truly amazing special effects.
The biggest problem with Rogue One is that it's too dark for so much of it. But that probably does hide a load of inadequacies. Shame they didn't put the awful reproduction of Peter Cushing more in the shadows though. John.
@moviecollector5920 lol yes exactly
Rogue One is my favorite SW film. I thought it looked phenomenal in the cinema.
Punching an excessive amount of light through Rogue One helps so it could be that the cinema you saw it in had a xenon lamp powered off its own nuclear reactor in-house! It is only the overall image quality that lets the film down and if we're able to look past that it's a great Star Wars flick. John.
K-S20 reminds me a lot of the beloved killer droid HK-47 in Knights of the Old Republic, undoubtedly one of the best Star Wars games ever created. With a mix of TARS' humour setting at about 70%
The KS20 robot is brilliant. I did play a Star Wars computer game for a while years ago called 'Rebel Assault' but after getting so far I realized I wasn't enjoying it, gave up and never played a computer game ever again. I think I would have enjoyed it but the computers of the time couldn't cope with the speeds required and so it was almost impossible to progress.
John.
Rogue One and Andor are Disney's best Star Wars, most would miss the series because of Andor not being a popular character maybe? They filmed in Cleveleys near me which was cool lol 😅
I put The Force Awakens above them all so far. It's actually my second favourite to the original Star Wars. It's certainly got the best image quality during that genuine 15/70 IMAX sequence too.
John.
I’m glad that the studio have done season 2 and air. I have the Rogue one on blu-ray when it came out and enjoy it very much, the story, how it ties from cinema episode 3 to 4, knowing who the two rebels that Ep 4 refers to. I do admit the first five episodes of the season are slow, but buckle up it speeds up. Do enjoy mandelorian but didn’t purchase it. Obi wan is ok, but they are not doing season two. Season two of Andor is going to be fast paced since originally it was supposed to be 5 seasons, so season 2-5 are on this season 2 to get you to Rogue One. Reason I have read is that if they would have done all the seasons, not only will it take about ten years, but the actors will age. I may get Rogue One on 4K, my 4k player does do upscale. Named my cat Rogue.
The 4K is better than the Blu-ray but it wasn't the best looking movie ever made so don't expect too much. People have been telling me that it looks good on OLED tellies so I suspect OLED sets are punching much more light through it somehow. I usually have the video projector here with the lamp output set to 50% but it ended up on 100% for Rogue One. With HDR increased a little too it looked much better and very good in places but all this did confirm that my impression and recollection from the screening at the BFI IMAX was correct i.e. that Rogue One overall looks a little lacklustre. I've since watched The Force Awakens and I think that one is even better than Star Wars which proves yet again that film is still superior to video. Or, it was up to eight years ago anyway.
By the way, I thought episode 3 of Andor was one of the best. I wouldn't have watched it if my friend hadn't have suggested I borrow his copy (and The Mandalorian too) and told me that I should do a review. It's funny how things work out sometimes and I'm pleased to have seen them.
John.
rogue one had a same day release in the states and the uk i remember it well . Season 2 of andor should finish leading up to rogue one. good video
I suppose the UK didn't have to wait for the US film prints to become available by 2016 Chris. Those days had largely gone by then. A shame though because the image quality had been quite dramatically reduced during those downturn years. John.
Season 2 is out this April , Andor gets alot of hate because its so different to anything we have had from Star wars , its dark gritty and superbly directed by Tony Gilroy.
I can't understand why anyone would hate it. It's just a television/streaming series after all. Anyone who doesn't like it, just don't watch it. Seems odd to me to hate movies and tv programmes.
John.
@moviecollector5920 as you alluded too people can't handle the slow pacing of the show , they don't understand it part of something bigger as season 2 connects to Rogue one. But I love Andor I think it's better visually than Mando because it was filmed on location instead of a digital set.
@@4Kmichelinstarmovies I think the Mandalorian is more aimed at children too which is possibly why I think I preferred The Mandalorian!!! John.
Wow, I loved Andor.. please tell us your ranking in the next review 🙏🏻 I love madalorian season 2
I'm not sure I have a ranking Dean but Star Wars is the best and I think The Force Awakens is second. John.
Thank you John.
Well done Cheekster, as usual! John.
Thank you, john. I totally agree with you that the show is rather stretched out - however, it does make you appreciate parts of rogue one more
I recently saw the 4k of Jackie brown, what a phenomenal transfer - it's improved much from the blu ray and has wonderful HDR application
I think Jackie Brown is a couple of months away here in the UK. Same with the Kill Bill films. John.
I've just this minute got Andor through the letter box lol haven't seen it yet but loved your review mate and no i still haven't got a 4k tv yet lol i know i know lol
Well done David. If the Blu-rays are in the pack, I think they're good enough. John.
Rouge one has such a melancholy towards the end doesn't it? just starting to dig these new characters and boom..gone though Seeing Vader again being Vader was exciting and Grand Moff Tarkin Felicity jones and Diego Luna were so great
I find the reproduction of Peter Cushing rather awful and probably the worst aspect of Rogue One. Carrie Fisher's appearance is a bit better but still obviously a cartoon drawn over the top. Not that it matters much as you have to suspend disbelief with all these sort of movies. Felicity Jones, in particular, is impressive but they all had to be killed off at the end because otherwise it wouldn't have matched up with Star Wars.
John.
As I understand it, John, Rogue One wasn't actually shot on Ultra Panavision 70 film, but the lenses were attached to Digital Cameras. The same thing happened on Avengers: Endgame, and Kenneth Branaugh used them on A Haunting In Venice to mimic the 70mm filming he did on the two previous Poirot films.
Erik did say the same thing David but I did read about the 1.25 squeeze meaning the sides of the final image had to be cropped. Perhaps that was the same with the resultant video. Whatever the case, it doesn't appear to have worked out particularly well.
John.
One thing I do give ANDOR credit for no Light Sabers Jedi all underground lower level and stayed to it .
The light sabre duels do tend to get on my nerves a little these days Andy. But the best one of all was Darth Maul facing Qui-Gon and Obi Wan. That was fantastic. John.
Interesting video John thx.
I enjoyed rogue one and I've seen season 1 of mandalorian, ashoka and the acolyte, but not bothered with Andor for some reason.
After watching this I need to get round to Andor, so had a quick Google for the 4K as I no longer have Disney+. It looks like its only available in a steelbook which has either sold out or £100 on eBay.
Andor is probably best as a standard Blu-ray given that it's not exactly the best looking video ever issued and it's a series not a film or video movie. Perhaps there's just a Blu-ray option available. John.
I loved rogue one and enjoyed andor..looking forward to season 2
Let's hope series 2 is just as enjoyable. John.
When you talked about Rogue One having lacklustre 65mm image quality, you were more right than you knew. I was shocked when I heard you said that it was partially shot on 65mm; it would mean that analogue film could look not like analogue film ...
... *at* _all_ . I did a little digging: Rogue One was shot entirely digitally, but it was partially shot with Ultra Panavision 70 lenses.
That makes sense Erik. I'll have to check the end titles again because it certainly says about the Ultra Panavision 70 and it may also state Kodak film. I did read that the Ultra Panavision was cropped at the sides too because of the extra wide aspect ratio. Tres interessant.
John.
@@moviecollector5920 Yes, I wonder what the end credits say.
IMDb lists 'Codex' as the only negative format used to shoot the film and it (perhaps erroneously) lists Ultra Panavision 70 as a 'source format' used in the production of the film (erroneous in the sense that only Ultra Panavision 70 lenses was used).
The Wikipedia article for Ultra Panavision 70 lists Rogue One as one of a select few films that have been shot digitally with Ultra Panavision 70 lenses.
@@loekegaard9 This does explain why nothing much stands out as having a film origin within its total running time Erik. It also explains why the lacklustre imagery rather stood out at the BFI IMAX. I'll have to remember to talk about this in the next video and because that should be The Force Awakens I'll have a perfect opportunity because that one has a five or six minute 15/65 sequence which did look fantastic at the IMAX... the Science Museum Ronson Theatre IMAX in this case.
John.
@@moviecollector5920 Yes, The Force Awakens should look good on 4K video disc (despite that is was finished digitally with a 4K DI): that film was at least shot on real film (and, as you say, in 15/65 IMAX for a select sequence).
Rogue One is definitely my favorite recent Star Wars movie as it ties in so well at the end with the first Star Wars. My only criticism is the digital recreations of Peter Cushing and Carrie Fisher. I don't think those effects held up well and look a little wonky now.
Those two character recreations are dreadful. I was going to talk about them but I don't like to slag off movies and given that the rather poor image quality of Rogue One was enough of a critique, I ended up leaving out the appalling Peter Cushing attempt.
John.
rogue one is my favourite after the original trilogy, its aimed not at children luckily . I went to the Maldives and remember seeing Skywalker flight cases stacked up at the airport departure lougue, so i just missed the filming sadly..
What a shame - you could have donned a stormtrooper outfit and joined the fray! John.
@@moviecollector5920 in a ali g gstring and flip flops?????,,,lol
as 54 i only watched the first two episodes od Andor not my cup of tea and Rogue one I saw back in 2016 once it was just okay thank you for the review John
I think Rogue One was a little adversely affected by the image quality. I dare say it would be difficult to spot that on most tellies though so that's possibly a reason why it gets such high regard. Very good other than that though and probably one that improves the more times you see it.
John.
I saw RO for the first time since release (that I also saw at BFI imax and then again in a cinema in Cornwall) last year in Dolby Cinema in the Odeon West End. I don’t remember being blown away by it on those first watches but still definitely liked it, but wow was I blown away on that last watch. I can’t quite bring myself to say it’s *the* favourite SW film of mine - SW OT (and PT) is too heavily associated with a certain charm and cheese and spirit, which I don’t think RO has and could ever have had without a Skywalker element to the story and any of the great leads of the original cast(s) to be able to be knocked completely off a top spot - but damn if it isn’t well made and imo yes a very different kind of thrill compared to the OT/PT (I discount ST as not a fan of any of them personally) films. I think I’d say it’s definitely objectively one of if not the strongest piece of non-Skywalker saga SW media made to date and feel like I really should put it joint-favourite with whatever other no. 1 fav I find myself preferring at any time (realistically, SW ANH or ESB) - I felt it was that damn good on my last watch in that Dolby Cinema - but maybe a rewatch (on a good cinema screen!) is needed to see if it holds up as strongly a second (or technically fourth) time round.
On Andor, I’ve not seen it yet but have the discs, which I bought sealed from eBay but the 4K discs yes are all scratched. Checking Amazon reviews lots of people said they got scratched sets a second and third time on returning them. Ridiculous that they can get away with such poor quality control and way of packaging for the issue to be apparently as widespread as it is. I’m not 4K capable anyway (but ofc I still love the channel and your vids and the insight you provide) so will be watching off the blu rays when I get round to it anyway, but is a shame the product is faulty through no fault of the customer and difficult (if you bought at retail - unlike me where I have no recourse to returning for another copy for non-scratched discs) to address previously when it was still in stock and now impossible due to all the stock having been sold. For what it’s worth, the US version of the release saw two separate editions of the show being sold, one for the blu rays and one for the 4K, which didn’t stack the discs in either of the cases.
Sorry for the ramble thanks for the excellent vid again (loved the spot re: the camera/binocular things too)!
Compare the image quality of Rogue One, Andor and The Mandalorian and you will see they all suffer from the dowdy look to the interior sequences. That makes them somewhat dull to look at much of the time which isn't the case with Star Wars and the original two sequels and neither is it the case with The Force Awakens. But Rogue One is a very clever romp and up there with the best of the Star Wars films somewhere.
It's possible the stacked disc packaging within the Andor steelbooks was because it was all that could be supplied. This sort of thing is lacking in options these days so it's quite possible that was the problem.
John.
Interesting you prefer the force awakens to rogue one. For me the force awakens is a soft remake of the original film in many ways by jj abrams who I have always felt is a poor man's lucas and Spielberg without his one true voice as a filmmaker. I loved rogue one because it played it so serious and has by far the best entrance of darth vader in the series. I would say it's the 3rd best starwars film, starwars 2nd and empire in first. It also has some of the most artistic images in the series. The deathstar scene is so beautiful yet disturbing. Being bold and seeing such wonderful characters all perish was extremely powerful. Agree with you completely on k 250 as the best robot in the series, his death scene was also so powerful. Great starwars film and true to the spirit of starwars and empire. The last 3 main starwars films sadly for me are so broken narratively and poorly written that I can't take them seriously even though I do appreciate k ren as a great villian.
Morning Sagelight. What lets Rogue One down is the image quality. It's very good in places but lacklustre in so many of the interior scenes. It turns out that the whole thing appears to have been shot on video and so something went wrong there. To make a Star Wars film that stands up to the original it does need to be shot on film even to this day. And that is one area where The Force Awakens certainly shines. In fact, it certainly has the best image quality of all Star Wars movies during that single genuine IMAX sequence. It does lack an entirely believable villain and the replacement for the Death Star doesn't really work but other than that, it's as good as they come. The Empire Strikes Back is great but I well remember the disappointment it generated at the time; the climax is in the first half of the film, there is not a satisfactory ending because it's a middle chapter of a story and then there was the certain knowledge that we were all going to have to wait three years for the next instalment. Rogue One might actually be a better movie than Empire but it doesn't come close to the image quality and that has a big effect. For me, Star Wars is by far and away the best Star Wars film. The Force Awakens is probably second. It might then be The Phantom Menace but there are different reasons for that. It doesn't really fit into Star Wars as a whole but I've always found it such terrific fun and pretty hilarious in places.
John.
@moviecollector5920 thanks john. Thanks for the love for the phantom menace. Its unfairly treated.
@@sagelight7777 Jar Jar Binks makes me laugh every time.
@moviecollector5920 100 percent. The pod race and darth maul fight at the end are 2 of my favorite scenes in all the starwars films.
@@sagelight7777 The opening you see on just about all my Movie Collector videos shows my portable 35mm projector running a reel. The glimpses of frames that are shown are actually scenes from a few promotional teaser trailers that were issued by Fox and printed onto the front of reel 1 of Star Wars Episode 1: The Phantom Menace. That feature was given to me by my friend and colleague (i.e. my boss!) from the British Film Collectors Conventions, Keith Wilton. The pod race sequence is over reel 3 and reel 4 and Keith cut those sequences out, put an intro and a 'The End' caption on the tail and loaned that compilation to Derann Film Services who arranged for it to be issued as a Super 8 extract reel. Many film collectors around the world still have copies today and it's a brilliant Star Wars collectable. Keith very much liked the film but one day he told me that I would run the film far more than he ever would so told me to take it home with me. I have run it many, many times and I seem to appreciate it even more every time I do run it. With my latest Kinoton projector I'm now enjoying it with the Dolby Digital soundtrack which 25 years ago seemed like an impossibility at home to us. The sound is incredible and better than the Blu-ray equivalent. Then again, I do play the 35mm films somewhat louder!
John.
I personally really liked Rogue One. I enjoy it more than then the Episodes 1-3 & 8-9. Still the original 3 are my favorite and A Force Awakening I thought was good. But in that movie I really liked seeing Solo and Chewbacca. The Andor series can be a little slow in parts but I think a lot of it is the story they are trying to tell. Second season of Andor is supposed to be out in a few months. Really look forward to that. As a side note is was nice seeing Andy Serkis also in Andor. It's nice to see him as the actor and not as King Kong or Smeagol.
You're thoughts about Star Wars are similar to my own but I think I put The Force Awakens in the number 2 spot. The only Star Wars films I really don't like are Attack of the Clowns and Revenge of the Pith. The Last Jedi isn't exactly brilliant but it does have what may be the best ever opening to a Star Wars film.
John.
Enjoyed Rogue One but didn’t think much of Andor after the first 2-3 episodes. Others seemed to enjoy it far more, though.
Andor's a bit slow for much of it but a few of the episodes are good to very good. The last two probably being the pick of the bunch but the third might be up there with them. John.
After your review of Andor I went on Amazon and found I'd have to pay over £80. Would love to have watched it but cant afford that price. Anyway enjoyed your review being a Star Wars nut myself!
I think that steelbook I show is about £40 Keith. If there's a standard Blu-ray release then that would be the one to go for. John.
Andor sold out on Amazon and HMV online. I'll keep looking!
@@keithevans7996 I expect there will be an Andor series 1 and 2 pack available once the second series is released. Might be worth waiting.
Andor is by far the best Star Wars tv show and is 100 times better than the Mandalorian.
Funnily enough Kieran, I prefer The Mandalorian. We're all different and thank gawd for that! John.
@@moviecollector5920no worries mate. I love Andor as it's serious star wars. There is so much popcorn/children's star wars out there, that it's just a breath of fresh air. 🙂 I didn't mind the first season of The Mandalorian, but it steadily went down hill after that.
@@kieransmith1796 I love the childish nature of the Star Wars films and that's a big reason for the success of The Mandalorian because that Grego puppet thing (or whatever he's called) is hilarious and so cute. But scenes involving some of the more ridiculous creatures get on my nerves at times. John.
I watched the first episode of Andor but just didnt bother continuing for some reason. It seemed alright but maybe one of those you need to keep going a while before it sticks. I agree about the look of these releases. Sometimes quite unappealing dreary dark grey computer generated mess.
The outdoor sequences look good Dave, it's just most of the interior shots give a dowdy impression. It was the same throughout Rogue One so I suppose they're all making Star Wars series that match that now. John.
The U.S. Version if Andor Steelbook doesn’t have the stacked discs, by the way. Let’s hope that is the way (forward).
I suspect a lot of it comes down to what is available now Alex. John.
I really liked Andor the slower exposition didnt bother me, ive always liked Rogue One the real prequel to Star wars. Looking fwd to Season two.
It's just a shame Rogue One didn't share the same better image quality of Star Wars. It would have been possible because The Force Awakens may have even surpassed the quality of the original. John.
I’ve never watched andor mostly because I’ve been tired of franchise films and ready for something new but idk I’ve been watching the original trilogy harmys despecialized edition blu rays and it’s magical how beautiful they look despite how old the effects are the special editions make us forget what those movies really looked like
The original three films were great. The special effects were a sensation but perhaps many of them got a little too quick by the time of Return of the Jedi. I have all three of them as Super 8 features so that's how I'll always want to watch them.
John.

This is so far the only Disney Star Wars I will include besides rouge one. I’ll also say one other show that I still consider canon is the genndy tartakovsky Star Wars clone wars show (I call it the 2d clone wars). It’s more samurai jack then straight Star Wars but man if it’s not awesome and efficient although the voice for anakin I don’t love but worth your time if your a Star Wars fan. Also John o bought a player and a few movies for a friend getting married and hope they will enjoy it.
I'm sure your friend and his new wifey are going to have years of enjoyment with that little pressie you go them Jesse. As for the Star Wars films, the original is obviously the best but I think I have The Force Awakens in second place. John.
Andor is best consumed with the mindset that the series works as 3-episode arcs. Otherwise, this and Rogue One set the bar for Star Wars at it's best.
It's just a shame so much of Andor and Rogue One are so dull to look at. The same was applied to The Mandalorian too so it seems to be a fixed Star Wars style now. John.
As good as 'Andor' generally is, a complaint of mine is that it feels like it's one location (Iceland exteriors) and not a 'galaxy far, far away,'. And, most of the accents are UK (Irish, Scottish, etc). In Star Wars, the British accent was typically relegated to the seat of power (Empire, Galactic Senators, etc.) and American accents to most others. Not a rule but a style. Overall, it could be pared down to a 2 hour movie and still be enjoyable
The Barbican Centre in London also appears looking not much different to how it does in real life.
It is basically just a television series chaps so watch it in that context and it's very impressive. Compare it to a Star Wars film or video movie and it's not. Apart from the two that came after Phantom Menace perhaps!
John.
Hopefully they restock Rogue One 4K here in the U.S. before Andor S2. It’s going for $80+ on eBay right now 😕
Good grief. Maybe you and I should go into business... I'll ship a load out to you and we can split the profits! John.
I agree, tv shows tend to add too much filler. I end up losing interest here and there while watching vs when I watch a film I’m usually very much locked in.
There are always complete filler episodes somewhere within a series. It took me a while to get into Andor but I enjoyed it by the end of it. John.
Once Upon a time i was very keen on Star Wars .... Now not so much ...
We just watched the 4K of The Force Awakens. That one should put you back in the Star Wars fan club. If only they all looked that good.
John.
@@moviecollector5920 I enjoyed Rogue One, felt like 70's star wars , The new ones are not for me at all, I'm in my 50's and grew up with the originals , Loved them , but not this new disney stuff John
@@NiceGuyAidey You'll have to clear your mind and have a proper new look at The Force Awakens. It is the second best Star Wars film as far as I'm concerned.
Got the 3D of rogue one liked it, but not getting the 4K. Maybe someone will get it for me…hint…hint.
I bet that 3D needs some light punched through it Gary because so much of Rogue One is so dark. And you can do the next 35mm sound transfer then maybe you'll get a £50 voucher! John.
I am so glad that Disney released Andor physically - I will not subscribe to Disney+ and if they don't release it to Blu-Ray (as I don't pirate) I will rather not watch something.
I don't pay any streaming web sites either Nic. Can't be bothered with all that faffing around every time I want to watch something. John.
Disney do a good job with supporting physical media, in particular with the quality of the discs. Such as the recent release of Signs on UHD.
@@moviecollector5920in some ways I understand but I don’t want to miss out on something great just because it’s not available on physical but hey to each their own I appreciate both streaming and physical unfortunately India doesn’t support physical releases like I said
@@GringoXalapeno You've made me wonder if any other countries issue the Indian movies on home video disc. I would imagine China or somewhere around that part of the world would be the prime candidates.
@@moviecollector5920 yeah well actually a Chinese seller on eBay sells them on bootleg blu rays and some are official but out of print and probably have Chinese subtitles and no English subtitles with doubts about region locking
About language options in movies I have interesting circumstances my wife is Mexican and doesn’t speak English only knows Spanish thankfully I’m fluent in Spanish so a Spanish dub I can understand and enjoy just fine so when I buy a blu ray I look for options for Spanish whether it’s a sub or dub lol one time I was at a movie theater in Mexico we went to see a Russian movie that was dubbed in English and subtitled in Spanish it was baffling lol
Sounds like you had a right laugh with that Russian film Gringo. I'm fluent in all languages providing it's English.
John.
@ it was a good dub so I didn’t notice right away it was dubbed but when there was a noticeable reference to location and governments of Russia that an American film wouldn’t make and the lip movements weren’t 100 percent accurate I caught on lol my thought was what was the point of an English dub when I’m the only English speaker in that whole theater lol
@@GringoXalapeno It's unusual for modern dubbing to be anything near tolerable because it's usually so awful. Decades ago there was time and skill put into it but today it's usually slapdash. I can therefore understand how a good dub caught you out with that one.
@@moviecollector5920 I got the impression that it was the opposite because usually in the past English dubs for foreign films were usually terrible but hilarious it sure tends to be a so bad it’s good kinda thing
@@moviecollector5920hmm I’ve gotten the impression that it was the opposite that dubbing is better than it used to be I suppose it depends on what film industries you’re talking about
Star Wars is supposed to look dirty, unless you're deep in the inner Empire.
It didn't look like either of these in 1977 Douglas and it doesn't in The Force Awakens either. I think it's just a look that is being applied to Star Wars now to try to make it all look consistent.
John.
@moviecollector5920 I'm half blind, well, not that bad. Even though I've seen all the films, the grime of Tattoine is etched in my childhood memory. Did you like Solo? I felt it was treated unfairly. I liked it.
@@douglasbriel6103 Tatooine always had a poverty to it but it looked good on film. These days a more dowdy look it being applied to Star Wars but only in the interior sequences. That wasn't the case in the original films, nor in The Force Awakens but started to creep in for The Rise of Skywalker. The middle film, The Last Jedi had it but that generally looked like it was shot with sub-standard video equipment rather than film cameras. I need to check that sometime. I liked SOLO. I liked it rather a lot actually but it did suffer from an even more dowdy look for most of it. That may have been to disguise computer effects inadequacies though because there was a lot of computer work in that one.
John.
@moviecollector5920 Companies are obsessed with CGI alteration even when completelu unnecessary. It's even showing in the companies not having time to complete all the work. Other weird shortcuts. They can't film a person standing outside a door, or driving cars without blue/green screen. More portable cameras than ever, and cheaper, and faster, but it's like there's a conspiracy to spend money.
Donnie Yen is The Man.
He certainly was very good in Rogue One. Don't think I've seen him in anything else... yet. John.
@moviecollector5920 He is a colleague of Michelle Yeoh and Jackie Chan. Huge Hong Kong action actor. He was in Hero with Jet Li.
Andor has way better storytelling than any star wars film
Possibly because it's a television/streaming series. John.
Re: Andor -- At some point while you're watching, just about everything shot on 4K starts to look really bad.
I just recorded the Mandalorian/Force Awakens review Jim and since doing that I've started to wonder if there's a lighting stipulation for all Star Wars productions now to only use low, natural light for all interior sequences. That would explain why so many indoor scenes look so lacklustre. Most of the external scenes are very good.
John.
UA-cam keeps deleting my comments lol as far as China producing Blu rays for Indian movies I believe so and Japan as well but unsure if it’s region locked and unsure if it has English subtitles as well as a Chinese seller on eBay selling blu rays that are probably unofficial

sir are you selling any 35mm reels ? 😢

They'll be like hens teeth these days but they are out there. I actually ran a reel of Spider-Man 2 a couple of weeks ago. It is a sensational looking print and the sound is unbelievable. Puts the soundtracks on all the home videos to shame.
John.
@ yeah i’ve seen this, the quality is unmatchable …
please give someone to scan the reel sir at highest quality possible, it’s very rare
@mrx-s7h The home video 4K disc can be made to look excellent. I had to rein in the brightness but that's not uncommon. Get it down to the more muted projection illumination of a film and it's just about there.
@ yeah 35MM 4K scan can be made like i’m saying scan it on 8K or 6K resolution and
then create smaller resolution copies for everyone, you can give someone like he could clean the dust and all , then make it a pristine look.
@mrx-s7h There will always be negative dust printed into the print and that can vary substantially. Seen on a film print it is rarely noticeable but after a transfer to video it's much more obvious. Something about the complete lack of movement with video.
