Top tip to young/new artists: DON'T focus on finding a style. Focus on improving your art, anatomy and colouring, but never think that you have to have a style.
It's not wrong to have 'your own style' but DON'T focus on getting a style! I can't say this enough. Calling something a style, forcing yourself to get better at 'your style' is stressfull and takes the fun out of art

This was a very helpful video ^^ it's definitely hard trying to create your own style. I'm breaking away from the anime style myself, since after years of doing it I just wasn't satisfied with how overly cute and exaggerated my art was. Huge sparkly eyes, small nose and mouth, it wasn't working. So I did the same thing you did. A little bit from there some more from over there, and I thought I had it. Except I didn't. It was never consistent, it was super awkward, my fundamental knowledge was lacking, and it was just awkward and uninteresting to look at. So I began studying anatomy (I know how things work, just not how they look in certain angles lol) and I focused so much on learning all about that, that when I went back to drawing my style did a 180 and was starting to come together. It wasn't overly realistic nor overly exaggerated. The hair and other details were realistic but I kept the eyes and overall look cartoony. I still need to work on my anatomy and foreshortening, but I pretty much have my style, which is the perfect style for my animations I plan on doing ^^ simplistic and cartoony without being full blown cartoon and exaggerated. This video definitely helps ground the idea that a style will occur over time ^^

Just Debbie it's a little difficult to explain ^^' basically, the closer something in, the bigger it is. So if you draw an outreached hand coming toward the viewer, the hand will be extremely large but as the rest of the body is farther away from the viewer they will be smaller.

When I first started trying to draw, it was a picture of two cats standing and kissing. It was cute but simple. Now I try my best to focus on hair, legs, feet, and, of course, hands. After I drew those cats, I looked at pictures of other people's art. I drew each and every one of them pretty well, but they weren't that good. It was fun, and it helped me develop my style. Now I am getting better at my eyes and stuff. I started to draw a random face and drew eyes on it that were pretty similar. My advice is...just try your best...or do what I did and look off of pictures. :P (honestly, it helped, but its not that good advice...DONT LISTEN TO ME AT THE END XD Just do your thing I guess...)

I'm an artist that's extremely lucky to have gone through a VERY short phase of trying to force a style (I wanted it to be more anime, the opposite of you lol!)
But once I stopped forcing what I wanted and just started experimenting with figure drawing and studying art I found that I slowly developed my own style without even realizing it.
And now as I look at my art even from months ago I see I don't hate it and feel good about it even though 2 years ago I looked at art I drew a week ago and hated it

The only thing I meant by "let it develop on its own" is to not force your style if it just isn't working, and that it may take a long time before you're happy with it. When I decided I wanted to start finding my own style (moving away from anime), I tried to mimic other artist's styles (just certain aspects of them - the eyes, lips, colouring, etc) in hopes to teach myself how to draw things differently. My style got really weird. It also didn't help that I wasn't very good with anatomy, and even still I have a lot to learn. I only started to find my style when I relaxed more, and just let myself draw without worrying when my style changes from one drawing to the next. As a beginner, this has really been helping me begin to develop my own style, and I hope it continues to change in the future! I definitely want to make another video, as a sequel to this one, offering more suggestions on how to find your style.
      (sorry for writing so much!)

Ah, I see what you mean. Usually when I hear the "let it develop on it's own", I get the idea of never seeing style ever and simply stick to anatomy studies or whatever. I know some people (including myself) who would stick to studying anatomy for years, only to find out that they still can't design.
I threw myself onto that situation, however, now that I'm exploring other styles, the journey has became a lot more easier to understand.

I think it's a mix of both points. I think finding your style is a good place to start and finding how you like to draw and what you like to draw is important, but I think you should a, never limit yourself to only drawing that style because you can't advance and find new things you like and b. you should allow you art style to evolve and advance.

This is an oxymoron. Studying peoples work is part of that journey...When you study Anatomy you observe from life, photos, and other peoples work (aka master studies).
Maybe your not learning Anatomy correctly.

This video was super helpful to me in several ways..I thought I HAD to find my art style, and it turns out I already had one LOL
Not only did what you were saying help me,but watching you draw was also helpful..I realize now that my drawing doesn't have to look like the people I watch on UA-cam,but it is helpful to me to watch others draw because I get inspiration for my own art..I used to find myself wishing I could draw as well as you guys I watch on here, but now I know I will only get better if I practice and all of you wonderful people who put out videos on here weren't automatically good, you had to practice to improve and to get where you are in your skill level 😊

I really try to draw anime when I was 12 but it just looks like a Disney character or cartoony.. I don't know why drawing anime is so hard for me though... I thought it would be easier cause it looked much simpler than realistic art but it's just so hard for me..maybe because I have a big ocd on the face xD, cause most of the anime character have V faces.. it's really weird for me cause I grew up watching Japanese anime not western anime lol.

You’re the first lefty I came across when researching different styles of drawing. I like that dirty stray line style of drawing, if that makes sense. I used to get so much flack for being left handed.. in truth there is no real difference in which hand you draw with. Thanks!

Thank you so much! I have been trying to find my own way of art. And I have been watching alot of different art styles..I was getting more anxious and desperate. While watching this video I took notes on Your tips which really helped me alot i also saw that I really liked this type of art style (the one that was to the left of the words styles) I tried to copy it and it turned out pretty well then while drawing I tried to change up some features to make it look diffrent! It was so much fun to see how creative my mind could be! Of course it was not perfect but it was pretty good..I will keep practicing and thank you so much for helping me find my art style

This helps a lot, thanks!!! I am SUPER impatient and wanted to get a style. I was changing things about it too quickly and I hate it. Thank you so much!!! I’m getting influenced by other amazing animators and I just want to draw things that people would like, and I’m scared people will judge it. I have been watching certain animators create these amazing animatics and all I want is to do the same. I’m rushing it. Thank you for creating this video to help me and probably a bunch more people find out what they’re supposed to do!

I actually don't like having an art stile.
I think it just limits you as an artist.
I also don't like anime stiles. I think they are mostly uncreative and usually lack emotion ( I'm talking about the boring anime "Kawaii" girls with the "happy" face. Drawn the same, but with different hairstyles and accessories.)
An art stile is supposed to come naturally without forcing it. You should use some features of other artists you like and combine them in a balanced and nice way. Obviously, without directly copying them.

i like the semi-realistic and also almost realistic style too (if thats what you would call it) ive been drawing for years--since i was literally little--and with the recent trends in art, cartoon shows, animes... and basically whatever is popular atm, ive found myself stuck. This helped me realized what i should do in the market; for someone who is trying to make money from my talent. From artist to artist thank you. Thank you so much this honestly was a big relief to me. Two of my best friends and I are all aspiring artists and they both already have distinct drawing styles, like if you were to show me even a fragment of anyone one of there sketches I would IMMEDIATELY know who drew it, meanwhile I didn’t exactly have my own style rather I was replicating other styles. And seeing as I’m about to art attending an art academy but still didn’t have my own style, I can honestly say that I was borderline panicking😅... so yeah this really helped😁

I guess my style kind of evolved starting with the nose. I found myself drawing in a cartoon anime style when I made it. I'm trying to work on the eyes. Some things like the way I draw hair are totally different. I think when you let your art kinda lead you, it really helps influence your style. I hope this inspired someone to find their own style. I've found that it helps if you try to just think about what you like about other styles, and maybe trying to slowly mix these elements into your own work. Like, maybe you really like the way someone draws eyes: try asking yourself why you like their eyes, and try incorporating the thing you like into your own drawing (not saying you should duplicate someone else, but try taking those small elements that you like)
