The effects felt are the result of combination of Rumi's mysticism, a universal love poem and two other masters of Tanbour and classical Iranian singing by Shajarian (JR) singing in Persian, a language that has been fine tuned over many centuries for poetry. In this poem, Rumi is praying to his God and singing these words to God; but like some of other Rumi poems the poem has multiple meanings and the same poem can be sung by a person in love with another human being. The Persian language is a very old & powerful Indo-European (more precisely Indo-Germanic) language. If you want to know how powerful and flexible it is, just know that if someone from 15 centuries ago who spoke Persian gets on a time machine and arrives at our doorstep the 1500 year old person and the 21st century person can easily converse understanding each other (except for borrowed words like Computer...). I would say Persian language is not the best language as it is now for more technical conversion requiring precision like how it can be done with German and lesser extent English. If the Persian language had not been diluted by the Moslem invasion (7th century AD) it too would have continued its natural course like German, perhaps even better fine tuned for scientific discussions. Today's Persian speakers would have to reverse many changes to get back on their original path and there are academics that say it may be doable over 3-4 generations if everyone is willing and Persian school teachings are modified . Rumi created an excellent literary work and it is a contribution and gift to mankind as its words knows no boundaries and its connotative meanings may be understood by all (with some studying and explanations). No wonder Madonna loves Rumi, like millions of other people across the planet. Rumi lived in 1207-1273 AD. Buy a copy of his books and take a course or two in Persian and you will be amazed at what you discover from within your soul. There are many other famous Iranian poets lesser known in the West. Like Ferdousi who wrote the longest poem of mankind call Shahnameh (Book of Kings), it is approximately 60,000 verses and it is basically considered as the Iranian people's Saga, like the Norse Saga. Shahnameh is the story of the Iranian people from mythical times (probably 6000-9000 ears ago) to approximately 900AD.
You should listen to his father, Mohammad Reza Shajarian! I first heard him while delving into the kamancheh years ago, his collaborations with Hossein Alizadeh and Mohammad Reza Lotfi (to name a few) are stunning!!!

Translating Persian poetry into English is notoriously difficult so don't expect to get inundated on that front! I am a bilingual Persian-English and an engineer. For engineering text English is perfect and Farsi lacks so much. For expressing emotions, love, beauty, the conjurings of the narcotic that is life itself, Farsi (Persian) is just something else. I can think thoughts in Farsi that I cannot even fathom in English.

Hi my daughter, Iranian classical music follows certain rules and regulations. The most important of these rules is that the music should be composed and arranged so that the singer can perform the poem he has chosen to sing in the most beautiful way possible and the listeners can accompany the poem with music. Fully understand. In fact, music and poetry are complementary. When the audience leaves the hall, they whisper the poem. Usually, the poems are chosen by the singer from very famous poets in Iran and the world, such as Hafez Shirazi, Saadi Shirazi, Sayeh, Khayyam, Rumi, etc. Yes, my dear daughter, if the language is Persian. You realized that you enjoyed music much more and better.

I am astonished! You are very well-informed about Iranian culture. Very few realize that those literal translations scripted in the subtitle are not even scratching the surface of these DEEP lyrics. Many Iranians don't understand the meaning of these verses either and each will take away his/her perception of it.
You know Tanbur, you know Rumi and the fact that his poem is multilayer deep! It is amazing! Iran's greatest treasure is its poetry, unfortunately, many never get access to this treasure in their life. The essence of life and its meaning is hidden deep in those treasures. Rumi is only one of the hundreds but no doubt one of the greatest poets in Persian literature.

Here is my 2 cents about this poem:
This is not about earthly love, it is about one being completely dissolved in the source of all love. Many call it God. It takes years of studying Persian mysticism to understand these poems. Yet many common people just enjoy the beautiful verses which are undescribable when recited in Persian.
These verses are heavenly and a native Persian speaker will be mesmerized by the beauty of the words themselves. When one desires to get close to the source of everything s/he must first get rid of his/her selfish desires and purify himself/herself to receive his (its) grace and here the poet (Rumi) is explaining the journey of how he breaks away from himself and all earthly things to become worthy of his (God's) attention. When he says "he broke his pen and left his friends"; he is referring to his fame, knowledge, and status -- which can bring about arrogance and narcissism -- as a top and famous scholar of his time, not family and friends in the sense that we understand it. He says every earthly thing will be a veil between one and God and one must get rid of them if s/he wants to enjoy the companionship of God. Wealth, fame, and knowledge will cause arrogance that will prevent one from connecting to his/her lover (God here). It is rather hard for Westerners -- who are immersed in a culture with prevalent individualism -- to make a connection with these heavenly words; but in many cultures there are many things more important than a person's material possessions and desires and his/her own life, it can be better understood.
As it is said "lost in translation"; it is very difficult to convey the essence of these words in another language, a lot of its beauty will be lost; YET one can learn from it if s/he thinks deeply. Studying Persian (Farsi) and you will earn a key to a garden full of wisdom, deep meanings, and love and if you are lucky you might get to real happiness and satisfaction: the Persian language is only the first step -- many Iranians will never benefit from these treasures; thanks to consumerism culture that have confused people and selling them fake, hollow happiness. I WANT MORE AND MORE AND MORE: I WANT 20 ROOMS in MY HOUSE and one property in each city around the world; I have not time to think about the meaning of life!! Rumi's treasure of wisdom will never reach these people's ears let alone their hearts and mind.

Homayoun Shajarian, the son of Mohammad Reza Shajarian, is a master of original Iranian singing. His voice is one of the 50 most enduring voices in the world. tahrir is a style in Iranian music that comes out of the throat by combining the sound of the flash and the main sound at the same time.
Keep in mind that Rumi's poetry is often a conversation between him and God, not some lover/girl etc.

In the West, the rman does not sing, but only almost talks, but in the Middle East it is the heart and all the emotions and senses when you sing.

Wow ❤️🔥 You are absolutely right about translation, Persian poetry is very deep, start with the prophet Zarathushtra/ Zoroaster( in Greek) in his book named Gatha( means song or poet) in around 4000 years ago! For example Rumi, Hafez, Omar Khayam… and mostly in the Shahname by Ferdosi we have a word called “Kherad” and if you want to translate would be the combination of all those concepts “Love, intellect, intelligent, emotional intelligence, consciousness and unconsciousness, responsibilities, morals, science, truth all together) probably the closest world in English will be Wisdom or something like that as we don’t have exact word ✨❤️✨Kherad be with you✨🙏✨

very nice of you and really great, to understand these lyrics, you need to look for Rumi and other Sufi masters. these are pretty deep issues, and I was actually glad that you figured out something about this beyond the musical composition, heard some reactions, but yours was the best and deeper than some.

The poem is about the love of God and the Creator, and its meaning in brief is that by understanding the greatness and beauty of God, you become unconscious (like getting drunk) and forget the world.
This is the crystallization of thousand years of the Persian culture.

Hi, thanks for reacting the music, lyrics are from old Iranian famous poet "Rumi" it is hard even to translate to today farsi language it is mostly talking about spiritual love sometime they used to talk about normal love as an example however it is mostly talking about love in general and higher level, "Tahrir" that you mentioned is a technique to sing but also is one of the way for writting poem...etc when we talk about poems it has some different arts inside ...one is handwritting techniques one is decorating poem pages and books with paiting techniques....one is miniature painting and very thing layers of gold the whole decoration peocess is called "Tazhib" and finaly reading and singing is another art in poems....

This poem is about divine love. Rumi -- mystic --- is describing the stages of his purification until he becomes worthy of the source of all love (in his view God).
Rumi -- Molana Jalal-al-Din Balkhi (Rumi) -- was a renowned scholar of his time. Having everything one seeks in earthy life, yet he was not satisfied and sought the truth. He then became acquainted with a Sufi called -- Shams Tabrizi -- who taught him to drop fame, praise of others, and materialistic life and purify himself.
When you hear "I was like Mercury sitting in circles to gain more knowledge and then he says that he realized knowledge alone can not guide him to his beloved, hence he broke his pen". This refers to knowledge that might bring about pride, arrogance, and narcissism which is a veil in front of one's eye to not see the divine. It is very difficult to translate these poems into another language; they sound so good and have deep meaning in Persian. The English Subtitle is an honest attempt but it is more like a literal translation which does not convey the deep meaning of this poem but the translator could not write a long paragraph under every word that the singer sings 🙂.

this poetry is full of Literary techniques and methods ! (Talmih, Vaj Ara'e, E'ham , etc.)
The text has a double meaning, which depends on the interpretation of the reader. It can be about the earthly love between two individuals or about the love between a person and his God or Creator. When one reads "O beloved, take my hand," it can be about a human lover or the beloved creator/God. In Persian Sufi poetry, "Yar," meaning companion or beloved, can have a double meaning.
The Persian poet philosophers weaved paradigms into mysterious rhymes. To understand the meaning is the beginning of understanding the self.

In our literature love has a deeper meaning than that of English. It is like the relationship between a patient ( lover) and his or her devoted physician ( beloved) whose mission is just to save his or her the only patient. Love and separation is like a disease that could never be treated but just by joining the two sides. And there are always a lot of obstacles against this joining which are not easy to be removed.
If you know the meanings of the words, you will be much, much more absorbed

That instrument is called setar.
I asked my Iranian friend to explain the subtitles a little bit and he said I rather understand it as a whole concept, but not the lyrics. It seems like there's so much history in it that doesn't make sense in the modern era.

Briefly Rumi explains about the wine of love to God and its intoxication. He says I got drunken after drinking it and I was freed of everything but God as if I was freed of myself completely too.
This poem is so mystical and spritual and explains about ultimate destination and goal of Islamic mysticism.
