  • In this video I show you how to replace a driveshaft on a Dapol Class 121, it's a simple technique requiring patience, but no skills. All in it costs 4 quid for the driveshaft, and needs no special tools.
I'm happy to get this up and running again, it's my first ever loco and my second favourite and she is key for the branch line, so she has plenty of work to do!
As it turns out this is a very common problem and I hope further iterations of this model will have the driveshaft mechanism fixed, in two ways, one the driveshafts will be splined and the knobs at the end more securely positioned and also the driveshaft not being located in such a way that a soldering iron is potentially going to be required. Other locos have much easier configurations to allow access.
Apologies for the number of times I say shaft and bogie in this video, Happy Easter!
All of my other locos and goodies I have bought are also on my website, please take a look if you would like further inspiration, it also helps me to fund my video development and my website hosting (with no effect on you at all). Next thing I want to buy is a microphone and maybe some better lights.

Yeah I agree, it is tricky, lovely little loco, shame, as it seems to be quite a common problem. I like your idea, if I had a greater skill set I would have done the same!!! Cheers Tony!

Hi Gareth, yes I did contemplate doing the same, it’s a really poor design to not have a splined end or a one piece unit. Shame, because I really like the loco. I still have a spare drive shaft as I’m fairly confident I will be doing it again soon….

Yeah agreed, it’s a shame because I like the metal, but the two part system the way it is done is just not fit for purpose. And then when you have to change them, or fix them as you have you have to be Houdini!!! Come on Dapol, I know you’re better than this.
