I think dwarves can fit into a smaller hole than most medium sized and larger enemies can fit into, so if you engineer (lol) a very narrow tunnel with line of sight to the corestone, that should be viable for any class. Still have to run out to break the core, but it's something.
Did some additional science based on this comment! The dead trees in REZ work, so do the glow trees from fungus bogs, as well as jumping up and down on a mushroom (mushroom). All of these break bug pathfinding which makes them crawler proof, so if you have one of them nearby you can use that exploit too lol.
Yeah the glow tree count as safe spot, no bug can crawl on it, and they are hard to destroy unlike dead trees. Now that I tkink about it, elevator trees in dense biozone might work too.
Not sure about elevator plants as I haven't tested those yet, but brood nexii are another one that work excellently. Another reason to leave them alive :)
Sad to see the shield exploit gone in a way, but just grabbing onto a zipline while the crawlers hop around unable to reach you works well still (just not on true solo, since you'll have to break the core-pillar somehow)
i haven't actually done a core stone in ages, but i think there's a possibility this behavior changed with one of the patches? so definitely needs some more testing first, and i'm not sure if that specific part of the footage still holds up sorry!

Did you use the pickaxe and go at the proper downwards slope? You need to carve out a tunnel that just barely lets you pass, and this requires a certain downward angle and can NOT be made with drillhands. Also it doesn't work on dense biozone (forgot to say that in the original description), so that might be it. The important thing about magic tunnel tech is that you need ONE terrain break per "forward" direction. In the game norrmally, if you try and dig a flat tunnel straight into a wall, you'll need to break open two bits of terrain to take a step forward - e.g. at your face and at your feet. The beauty of magic tunnels is that instead you are carving along a diagonal (up or down), say 45 degrees up or down, and this sidesteps the need for having double terrain breaks. This is the real secret here, because this magic angle abuses the grid-based voxel system underneath everything and has the tremendous side effect of breaking bug pathfinding. Just note that the tunnel needs to be long enough and if you're too close to the entrance you absolutely can get hit. A properly working magic tunnel will not let grunts in, so you can try building them in any map (not just against crawlers) to practice the technique in like haz2 or whatever. Just note that swarmers can get in, and so can mactera, but mactera usually won't be able to shoot because their line of sight checks end up going into the floor and they never* fire. *never = usually never. There are some angles where a mackie can get a shot off sometimes.
For general use - they're more practical on harder terrain, because you're saving more hits per bit of tunnel (2 hit terrain only saves you 2 hits per forward movement, versus 3 hit terrain saving a full 3). But it's definitely more annoying to construct in a biome like that. The problem isn't the number of hits but the terrain carve, and that's only an issue in one biome - dense biozone. Dense biozone's carve amount makes it technically impossible to magic tunnel with the usual strats just by pickaxing, as it blows open too wide of a path regardless of angle. There is a strat that works for corestones however, as you can still construct an impassable magic tunnel-lite using a resupply placed in the proper spot. Basically: pretend you're building a magic tunnel and then drop a resup kinda off the side at the end of it. Continue digging out space beyond it to stand in, as enemies won't be able to squeeze past the resup's hitbox to get to you. I think if you drop a resup close to the initial entrance at the wall you're digging into it'll likely work the best in terms of giving you an angle to shoot the core stone, but it's definitely more restrictive than other biomes, all of which let you magic tunnel without having to spend nitra.
restriction breeds creativity! these exploits were forged in the fires of the greenbeard 6x2 challenge which required weaponization of obscure mechanics to succeed lol. it just so happens that the things i learned in those ended up being applicable to many more things, like this.
