It started when I watched Australia in the 1974 world cup on TV as an 11 year old. I was there against Scotland in 1985 and against Argentina in 1993 and against Iran in 1997 (that one hurt a lot!), and against Uruguay in 2001 and Finally was there to see us beat Uruguay in 2005 in the most tense and exhilarating game I've ever been to. I also snuck into the after match function with the player! I was also lucky enough to go to Germany for the 2006 World cup and see all the Australian games.Sport has never been the same since as nothing ever lives up to these experiences as I have been to the mountain top. I Cry every time I watch this video. I have truly been blessed.
I couldn’t speak for three days after this happened because I was roaring at my TV Australia finally made it to a FIFA World Cup the greatest event on earth.I remember watching the game against Iran when I was 11 years old I remember Australia’s second goal with a young Harry Kewell but then Peter Hoare a man with a track record interrupting sports events tore the net down during the second half and Iran got together and drew the match to get to the World Cup in 1998 and left the great Johnny Warren in tears I was sad after that Iran game
I keep watching this game over and over and i watched it on tv in england with 20 aussies mad fans, i watched them going ballistic when aloisi scored the winning penalty, i never experienced that feeling since!
Thanks for putting this up, I missed it on Fox Sports. I was at the game that night, it was just an incredible feeling. And this video brought it all back.
Really great vid. Brought back a lot of memories. There were a few points I feel could have been brought up to make it more special. #1- the streaker for Iran1997, #2- John Safran's breaking the curse, and #3- the commentator's screaming "JOHNNNNYYY WARRENNNN" after Aloisi's penalty. I was going to add #4- Vidmar's tears, but they brought that in right at the end. So to one end or another, I really enjoyed this and I think I feel like I did that day we finally qualified for Germany 06.
I would add on #3, from an outsiders perspective (American), that the Aussies had an extra two men that night: 1) the Crowd in Sydney 2) Warren, who passed away the previous year. Also, as you mentioned the 97 heartbreak v Iran, up 2-0 until the 72nd minute when all hell broke loose and the Iranians ripped the Aussie hearts out and its the Iranians that go to France for the WC. Also, four years earlier (2001), winning that 1st leg 1-0 at home, not closing that deal needing just one goal in Montevideo to advance, they get waxed 3-0 and the Uruguayans go to Japan/Korea for the WC and the Aussies go home. I would also say 93 v Argentina led by the late great Diego Maradona (RIP). I have to think in that 2 game playoff, especially that 2nd leg in Buenos Aires, it was clear that Maradona and Co, having been to the finals in 86 (winning the title in Mexico City v West Germany), and 90 (losing in the final in Rome to that same West Germany) were not going to be denied. Also, that 1st playoff v Canada maybe took a lot out of them in that 2nd playoff v Argentina. (Who could have forse The thing that stuck out to me watching this documentary, was the difference in 2005 that the other three trips to the door of the World Cup, was the Hiddink instilling Mental toughness. That team was not to be denied in 2005, especially v Uruguay, the team that knocked them out 4 years earlier in Montevideo.
Being a life long football fan and former amateur player (of very modest ability), I shall never forget Wednesday 16th November 2005, as I went to the Olympic stadiums, and what an epic match of football. The atmosphere in the stadium was incredible, I arrived there at 6.40pm, eighty minutes before kick off, and the crowd was already singing and chanting.
I gotta ask this of you, from an outsiders perspective (American): People talk Cathy Freeman five years earlier in that stadium for the Olympics and how that atmosphere was that night. Would you say that night in 2005 rivals what Cathy Freeman did five years earlier in that stadium in terms of the atmosphere and anticipation?
@@dannyboy34677 Sorry for the late reply, as wonderful what Cathy Freeman achieved, nothing will compare to the atmosphere at the Australia v Uruguay game.
So many emotions running through me right now, having watched this again. Tony Vidmar his reflections awakened my imagining eye, it was so clear through his lens, what a beautiful story. The piece of this I remember so vividly was the Australian legend, the most gifted of all Harry Kewell and his penalty. His actions, that penalty was as sweetly hit, under pressure as was possible. The measure of quality technique under stress. Harry without injuries, what a lift he would have been to Australian football. At present he is in the same discussions as Viduka, Cahill as our greatest. Timmy second a big space to third, and in technique and skill set, Harry was same distant first in my opinion. Paul Okon a gifted player as well. So this doco is so emotive I had tears at different times once again. I love the Socceroos, and have just sat through the same emotional torment once again in Russia. Next time- please develop youngsters with speed, size, technique the skill set required to not panic in front of goal to have the built in instinct to know through sixth sense, experience of where the ball will go, or it's most likely position. Please develop Goal scorers, it is what is important, al the World Cup favourites have their world class forwards. We need this as part of our development. Cheers and Go Socceroos.
The Monday (1 December 1997) after the Iran match in Melbourne (29 November), I lined up at Centrelink Parramatta to put in my Austudy forms. While I was standing there, an unkempt man, like a whirlwind walks quickly past all of us, walking furiously to the front of the queue. I said, unbelievingly to the guy next to me, "That's that serial pest who brought down the goal posts on Saturday night." He replied, "I think you're right. That's Peter Hoare!"
I did not know that the Uruguayan player ALBARO RECOBA was conceited in that poop repechage in SOUTH AMERICA, he was not known that defect, fortunately AUSTRALIA kept his mouth shut, this video is a story of EXCEPTION AND RESILIENCE, IT DOESN'T MATTER HOW MANY TIMES IT FALLS IF YOU FIGHT EVERYTHING THE TIME AND YOU HAVE FAITH YOU CAN ACHIEVE THE GOAL, THE UNEXPENSABLE
That 1st Uruguayan game at the airport was a total disgrace, we know now it was organised bye the URGAY fa , but the best response was 2005 , fitter better and super motivated team under saint GUS put the record stray
Two words: Mental Toughness. That's what the Aussies had in 2005, which they didn't have four years earlier in that 2nd leg in Montevideo where the Uruguayans spanked the Aussies 3-0, with the Aussies needing just one away goal to advance to Japan/Korea, they couldn't get it done. After seeing this, Redemption is the word for the Aussies that night and got payback for four years earlier.
The Late Mike Cockerill was not only a great journalist, and someone who loved football, but he was a gentleman and a thoroughly decent human being. I met him once back in August 2012, and found him to be the most polite, down to Earth person you could ever hope to meet. I religiously used to read his well written articles on Football in the Sydney Morning Herald. R.I.P Mike Cockerill, and thank you for your services to football in Australia.
I ran down the street like a madman, yelling after Aloisi scored the pen. This brings back goosebumps.

To all the legends that didn't make that game if not for you we wouldn't have made that game.

this still make me cry wow i was like 12 years old at this time
I am from Argentina and in 1993 we were very very lucky to beat Australia. Very lucky deflection goal
The late Diego Maradona was on that Argentine team in his final World Cup.
The one dislike on this video was a Uruguay fan
Nothing touches you like The World Game of FOOTBALL !.
What a thoroughly uplifting and brilliant documentary. Pass me the Castlemaine. Get 'Waltzing Matilda' on the stereo.
I'm English, but I was almost in tears at the end of this. Amazing film.
Superb effort. Thanks
Very interesting Australia have a good soccer team

Can you please upload this in higher quality like 1080p or even 720p Thanks!
i still think john travolta rocking up to the change room was the most random thing about it.
....1997.........gut wrenching.
What do you guys have against the 1965 Australian team why do guys forget about them? They were the first Australian team not the 1970's one.
The 1974 blokes were the first Australian team to qualify for a World Cup.
Australia's first WC was in West Germany, and they finally made it again when Germany hosted the world cup... _again._
En ese partido Uruguay no pudo jugar Forlán lesionado y jugo el muerto de Recoba q nunca gano nada con la selección.
