This place was one of the places to be when it first opened. I remember going there in Elementary school when it first opened in 1999. Even in middle and Highschool, we used to go after class to hang there when we caught the train. Sunset was still thriving a decade ago. I remember going there a lot to shop at Hollister my first time in College. It started to die pre-pandemic and then the pandemic officially killed it for good. I remember when the Disney store left I was shocked. It was always busy. Outdated floor plans, paying for parking, very high rent killed this mall.
The place opened way before 1999. It was called The Bakery Center and it opened sometime in the mid 1980s. Maybe Google the bakery center/ south Miami.
I didn’t know we had a Barnes and Noble there. The last one I went to was in Coral Gables somewhere and the nearest AMC theater I know is at Aventura mall
With Sunset Place closing, it’s one less spot in Miami to grab a quick drink and stay hydrated! Miami heat doesn’t care if the malls are open or closed. Locals know that staying hydrated is essential, especially with fewer spots to cool down and recharge. Here’s hoping whatever replaces it keeps Miami’s hydration needs in mind-maybe more outdoor water stations or shaded areas where people can chill and hydrate in the heat.
Thank you so much Joel for consistently keeping us informed! Sounds like they are building yet another 15 minute city. I chuckle because the UK still has hands on us.
Yet another? We're wellllll behind what we need. By all means there will still be the option to take a 20 - 30 minute journey for so much as a cup of sugar, in a carriage that costs tens of thousands, and on roads we can't even afford to maintain, but having other options would be awesome. We act like our hands are tied on housing and the cost of living but here they are taking a single mall and building an entire neighborhood for thousands. More housing and less requirement for a car amounts to a lower cost of living and more time to, you know, live rather than have long commutes to even basic needs.
@thzene4967 Bill Gates plans to create 15-minute cities in cities like Tampa, FL. You are correct in that we are behind in our housing needs. More housing means more inventory, which will push prices down, hopefully. 🤞 It amazes me how many "luxury" apartments have been built along the metro rail system in Miami down south. As well as by west kendall in the west kendall baptist hospital area. This shows, anyone who has a home with land will be more valuable than an apartment or condo because this type of residency is scarce, especially with a good size lot. Just watching with my popcorn waiting to see how everything unfolds.
I love the plans to update the mall. I had many memories going to this mall as a child. There would be rock climbing, face painting, and slushees when I was a wee lad. And yes that structure in the back, next to where LA Fitness is, used to be a beautiful Nike store. I’d compare it to how Aventuras Nike store is set up. It was before its time for sure and was my favorite mall to go as I grew older. Can’t wait to have it all fixed up so more memories can be made.
This is unbelievable, this place used to be THE place to be in the early to mid 00s. I have since moved from Miami around 2012. I remember going to the movies with my family, and having birthday parties at I think it was called Game Zone? My mom used to go to the Barnes and Nobels. What is shocking to me is how Dadeland Mall exploded just down the street. I went back to Miami in 2018 and saw this place explode. I remember thinking Dadeland was super dead. At that time it was just JCPenny's and Sears. This really goes to show you, that things change man. Real childhood memories at this place, sad to see this place go!
I remember when sunset place opened in 1999. I was a teenager. Loved the Virgin Megastore, Niketown and the movies. Can’t believe it’s been this long. 25 yrs
I was in High School at the time and in January 1999, I saw it for the first time and wow! It felt like a new way of shopping and dining. I really miss Virgin Megastore, FAO Schwarz, Niketown, Disney Store, Gameworks and Wilderness Grill. I am not sure what will happen to AMC Sunset Place 24 and now Gametime where it will go.
Kudos! Although its sad to see these 90's era Horton Plaza knockoffs demo'd, most of our malls here in Edmonton are similarly in the planning stages to be replaced by mixed use complexes like the one proposed for Sunset Place... Bonnie Doon and Mill Woods malls are thankfully the first to be redeveloped since they are on a new tram line which although it was 3 years late opening, is now a hit with commuters... Malls in the current form probably would have survived had they residential, office and hotel space been built into them as envisioned by the father of the mall movement, Victor Gruen.. Guess better late than ever!
Ironic that they’re keeping what killed traffic to that mall - a pay to park parking garage. Seems like the new development will be competing with the remodeled Cocowalk in terms of vibe. Sunset Place was doomed with paid parking - why pay to park there when you could go to Dadeland and park for free?
On second thought, wouldn't it be cool to convert the Sunset place into a giant paintball course? Like leave the buildings there as is. Gut the businesses and convert the entire facility into a cool paintball map.
This place was the only place that I went to for Open Mic at Tea and Poets!! Sadly I don’t know what will happen to Tea and Poets after this demolition. But my only hope is that this place will bring those that live in Miami immense success.
Damn, I worked right around the corner back in the mid 1980s when it was known as The Bakery Center, it was having problems even back then. Hopefully the new developers will turn it around.
I haven't been down that way in many years, but I remember it being nice, very walkable. I lived in the north part of town back then and rode MetroRail to work.@@thedirtybubble9613
How were you able to take video? I went last night and security stopped me from taking a photo with my phone, saying management doesn’t allow photos/videos of the property.
Okay, this is a terrible looking project. I saw 30 story towers and designs that do not complement South Miami's past or present. Not only is South Miami not zoned for high density projects, but the area is already overburdened with overcrowding issues. If they want to build something here, at least do it right so we don't have to be stuck with the same crap for the next 30 years. Do something right. Like perhaps an IMAX movie theater that was once there or even a food court with different options? How about a Gold's Gym? We don't need apartments and an "amphitheater" in an area that is already clogged with traffic. The area is not dead, it just needs improvements and this is not it.
@@JoeHusosky Yes, I worked around the corner on Madruga Ave, in the Gables. I remember hanging out at The Bakery Center during lunch hour and eating at Marshall Majors and Beverly Hills Cafe. That's how far back I go! 😂
Traffic in the downtown South Miami area is bad now. Three major streets, U.S. 1, Red Road, and Sunset drive form a triangle around this development. They are all through streets with many vehicles using them to pass through South Miami on their way to somewhere else. With the development on the Winn-Dixie property and this, and the added traffic they will bring, there is likely to be frequent gridlock.
Why not leave sunset place and develop the surrounding areas with residential? Seems wasteful to destroy such a new development for something newer. That’s not sustainable building.
Kinda sad. The design of this place was never terrible, it’s the paid parking. The Falls isn’t a ghost town & it’s been around since forever. I personally hate that more tall apartments are being built further down south. The beauty of the area is that it’s not like down town but I get it.
I personally like tall buildings. If the population keeps growing you'll either need to build upward or outward. In some ways it's a lose lose situation, but I'd certainly rather see the upward development.
@@thedirtybubble9613interesting. I've never lived in areas with tall buildings so I kind of just think they're all pretty cool, although that could just be because I haven't had experience with the bad ones

They should have made this site the Hurricanes Football Stadium!!
That would have been great, Go Canes!!!
The OB should have never been demolished. That was a tragic day when they tore it down.
It's Vancouverism style of urban planning.
It's still the bakery center to me😉
Hi
Was it Holsum Bakery that was originally on the site?

This will be the 2nd time the garage gets saved. Before it was called the bakery center all was torn down but the garage was saved.
You are doing great, thank you so much for giving us such wonderful videos.
So basically, they’re building a high-rise in that area. We have enough of those in Sunny Isles beach.
So many beautiful memories I'll cherish forever💔 😢

The space inside Spirit Halloween used to be a Virgin Records
Yep. I remember I bought a CD in that Virgin Records circa 2000.
That brought some memories, used to go to a club there that was called Parallel Bars, it was called Bakery Center before Sunset Place.
i grew up going to Gameworks and that will always be my local AMC. I will miss you Sunset Place

Thanks for sharing.
The biggest mistake in miami demolished the bread factory
Finally some plans that have been approved to demolish this place.
I brought books for my nephew here back in 2019

Hopefully the developers don’t make it a soulless corporate town like Hudson yards. The designs do look very cool and futuristic.
DRT, a huge Porsche event, is usually hosted there so now I'm wondering where it will be held next.
How were you able to take video? I went last night and security stopped me from taking a photo with my phone, saying management doesn’t allow photos/videos of the property.
There goes my favorite LA Fitness in Miami...
That place looks familiar. I've seen it in Battlefield Hardline single player 😄
Do you know if BN will be moving? Or permanently close? Thanks in advance. So sad to see it go.😢
You're brave to go in an elevator in a place with little to nobody around
Mixed use housing? Sounds good to me
I don’t understand why it lost its luster. It was a nice place to go

Could have sworn it was open earlier, probably was just the AMC, parking garage and limited stores.
It was called The Bakery Center in the 1980s.
I think there was a Wholesome Bread factory there originally??? Someone will know.
