The Goat Island Skiff is similar to this boat. I built one. It's very light weight - 15ft and 75kg/165lb. And it has a total of 2 permanent screws in it, the rest is held together by epoxy! One point about scarf joins, you don't really need a jig. Just lay the boards like a set of stairs on top of each other, mark you line, and plane (power plane initially speeds up the process) down to a smooth straight slope. Flip every second board over to glue them together.

We built a rowing boat in our woodworking class when I was at school (1970's). Trouble was the teacher hadn't planned it properly and built it too big to get it out of the workshop. As far as I know it's still there.

I used to do a lot of shipwright work in addition to my normal marine maintenance business. One of the last jobs I did before retiring was to build a 25 foot long A frame for the front of a gold Coast Yacht that had been damaged. It was built of Clear Douglas Fir which came in 12 foot lengths of 2 x 12. The A frame was 5 layers thick and thus a lot of staggered standard 12 to 1 scarf joints (18 inch long). I did this with a jig similar to yours and using a 10" skill saw cutting from both sides and hand sawing the middle out and a little planing. What fun. The a frame had glass at all the joints and 6 layers of tri ply glass top and bottom of the apex. It had to hold 60K pounds of tension. All went well and the Coast Guard inspections were 100%. Not something I wish to repeat.

Nice "Drift Boat" progress. A drift Boat is a boat that has a lot of rocker ( like a rocking chair shape) that with little effort rowing you can hold your boat in a fast moving stream so people can fish while you maintain position. I have had aluminium and wood boats but wood boats aren't as noisy as metal boats and noise can spook the fish. Great work and fixing problems. I was waiting for your second installment. Keep up the excellent work and get this puppy finished!

Jason, love everything about your videos! This boat build reminds of your lofty tank build. You take on intimidating projects and truly crush them all. I’ve been following you for some time now on my personal account but am now switching over to my channel account. So you get 2 subs for the price of one. Because of you and others like you I have started woodworking myself. It’s my new passion. Right now I’m building a king size bed for me and the mrs. I used your bed build as a guide for the structure but put my own spin on it. Thanks so much for the great production value you bring to the woodworking niche. You could do that bottom section by yourself using laminate application methods - of course, with laminate, the glue is dry - so it could get a bit messy. But, apply the glue. Lay small dowel rods across the frame every couple feet to support the panel above the glue. Start at one end, removing rods - touching up glue - and securing panel - as you go ...

As your not a wimp in thinking beyond the designer you really should add a small keel. Our good buddy the Lou the Tips From a Shipwright found out quite some time ago the absolute need for one. Even a rowing dinghy needs one. 1.5" tall front to 2" tall at the stern by 1.5" thick will do it nicely.
Drifting is fun in a car. Lousy in a boat.

Entertaining and enjoyable. You certainly can make a boatbuilding series a boatload of fun.

Nice job but I'm surprised you used white ash. It is great for furniture and fittings, will bend easily is strong and shock resistant but is not durable at all. As long as you glass it all in you should be fine but ash and water do not mix well. You can almost watch it rot away in front of you. The open grain and tubular cells make it soak up water like a sponge so make sure you glass it really well.

I thought so too but most wooden canoes seem to call for ash.

Awesome! You make me want to build a boat now. I don't know what had me laughing more the fact you called your neighbor over late night to help with your bottom or showing him your fancy "Jig" Hahahahah

Looks like you're having fun there, at least we're having fun watching you having fun !! I hope you're using stainless steel or brass screws, don't want your wooden boat rusting away! The weight of all those screws should cut down the need for ballast required to balance the boat in the water. Don't put too many screws in the lifebuoy .... That should definitely float and your anchor sink!!
Until the next exciting, fun episode, stay safe there ( and start taking swimming lessons)
