  • The Friday Bronze heat race 2C had a nice mix of classic warbirds rounding the pylons with John Muszala in the P-51A Mustang 'Shanty Irish' holding off all the other planes to take the checkered flag. This race was way down on speed compared to the top Unlimited gold racers, but it was nice to see the variety of aircraft in one race.

    Love the gull wing Corsair. My favorite WWII bird.

    The Bronze Races aren’t the most intense, but they sure do show a wide variety of warbirds. I love that P-51A with the polished aluminum finish.

      It was one of the best and most important carrier fighters of WW2, according to Captain Eric Brown.

      @@anonymous8780 Although not as good as the Hellcat, or Corsair, the Wildcat was important in that it was the best available to hold the line against the Zero and other Japanese fighters until other, more advanced types could be brought to bear.
      The type flown here at this race is an FM-2.

    Corsair was one of the first models ever built. Was ecstatic when Baa Baa Black Sheep aired

    I was there and was probably one of many that were surprised at just how well that chubby little cat took the lunch from mustangs and a spit and even the corsair.😳

    i saw air races as a kid in the early 1960,s at Richmond Air Force base west of sydney and i remember British electric lightnings breaking the sound barrier between races. I didnt know this type of racing still existed and its incredible to see the old planes going hard.. you never really saw how fast these things were in old TV footage of WWII documentries. Incredible money must be had to even buy the plane let alone work it over and race it.. Insane stuff,, im going to save for a trip to Reno to see these things at it.

    That was very interesting to see. The comparison of flying forms and also noting the speed. So in the maneuvers of a dogfight, these planes probably only make half to 2/3 of their top speed. Thank you for posting.

    I never expected to see the Wildcat do so well. My first thought was it would probably be left in the propwash of the others. Since it wasn't a top unlimited race I guess the difference was probably pilot skill rather than speed. Fun race though. Much more relaxing than the top Gold racers.

    bearbon 2, watch this again. They post the average speed of each aircraft. All the pilots have the skill but the radar gun doesn't lie. The Martlet did a hell of a job.

    Wildcat is a surprise. It sure was moving out. All were great. I thought for sure the Corsair would take it. Great video all round. Thanks.

      Many surprises for me, including the two you mention. How did that Corsair do so poorly? Fully expected it in the top 3. And the tank of an airplane Wildcat do so well? And how did one of those 51D's do so bad? And how on earth did the early-model 51A (weaker Allison engine & 3 blade prop) take the race against the two 51D models? I realize that pilot proficiency is a factor but.........???

    • @craigpennington1251
      @craigpennington1251 5 років тому

      @@lesizmor9079 Yeah, strange stuff but glad the Martlet or Wildcat won the race. He did have it hung out there. They're not as glorified as the 51s but still and outstanding job never the less.

    • @craigpennington1251

      Watched it again and the Wildcat was 3rd in average speed. He didn't win the race but won a commanding position out of the competition at hand.

    Typical "Bronze" race. Flying heavy metal and having a good time. Watching the pilot of the"Martlet" leaning over to hand crank up the gear was the best!HA! Great catch!

      @@wilburfinnigan2142 Not really. It depends on the will to melt the engine. I'm sure no one in Bronze goes full throttle. They're having fun - and entertain. Totally fine...

    whats the difference between an FM2 wildcat and a F4F wildcat?

    • @Voodoo1650
      @Voodoo1650  6 років тому +2

      Oscar Thorpe The FM-2 had 4 guns compared to the F4F which had six guns, the FM-2 had a better engine and also had WEP (War Emergency Power) and was faster at lower altitudes plus had a better climb rate.

    • @conradinhawaii7856
      @conradinhawaii7856 6 років тому +3

      The FM-2s were built by General Motors under license from Grumman.

      @cooperjohn86 6 років тому +2

      The vertical tail on the FM-2 was also extended....necessary to add stability with the more powerful engine.

    The most bizarre and unbalanced air race that I´ve ever seen. From a Wildcat to a Mustang... Doesn´t seem such a mechanical "matchness" between them all. Even before the race was started, you can predict the final result (withdraws apart), so I find this race totally pointless. What American boredom can lead them to do... The only thing that puzzles me is the Wildcat doing apparently so well.
    This is not the way to handle these jewels, then something bad happens and complaints come "mommy, my plane is broken. Can you buy me a new one, please?..."

    • @Alantheleopard
      @Alantheleopard 6 років тому

      Still an odd race. But it would´ve been interesting to see a Hawker Hurricane, a Lighting and a Thunderbolt too. And to make it odder, add a Zero, a Bf-109/Buchón and a FW-190 to the race as well...

    • @Cappedrum
      @Cappedrum 6 років тому +1

      It depends also on how much you want to stress your plane for a pointless/airshow race...i could believe and i know the P51A was really a missile at low altitude, so it was faster than a spitfire IX or P51D that were made for high altitude work...but i can't believe that it can beat a Corsair at the same low altitude.
      Simply on this race i think we've seen how much a pilot want to push his really valued plane for a "fake" race, let me pass the word "fake" as it's not as serious as the unlimited gold.

    • @2Phast4Rocket
