  • Your doctor can be a great help to you in winning Social Security Disability benefits. What is the best way to ask your doctor for help?
As you know the main issue in your SSDI or SSI case has to do with how your medical problems interfere with your dependability and performance at your past work and any other job.
Your doctors, however, are in the business of healing you, or at least minimizing your symptoms. Their focus is not on your vocational capacity. Further, some doctors may view your decision to file for disability as evidence that you are giving up.
As I discuss in this video, however, you can ease your doctor’s concerns if you make it clear that you are pursuing disability reluctantly and that your goal is to rejoin the workforce as soon as your symptoms allow.
Make it clear in conversation and in writing that you have not given up and that you see Social Security disability as a temporary option to hold you over while you fight to improve medically.
You also need to take an active role in making your medical record accurate. Many doctors (or their assistants) simply “cut and paste” whatever complaints you had months or years ago into each office visit record.
You should download records from your patient portal and ask the doctor to update the part of your record that describes your symptoms. If the doctor minimizes the severity of your symptoms, ask for that part of your record to be corrected.
Finally if your doctor wants to help you one of the most persuasive types of evidence he/she can provide is a short (5 or 6 page) functional capacity questionnaire.
These questionnaires address what is most important to Social Security - why you would not be reliable or dependable at a job due to a diagnosed medical problem.

I've gone through this with social security(SSDI) and currently with the VA. Social Security found me disabled for PTSD, depression, anxiety, and mood disorder. I'm having issues with the VA doctors getting a diagnosis for IBS due to my deployment in Iraq back on 12/05-03/05.

Hi. I am interested in receiving answers or advice on how to talk to your doctor about these things too (I am on disability). I would like to ask, what if you cannot work because of severe, serious, & persistent mental illnesses that are specifically permanent mental illnesses like Dissociative Identity Disorder and Non-Speaking & Minimally-Speaking Autism? (Additionally, I see my other mental illnesses as permamnent too, along with those first 2 permanent mental illnesses that I just mentioned). Do you have any advice for that type of situation? For example, any advice for when it comes to the difficulty people may have with speaking about a specifically permanent disability with their doctors (aka, psychiatrists)? Thanks so much...

My Dr. Told me I'm no different or should be no different than 90% of adults with adhd, with an undiagnosed ptsd from my father being murdered when I was 4. I lost count but I've had atleast 5 jobs in the last year, I'm currently in a job I've had for less than a week and I already have a new job interview because I know my current job won't work, im 43 and have have atleast 35-50 jobs since I was 16, its getting worse year by year!

Basically you have to describe to your doctor your disability and why you can’t work.

What about someone trying to get their Disability for ten years? Her doctors refused to give her that letter. She has had several surgeries and she has lost one kidney. She has lost her shoulder she looks like a freak with her shirt off. Can you help her or give her advice? She has an infection and can't get well from it. Agan, can you help her?

As someone who hashed kidney failure, I can attest to the many doctors visits it takes to keep healthy. I am very sorry for your friend. First, I would suggest getting all of the doctors records as a hard copy, from her current doctor. And then change doctors. She also needs to be referred to a nephrologist to maintain the health of her working kidney. Because if she has to go on dialysis, it is very rough on their body. And ESRD ( kidney failure) is one of the diagnoses that automatically qualifies for SSDI. But takeout from me, dialysis is a nightmare. I advise to avoid at all costs. If she has an infection, then she needs to be seen immediately. Go to Urgent care or the ER.
