builders build to demand and will maximize space. If they can fit 15 400spft condos for 500K in the space that only 7 or 8 1200spft condos at 700K would fit they will go with the smaller condos if it makes them more money (yeah my math may not be exact but you know the concept). If you want less 500K condos stop buying them and builders will need to move towards what the people want.

Govt should be involved with building more low income housing. They stopped building low income buildings decades ago (so not only Trudeau issue but all levels and all parities over the last several decades issue) and put all those people into condos and paid their rent for them. This created a demand for condos to rent out. It also reduced the supply of condos/ homes available to people that could afford to buy a condo. Both drove up prices. Also add in govt tied up building permits (which is municipal and provincial- not Trudeau) and that also further reduced supply. Our entire govt system from all levels and all parities created the housing crisis. To blame one man is naive. Don't swallow everything PP tells you. He won't be any different.

The use of the word "homes" is troublesome. They are talking about bachelor and 1 bedroom condos primarily. Toronto is $500K for a 350 sq ft home with no access to the outdoors in the event of more pandemic, emergency lockdowns.

I work in the construction industry with a large network of contractors in my rolodex. If Trudeau kept his word of meeting his target of building new homes my phone would be ringing off the hook. It hasn't. In fact, business is slow now.
There's more houses being built now than when Harper/Conservatives were in power. So if you want to go back to building less, then by all means vote Pierre.

It’s common sense to put a pause on immigration. Building houses will never catch up to the millions of people coming here. Pause the immigration, and build. Let the supply catch up to demand. Then you will see prices coming down on rental units, real estate and new home construction.

Federal government has to step in and tie provincial funding to homes built. It is the only way. Cities love a housing shortage so are doing nothing and trying to restrict building as they get more tax in the inflated values of homes.
Govt should be involved with building more low income housing. They stopped building low income buildings decades ago (so not only Trudeau issue but all levels and all parities over the last several decades issue) and put all those people into condos and paid their rent for them. This created a demand for condos to rent out. It also reduced the supply of condos/ homes available to people that could afford to buy a condo. Both drove up prices. Also add in govt tied up building permits (which is municipal and provincial- not Trudeau) and that also further reduced supply.
Our entire govt system from all levels and all parities created the housing crisis. To blame one man is naive. Don't swallow everything PP tells you. He won't be any different.

The use of the word "homes" is troublesome. They are talking about bachelor and 1 bedroom condos primarily. Toronto is $500K for a 350 sq ft home with no access to the outdoors in the event of more pandemic, emergency lockdowns.
Toronto is less than 10%, they keep voting for high taxes and they got it. The other 90% aren't happy, but Toronto asked for it over and over again. It's high time the GTA suffered along with Canada instead of being insulted from the absolute stupidity of their MPs.

Poilievre won't be able to double homebuilding either. The speed at which we need to build is astronomical and homebuilding needs to double NOW. Every year we wait, we need even more homes faster. Canada does not have the construction workforce to build 550k homes per year no matter how low interest rates are or how many permits are approved. Are we going to have 20% of the entire country working in construction?
