AMIGA FOREVER 😺👍🕹️!
Never had the Amiga in 87, but some cool looking games here John 👍🏻
Funny thing is, those were the WORST looking games ever on an Amiga. they were basically 8bit with a splash of Color. Amiga in the 80's was running games Like Dragons Lair, SPace Ace, Defender OF The Crown, Rocket Ranger, Shadow Of The Beast, Sword Of SOdan. Check thse out to see the massive Difference. they were Sega Genesis/SNES quality gfx or inbetween.
I was looking for a video like this. We all know games like turrican, leander, etc.etc but it is good to remember also old games, where developers had to deal with a complex machine after the 8 bit era
1987 called, and I want back into Barbarian gameplay. For anyone who hasn't partaken, this one throws you into a swamp right before you go on a side-scrolling, dungeon-hopping frenzy with just one sword, one shield, two glorious mouse buttons and on-screen control bars to rule them all. And then right back out again. Forget fancy combos or even joystick controllers, this is about raw, primal hacking and slashing while trying to find one of the 20 buttons to mouse-click, all while somersaulting over traps or standing your own against chunky skeletons, shoddily trained orcs, "sentient rock-piranhas", wolf-men, a dragon, and a maniacally laughing fireball-flinging sorcerer that I never learned the secret to terminating, for several years.
The controls are about as nuanced as a drunken walrus on a pogo stick. Accidentally smashing into walls and waddling backwards was more like a feature, not a bug. You'll curse the flick-scrolling and yearn for some greater sort of control over Flavio McBarbarian, but when you land that perfectly timed shield bash, sending a fireball back into your enemy's face in a pixelated explosion...just wow. Also, you become invincible or enter another dimension from the baddies after you go to pick something up, until you move again. Just part of the magic, I guess.
Verdict: Five out of five pixelated pecs for this brutal, beautiful brawler. This is two-button ballet at its finest!
Some of the games looked like c64 graphics (ie. HardBall, PQ)
Commodore 64 has been here and said give me my games and graphics back.
Thanks for this video!
Thank you for your comment. I am currently planning for the next amiga video. 🙂👍
All the Sierra online games look like straight ports of the 8 bit or cga pc games. I guess the gameplay was good enough that people didn't mind that the graphics were not up to usual Amiga standards.
Exactly... they didn't even try to adapt them to Amiga gfx.
Most games of this era looked so ugly that you could make them for ATARI ST games! And this comment comes from an ATARI fan hehe.
Was this an INTENTIONAL video to damage the Amiga? Because those were the worst Games I have ever seen...most which were literally better in every way on a Commodore 64. I shunned these in the 80's. I was Playing SHadow Of The Beast, Sword Of Sodan, Dragons Lair, Alien Syndrome, Obliterator (psygnosis), Arkanoid II Revenge Of Doh, Maniac Mansion, Zak McKraken (all those Kings Quest type games SUCKED on Amiga because they had Cheap CGA PC like colors and gfx) Test Drive II, Rocket Ranger, Defender Of The Crown.....You know....Games that showed off the Amiga's capabilities.
This video was in no way meant to harm the Amiga. Its just 35 games that where released in 1987, maybe not the best year (game-wise) for the Amiga. However, growing up with the C64 and Amiga a fun game is not all about the gfx.
Maybe you played them in 1988 or 1989, but only arkanoid2 from your list was already released in 1987.
In year 1987, games were made for Commodore 64 and PC. Amiga versions are ported.
In theory, Amiga was superior home computer game platform at 80's but in reality, games were usually bottlenecked from storage space. To keep amount of floppies in sane amount, difference between Amiga and Commodore 64 often was that Amiga allows more color on screen while Commodore 64 graphics were mostly monochromatic. It was easily bad idea to use digitzed HAM images in games because they consume so much disk space.
Amiga was also capable flat polygon graphics also if game was carefully optimized but only few games tried that. Technically almost all Amiga games can be made for Commodore 64 with monochromatic palette or lower fidelity.
Best games from era were Maniac Mansion, ZacMcKraken, Pirates, Paradroid... Amiga just was not primary platform for game developers. There was shift to Amiga and games were made made to Amiga around 1989 but they still made them work with Commodore 64.
