    Can you imagine living on one of the planets orbiting on one of these stars in the cluster.
    More then 10 million stars all so close together not more then 0,1 Ly apart.
    That would truly be an amazing site.

    I live at 32 degrees North Latitude and Caldwell 80 or Omega Centauri is visible from early May to July when it goes over the horizon. It never gets high in the sky so clear seeing weather is a must to get a good view. I think above 40 degrees they can't usually see it at all. Most globular clusters are filled with red stars and so s C80, red stars are the majority even though you see other colors.

      @@schad1738 That's the NATO phonetic alphabet lol Alpha and Omega are in reference to the Greek alphabet.

    • @MountainFisher
      @MountainFisher 2 роки тому

      Omega was given the astronomical Ω symbol because German cartographer Johann Bayer used Ptolemy's data to find and designate this object "Omega Centauri" Ω being the last letter in the Greek alphabet Alpha Α same as ours being the first letter and same shape. So Bayer was actually the first to call it Omega not Ptolemy, who called it a star on the horse's back. Not until English astronomer Edmond Halley rediscovered this object in 1677 was it called a non-stellar object before Mayer called it Omega. It was first recognized as a globular cluster by Scottish astronomer James Dunlop in 1826, who described it as a "beautiful globe of stars very gradually and moderately compressed to the centre". Since it was the biggest star cluster discovered so far and Ω Omega means Great they left the star designation, but call it the Great Omega Star Cluster of Centauri.
      That's a bit of its earthly history.

    • @WarmApplePye

      there is no land on gas giants. hence the name "gas" the further in you go the higher the pressure gets.

    • @Orange-y3d
      @Orange-y3d 7 років тому +5

      Not land like we know it. The core of gas giants is gas that is so dense that it got pressure frozen, so it might be a very dense type of ice called ice VII.

    i have poor hearing and anton is usually very difficult to follow. but seven years ago apparently he sounded like this, which is quite easy for me to understand. what happened? i always assumed that he never switched out his native russian phonemes when he learned english, but it's something else. english language is a broad tent and i don't fault anybody for having an unusual version. i also remember being a lot younger and having no problem with heavy accents ... but there must be other people who think his posts sound like an mp3 that lost half its bits. anton is practically the only astrophysics presenter i follow and i live in hope that he might remodel his speech. fwiw globular clusters are my favorite astronomical objects

    • @MountainFisher
      @MountainFisher 2 роки тому

      No. Alpha or A in Greek, unusually still the same even in modern Cyrillic, is used to refer to the "first", or "primary", or "principal".
      Omega Ω doesn't mean last it means Great, hence the Great Omega Star Cluster, it retains its Greek star letter although it is not a star.
      When used as star designations usually the brightest star is given A and then so on down the 22 letter alphabet, but not always. But Omega or NGC 5139, Caldwell 80 or C80 is a dim star with a 5.31 to 5.68 apparent magnitude. It isn't easy to see by the naked eye so Ptolemy called it a star on the horse's back. It was Johann Mayer who first designated it Omega Centauri based off his primitive telescope he could tell it was big and the most luminescent in the 17th century.
