The predictable winner would have been Wunder, he is what all those Polish critics wanted Chopin's music to sound like, you know, like Zimmerman. I'm happy the jurors didn't fall into that trap this time, choosing a performer with a keen sense of originality and expressiveness. Bravo Yulianna!
Поздравляю Юлианну Авдееву с огромным успехом - Победой на 16-м международном музыкальном конкурсе имени Фридерика Шопена. Русская музыкальная школа вновь заблистала!!!
She played that awkward passage from 2:20 to 2:26 correctly. What a relief ! Most interpretations I have heard slur the notes to camouflage the difficulty. Yulianna did play it fast, but articulated each note clearly. What a massive talent !
There were an amazing pianists in the Chopin competion in 2010. Players like Sun Jiayi Miroslav Kultyshev Louis Schwizgebel Wang Anna Fedorova Ilja Rashovsky Denis Zhdanov Juri Shadrin. The jury could have picked up totally diffirent players in to the final concerto section
A good, competent performance. There was some fire, which proves she has an uncommon talent. Still, I'm not ready to class her among the greats yet. I wasn't swept away.
What?! Where are the pants?!? Miss them... But Wow! Stunning, ultra feminine girlie dress!!! Almost grecian with her hairstyle. Same make-up... BTW, does she play with more split notes than most professionals, well perhaps in other videos at least e.g. op 27/2, D 946, Tannhauser, etc.. Regardless, this is quite a sublime performance. Thanks for upload!
@newFranzFerencLiszt Well yes it's a jury, but it's also a jury that happens to contain several of the best musicians alive today... I think their opinion matters a lot more than some youtuber's...
@mathandmusic1 If you're referring to sensitivity in regards to dynamics, keep in mind that this isn't a professional recording. Low quality microphones can't really accurately capture the true sound of a piano...
@galapz I don't really think you can say "I would like to hear her play on Steinway" because after all Richter in his later years always played Yamaha's and he was still one of the most fantastic pianists to have ever walked the earth. The piano should to a certain extent irrelevant to the performance because after all it is still possible to produce a beautiful sound on a Yamaha. A lot depends on the pianist. Playing on a reputably better piano e.g. Steinway is merely an aid...
My IQ goes up 20 points every time I listen to Chopin. Then I just had to scroll down, and saw some of these comments, and back down to idiotville I went.
good job, well done. though its chopin's personal favorite ballade out of the 4, its nonetheless a nasty one. it sounds simple, but anyone who played/prepared this piece seriously knows what im talking about here.
An excellent performance but Horowitz still reigns supreme in this piece. Why was she given a Yamaha to play on? The top was sparkling, but so was the rest of the range: a Steinway would have still had the sparkle at the top but would have been more mellow in the middle ranges. Just because a brand new 9 footer looks the part doesn't necessarily mean it is!!!
+Glyn Banfield She was not "given" a Yamaha. She chooses Yamaha pianos to play. She won Chopin Competition in 2010 playing on a Yamaha piano chosen by her.
It was the most popular choice of contestants in the 2015 competition and most beautiful sounding piano in that competition. And it was a CFX, not a CFIIIS, the piano she's playing here. It's a much different sounding instrument. There isn't just Steinway and Yamaha by the way, both of which I get tired of hearing. There are so many great pianos, and any brand piano can sound less than great depending on the voicing and other characteristics it has.
@nousernamewhatsoever the reason i say that the opinions of UA-camRS doesn't matter is that sure, the opinion of her audience matters, but I would say that hearing a live performance and hearing a youtube recording are very different experiences... youtube cannot even come close to capturing the essence of classical music. I listen to recordings on the internet purely for academic studying of interpretations. usually fame on youtube comes from fame in real life, not the other way around.
@AhaBach4Life The piano is clearly in tune and I must disagree further--the performance was quite good, not one that would elicit a "yawn" from audience members. Bravo to Ms. Avdeeva!
The others in The Chopin competion in 2010 were not great at all like Trifonov Wunder Geniaukas. The only one as good as Avdeeva was Bozhanov.Bozhanov played the sonata Chopin 3 sonata maybe as good as Avdeeva playing Chopin 2 sonata..In the finale Bozhanov playing Chopin concerto e minor no 1 2nd mvt was the best in the whole competion
What's all of this Steinway talk? If you don't like Yamaha, better be sure you've listened to a lot of them. They vary in sound, from mellow to aggressive. And it is easy to tell this is a poorly recorded one. And it's easy to tell this is the old CFIIIS and not the more colorful CFX. Next, why not Fazioli, Shigeru Kawai, Bosendorfer, C. Bechstein, Bluthner, Ant. Petrof, even if you don't prefer Yamaha. Why not any of those as an alternative? You do realize the Steinway artist program is why there are so many Steinways on stage. When it comes to competitions, more and more competitors are choosing pianos other than Steinway. And, gasp, the Yamaha CFX is one of the most popular choices. There is nothing wrong with a Steinway D. There are good ones and some not so good ones, like so many pianos. But Steinway corporation sure has done a good job of making people equate concert pianos with only Steinway. There are too many great choices, and performers choose pianos due to action and what they feel they can get out of them. How they are matched to a room's acoustics. Their repertoire sometimes. Also how they are prepared by technicians, how they are voiced. They don't always choose by the name on the fallboard as some competitors swith from Fazioli to Shigeru to Yamaha to Steinway in the different competitions. Sometimes it comes down to the characteristic of the individual piano, not the brand. There are too many great pianos to immediately just go "Steinway" as if there were no others.
Have you ever heard of a rubato? I doubt it. You exert yourself to be an expert on tempo in music but your knowledge of music is very poor. Remember that Chopin often used a rubato or the practice of playing with expressive and rhythmic freedom. And Avdeeva made a wonderful use of that practice in her rendition of Chopin Ballade No. 1. So you’d better keep silent and not make fun of yourself.
She may be an interesting interpreter but how can one know, with this ugly sound? It's possible she didn't have another choice of piano here, but whyever choose a Yamahaha if there is any other? It's simply criminal to allow these plastic boxes onto a classical stage, and the lasting damage to the next generations' idea of true sonority is incalculable. Another nail in the coffin of Classic.
Trifonov, Wunder, Geniaukas are not "great"?? Give me a break! Everyone who placed in the finals was fantastic. Lets see you play in that competition! Until you can play as well as the finalists, keep your comparative judgments to yourself and let us enjoy the music without your amateur opinions!
poverina... and this is the first prize at the chopin competition... what this world's becoming if such bad pianist can win a so important competition.... BAD...
Anything "bad" about this performance is the terrible sound quality and weird noises FROM THE CAMERA. Omg she is easily one of the best pianists and is such a queen; there is absolutely nothing that warrants you to attack her or the Chopin Institute. She won the 16th for her incredible musicality and interpretations, not the sound quality of the cameras there.
This is the first time I see her in a traditional lady's full gown dress. Why can't she dress properly like this in all of her concert? She played a concert at the 2015 Chopin competition and wore pants. How awful. It is without a doubt that she is probably the pianist who plays Chopin best but she shouldn't come onstage with pants.
Fred MyOpinion That's like saying a guy (or anyone) shouldn't have worn pants. Who gives a fuck what she wears (as long as its appropriate for a concert e.g. dress or suit). She looks damn good and (more importantly) sounds damn good in a dress or a suit
Спасибо Юля за то, что вы делаете! И поздравляем с победой в Варшаве! Мы гордимся Вами!
Sie spielt fantastisch. Ich kann nicht aufhören, Ihr zu lauschen.

Good and frequent use of rubato, very clean and clear like D colour diamond
WELL DONE!!!
(p.s. I love your dress! it reminds me a lot of belle's dress from the disney movie "beauty and the beast") :D
A good, competent performance. There was some fire, which proves she has an uncommon talent. Still, I'm not ready to class her among the greats yet. I wasn't swept away.
@mwu42251 actually the opinions of youtubers does matter because we are the ones who are going to buy (or not) her cd's,and go/not go to her concerts.
What?! Where are the pants?!? Miss them... But Wow! Stunning, ultra feminine girlie dress!!! Almost grecian with her hairstyle. Same make-up...

GREAT!!!
BRAVISSIMO ! ! ! !
Finally she using a dress !!!!! GREAT INTEPREATION BY THE WAY : D
won the 16th international chopin competition
@loannisGPetrakis . Fascinating observation. I had missed it.
LOL does anyone notice that she's dressed like Belle from Beauty and The Beast?
@newFranzFerencLiszt Well yes it's a jury, but it's also a jury that happens to contain several of the best musicians alive today... I think their opinion matters a lot more than some youtuber's...

seriously, people are really so concerned about a woman using a dress or pants, i thought the only thing that should matter is the song....
Piece***
super!
its true...i never thought about it like that.
but...that's not me.
アブデワさんがドレスきてるー!ってかこれ、ショパンコンクールのまえかー美しいし骨太の演奏だよな好きだ

Brava!
@happyboy86 Silly remark. How can such simple, straightforward playing be classed as insincere? Lovely, original sound.
Why does she change from dress to suit?
@nousernamewhatsoever the reason i say that the opinions of UA-camRS doesn't matter is that sure, the opinion of her audience matters, but I would say that hearing a live performance and hearing a youtube recording are very different experiences... youtube cannot even come close to capturing the essence of classical music. Her performance would have sounded better had better recording been used. Shame it wasn't though, she plays very passionately.
at 7:00, did someone clap thinking it was over??
@AhaBach4Life The piano is clearly in tune and I must disagree further--the performance was quite good, not one that would elicit a "yawn" from audience members. Bravo to Ms. Avdeeva!

je suis d´acorde.
lol!
Love her other Chopin but why does she play this, as we say in New York, like she's double-parked? Let it breathe, love.
Can you do any better?
@ungava100 im sorry but perhaps you hear too many noobs playing ballade 1.

AhaBach4Life: Are you tone deaf or just an unlistening clod? The Yamaha, which I DO NOT prefer to the Steinway is in perfect A 440 pitch!
She is the niece of the Prime Minister, randomness?
now the piano competition hav lose the sense.
Evgeni Bozhanov was the true 1st prize winner.
Am I the only won thinks someone should be fired for not tuning the piano?
@newFranzFerencLiszt after all its the opinion closest to the truth.
Hey camera holder, Put the Camera down! So much clicky clack; you ruin the girl's efforts to create beautiful sound.
@mdlayt64 no not fire,,, SHOOT!!!!!!!!!

I can't believe she won. This is like played by amateur. What a huge mistake!!
Khozyainov should be the winner
Yamaha? Piano is grossly out of tune. Totally inexcusable. Some nice passages. Overall yawn.
She may be an interesting interpreter but how can one know, with this ugly sound? It's possible she didn't have another choice of piano here, but whyever choose a Yamahaha if there is any other? The tempo of this piece was totally ignored. It cannot tie the composition. It doesnt maks sense at all. JUNK!!!
