Many people wish Hunter was still the edgy Golden Guard he wanted others to see. While I do love this side of him, I think what makes him a great character is his development. The cold exterior you may encounter is probably not the same as the one within. He feels 3 dimensional, but that third dimension expands over time. And soon enough, that flat 2d circular mask became a full head of a character.
He is my favorite too, hope he will have important part in the season 3 with the whole, you know being grimwalker and Belos/Philip most likely hiding in his cloths.
He’s my favourite as well but if I had to mention one problem I have with him it’s the fact that they hyper nerfed him like in eclipse lake even when he was exhausted both mentally and physically as well as using a real staff for the first time he held his own against Amity and King he was also using whatever that light attack was as well as construction magic but in the most recent episodes he’s being restricted to his teleport only he’s also being smacked around like a rag doll even though he was literally the leader of the emperor’s coven I understand having him on par with people like raine and Darius is a bit absurd but he should at least be comparable to them since he was trained in combat we’re assuming his entire life but he’s on par or weaker then a bunch of high school prodigy’s when he himself is supposedly a prodigy it’s a bit frustrating thank you for coming to my Ted talk

I’d say trauma. The episode at Hexside was just a week after Hollow Minds, if that, and the illusions used by the scouts directly triggered those experiences, so it’s fair to say he wasn’t in the right mental state to be fighting then. Plus he was probably pretty malnourished since he was obviously wasn’t eating much else then snack foods and whatever else he found around. Then, in the episode before the finale, he did well enough, but Kikimora had the Abomiton of Sparkles and Death as opposed to being drugged like she was last time, plus he got switched with Luz. In King’s Tide, he was literally dying for half the episode because of the draining spell, so we should probably cut him some slack there. Anyways, point was, I think it was just trauma and circumstances
Luz to Hunter: You are a bad person, and I do not like you. Multiple episodes later. Luz to Hunter: Gotta make sure you're safe too, Hunter. You're family now. Character progression. You love to see it.
He reminds me SO much of Zuko it's driving me insane. They both had such similar motives and backstories that it's actually kinda crazy. They have abusive father figures, were kicked from their home residency, found a parent in someone unexpected, were both enemies to Mae Whitman (she voiced Katara in ATLA and Amity in TOH), and their love interests are so personalityless and boring that it causes my physical pain and the relationship should've been written out of the story because they were better off off screen.

I know this vid is about Hunter, but can we just appreciate how protective Gus is of Willow when Hunter shows up? The whole time Hunter and Willow are talking, Gus' eyes never leave Hunter and I can't believe I missed that detail the first 2 times I watched. I think that the main reason why Gus broke down first (I say first cause you know they ain’t holding that trauma in forever) is that when they were fighting Belos, he saw into his mind with his illusion magic. Meaning he saw all of the sh*t Belos pulled with the Grimwalkers, Belos betraying his (Brother? Friend? I’m not sure), and the countless other horrible acts he had committed. I would cry too if I saw that.

I actually love how he acts differently when he has the mask. Like he has that extra layer of protection that gives him the safety to be confident enough to act in that chaotic and chatismatic way, he puts up a front and ignores his issues until the mask comes off and he can no longer hide behind it its some great narrative imo I keep imagining him just looking all sad under the mask but forcing himself to speak in an upbeat way to hide how he truly feels. The same could be said regarding how ppl call him. When he is reffered to as The Golden Guard he acts more like when he had the mask but when ppl just call him Hunter he doesnt put up that front anyore. Idk i just love the attention to detail and I love both versions of him ♡
