    Awesome discussion on the rake. When I first started tabulating my online betting back in the day, I had a difficult time figuring out why I was short in my account based upon what I kept track of on my spreadsheet. I had forgotten the rake when building my formulas. Wild how much it affects someone like myself who is usually low money bettor. You didn't empty all the bank accounts at the table but it was an entertaining video for me. Thanks Ethan.

      It wasn't like this before COVID, but the rake at 1/3 NL is pretty high at Encore so it's tough to be profitable in the long term. The action does make up for the high rake and the wait lists get like 100 people deep, even on the weekdays.

    Hi Ethan, I enjoy watching your videos, and the last two working on a "challenge" attempt to build a bankroll of $5K or more at $1-$3 NL stakes is no exception. However, if your intent was to help newer players to build such a bankroll on limited funds, I'd propose starting this exercise with a reasonable "maximum" starting bankroll to better fit what others are likely to have available in total funds.
    Realistically, I don't think a $500 buy-in here is what most players at this level are going to start with, not to mention a top-off of another $300 on the next hand. I guess my main point is newer players are likely to have a very limited starting bankroll and fear of busting out very quickly, and without a similar healthy reserve that you have earned and built to work with.
    From a realistic point of view, from someone who has played this level a lot in the past, I'd venture a guess that folks playing these levels do so from necessity. They aren't likely to risk what could very well be their ENTIRE starting bankroll of $500 on their first session starting buy-in.
    So even if their entire bankroll is $1,000, they might come to the table with two buy-ins of $100 to $200 each,... and end their session if that gets lost. If their bankroll is just $500, risking only one session for a $100 buy-in is what likely happens. This strategy is more in keeping with reasonable "Money Management" planning.
    Anyway, just my thoughts, since of course anyone could build a $5K bankroll with unlimited buy-ins available and get really lucky on a few sessions. But when your starting bankroll is truly limited (using the "goal" of a bankroll building to $5k to maybe as high as $10K, you pick the starting figure?), this puts some of the "fear of failure" into even your play that's on display as a teaching exercise. 🙂
    Cheers,
    Joe T

    • @theejayzeeable
      @theejayzeeable Рік тому

      He stated making $5k at 1/3 in 30 days. He didn't state building a BR from only several buy-ins, so this isn't for beginners. It's for people sufficiently rolled for 1/3.

    • @josephtousignant7318
      @josephtousignant7318 Рік тому

      @@theejayzeeable Hi Jay, I took it differently because I think Ethan's early statement in the first vlog (link below) in this challenge bears that out. Listen to the first minute or so where he clearly states:
      Ethan's quote: "... it is a bankroll challenge. Going to be playing the $1-$2 and $1-$3 stakes trying to win up $5,000 and I want to do this because honestly last year when I first started the channel I actually did this myself. I went from $0 to $10,000 at the $1-$3 stakes because at that time personally I really needed a bankroll and I thought this would be a really fun challenge and video series over the next month. Hopefully, I can complete it starting at the $1-$2 and $1-$3 stakes to win $5,000 ..." (/quote)
      ua-cam.com/video/yR1lJiqKNtc/v-deo.html
      His rising bankroll has truly been extraordinary during this short time period, and his aggressiveness is a big part of that IMO. But also note his stating "at that time I really needed a bankroll" says a lot that he was in the same position of many starting out and needing to work UP a decent $$$ bankroll. That's why I think this series may have been meant more for the young startups at these stakes. YMMV 🙂

      @@RampagePoker That's an impressive ride over the short time you've been playing, especially since the $1-3 games I've played in rarely had folks calling even a $50 bet. The action on these tables, so far, was more like the $2-5 games I've played where the max buy-in was also just $500. To get that kind of action at $1-3 stakes was exceptional.

    Some of the best if not the best poker is in the poker clubs in Texas which I believe a lot of players know this considering we pay 12 and hour to play most places. I agree the casinos kill you in the small cash games with the rake size. Anyway I play in Houston Texas at spades, prime social, Texas card house and legends mostly. Spades poker house is hot right now very good action and you can find a game there almost all hours of the day and night. I have been following you since the beginning and I’ve seen every vlog you ever put out I appreciate all your hard work and content you put out sir. May you run good in all your sessions peace out!

    At $1-$2 and/or $3, rake matters. Plus stacks are short for most players. Hard to call even open ended, or a nut flush draw against small stacks, and players savvy enough to make you pay to draw. And yet, you must occasionally to balance your range. I usually try to do so in multiway pots, as 2 or 3 potential payoffs mitigates small stacks.

    Ethan - you're doing the community a huge favor by hammering on the rake situation in low stakes games. As your comments indicate, people just aren't aware of how costly the rake tax is. You want to play a small number of massive pots, as you said.
    P.S. the second lesson, which you forgot to heed is that 4bets in $3 BB games are AK on alternate Thursdays, and KK+ every other time. You were so funny, calling with TT then calling on the turn because "Maybe he has ace-high..." He did have ace-high, with an ace kicker. He was obviously terrified you had a king but my God man, this is not GarrettA you're up against. Fold, and he will *show* you the aces.

You can't compare it to NH card rooms or even high-end tribal casinos like Foxwoods and Mohegan Sun in CT. Before the pandemic, I played a lot at all of the above places and a bit at many more places in NH, plus MGM Springfield. Encore was on my rotation, but was never my primary place to grind out profits. Those were Mohegan Sun in CT, and Chasers in NH. In the poker glory days, Foxwoods.

    Rampage is just telling it how it is and at 1-3 rake cuts down on profits much more than other games.

    The rake has gotten out of hand at many card rooms, and it's mostly in order to fund ridiculous "bad beat" jackpots, which rec players think are fun, but which aspiring pros hate. I know several low-limits players who have quit their local scenes as a result of outrageous rakes. They had been able to grind out a steady profit, but can't or don't care to move up to higher stakes. Their hourly EV at the 1-3 tables with high rakes is so small now it's not worth playing.

    So Rampage, iv'e recently seen you have been threatening the content creator from the channel "Finding Equilibrium" for a copyright claim. I have benn watching his content for a long time now & the videos he makes are very informative using deep dives into solvers to help explain why certain players come to their decisions. He mainly focues on top tier players as their knowledge of GTO playing style is vast. His breakdowns are an excellent study tool & have recieved countless plaudits from all corners of the poker landscape.
    Your reaction to him using a clip or two from your vlogs is completely over the top. I believe him using a fraction of your content is a compliment to your ability and recent sucess at the higher stakes. You need to embrace the adulation, endorcement that he is giving u & not focus on the superfluous. In other words, wind your neck in Rampage & continue your climb to Poker stardom. Your a likable character.

    Yes unfortunately the newly re-opened, much smaller, and now surrounded by freshly placed slot machines, Boston Encore poker room now offers the highest raked game in the country, thanks for getting the word out! If nothing else maybe their industry leading rake will keep most the Euro poker pros camped in FL and Texas to battle with Lex and Brad. Hope you run good while in town!
