with airmattress in hammock it helps that you do not fill it to the very brim. that way it conforms to your shape. 😊 . And yes diamond setup for the tarp gives more cover against the rain even if the tarp is not the largest. but 3mx3m works well.
Adding to the comments about proper tarp and underquilt. You need a proper hammock as well, usually they are a bit small for tall people you should find yourself 11ft(3.3m) version
Hammoc camping has a small learning curve into it. (You had totally wrong tarp for it) Get a real tarp, like DD 3x3 meters, and put it at diamond shape. Or DD 3x4,5 and put that like you put yours in this video. And then buy a good underquilt to go with that set, and you are good to go. And after those things, learn some basic knots. Or, actually learn those knots before trying hammock camping again 😉
Nice one Dave! I started my solo hiking and camping and camping adventures in SW Finland just this winter. I have been tent, laavu and tarp camping in Teijo National Park. Great that you got sponsorship from RR! Their pants are super! I love the camo print ones!
If you decide to visit Tampere and would like to experience some archery in a bit different setup, gimme a shout. Im talking about a path in forest with different ranges and targets. I'll throw in "pannukahvit" and campfire snacks on site after the run, as i always do when i spend a day in the woods :)
Last weekend, we had a winter camp in scouts, and we slept in that kind of tent (puolijoukkueteltta) and slept in it. It snowed all Saturday, and we went ice fishing and sledding. I want to get myself a hammock.
It is a lot of hassle but if you place one tent on top of another one it makes really good insulating layer in between them. That way you can get some more use out of broken tent.
Kudos with the tarp! I have been using the cheapest one for years. It doesn't look cool but it serves it's function. Sometimes I get laughed at using the tarp like that but I don't mind. They spend money on something which I don't need.
I hope you like it here in Finland, i love your vids, and the interest of yours to Finland, my record is 7h ice fishing. Its called (pilkkiminen) Like "im ice fishing" - "minä pilkin"
There's only one thing to remember: there is no rights or wrongs, only what works for you! The problem with a regular sleeping pad in a hammock in my experience is that they are quite narrow. At least I always get cold around my shoulders. And as you said the sleeping pad has a habit to move around. An underquilt is one solution to the problem. If you don't want to invest in an underquilt, a big (150x200cm or bigger) thick wool or fleece blanket can be used instead. Just fold it in half and use it as a "sleeping pad". I always use a blanket at home when I sleep on my balcony, down to about -10C. The packing size of a blanket is a minus, but you probably already have one to try with. The tarp you are using should be big enough, it looks like a 2x3m, you just have to try to adjust it better. Just try to cover all of the hammock, not the ropes. And if you can lower the tarp on both ends it can give better coverage. You could also try to set up the tarp in a "diamond" shape.
Dave my man you're definitely not supposed to sleep with the thermo pad inside the sleeping bag lmao! And I noticed your tarp was quite short. You could've had it like you tried it at first, 1 corner to each side and 1 corner to head and toes. That's how I use my 3x3 tarp it's quite cozy!
With my claustrophobia and fear of all living things, I wouldn't even attempt this. Also, after such a long time hearing people say "piste fi" it felt weird hearing "dot FI"
I might be wrong, but you should actually sleep in your underwear + longsleeve shirt (to keep your shoulders warm, just in case) in your sleeping bag, because your bodyheat will keep you warmer, than clothes on you. The problem at this point is that you sleep in a hammock... So how would you plan to put on your clothes back at the morning? Smush all your clothes into the feet end of the sleeping bag and put them on before getting up? Some Partiolainen once told me to sleep naked in your bag to keep yourself warm, so... that might have been a lie or actual good advice.
@@davecad thank you for replying, you're a brave man for willing to tackle the nuclear wasteland dubbed Kouvola. Please vlog the deadly experience and I wish you good luck.
Never to the ice without ice picks, those can save your life if you go through the ice
yes that helps if the ice is thin and you break it more
Also recommended is a floating overall.
If the ice is very thick there is basically no danger of that happening
@@violaer Stil its smart to be prepared to what if situation.
Of course you got the army tent up quickly after all the practise in the Finnish army simulator 😁
Haha exactly 😁😁
I noticed the mishap with the tarp right away. 😃 "sure that's not long enough"
the TAKATALVI has came in helsinki
I knoooow. It came like 3 days after filming this... I definitely jinxed us! 😭
@@davecad yep
Sorry to ruin your party. It's february, this is just winter =)
One notion thought. The ground should totally be avoid of snow before pitching the thent, or you might end waking up in pool of sleet.
Hammock camping (and pretty much all camping) is "välinelaji" as we say in finnish. Just get 3x3 tarp and underquilt.
I think an under quilt would make a huuuuge difference! I might have to invest

@@davecad Hammock is quite cold 'couse air gets below you even with good matress.
I ve slept many nights in that, half platoon tent, longest strech was a full month in the middle of the winter. Good old army days.
Thinking about nothing, except should I open the next beer or should I change the lure or bait. So relaxing 🙂
You're supposed to lay at an angle in the hammock so it doesn't get too tight on the sides
Dave's voice is so soothing. He could read the dictionary from A-Z, and I would watch that on repeat.
I'd pay to hear an audio book by him in Finnish.
Right? :)

You should get trangia to cook your food! I have one, my parent's have one and my grandparents used to have one.
Pretty heavy tho on long hikes.
It's really peaceful. Really relaxing.
Koska kouvolaan?😀
Gotta say sleeping in the cabin was definitely the correct choice. Getting wet in the winter while sleeping outside is a pretty bad idea
Army tent is warm in winter, russian didnt have tents in winter war.
I may be biased saying that I like the "sissiteltta" the best. Very cozy.

You are lucky this is one of the warmest winters
I was watching the whole time when you tried to cover the hammock that the other end is gonna get wet 😅
You indeed jinxed it, now we have snow again. Which is not necessarily a bad turn of events!
Nice video Dave! Wasn’t sure if you were going to make one since I never saw you filming 😁 Let’s do the hammock camping again soon! 🙌🏼
i live in finland rovaniemi but here is alot of snow

Just boil the sausages in that burned porokeitto with water and after eating, use the sausage water for coffee. Beautiful!
Everything done wrong. Even that you didn't eat the cold sausages. Sausages are always ready. Makkara on aina valmis.

Thanks 👍
It's good to test these thins out before you do them in the middle of nowhere.

In helsinki it just snowed a lot a few days ago, where are you cause i don’t see like any snow? Or did you film this before 3 days ago?
