*WHY DOES VIRTUAL COURT ACCESS MATTER?*
*Greater transparency and accountability.* Virtual court access ensures that the public has safe, affordable, and meaningful opportunities to observe their legal system at work. With greater public access to court comes greater accountability.
*Foundational Right.* The First Amendment and Sixth Amendments to the U.S. Constitution guarantee open public access to court proceedings. As the world becomes more virtual due to the pandemic, it is imperative that rights keep up with the times to ensure fairness and transparency.
*Foster civic engagement.* As city hall proceedings and public meetings become more widely accessible virtually, so too should court proceedings. If the everyday happenings of our judiciary are more accessible, the public will be more civically engaged.
*Accessibility for loved ones and more equitable public participation.* While courts are technically “open” to the public, the challenges of coming to court - the cost of transportation, taking time off from work, and child care - erect barriers of entry that disproportionately affect low-income communities. Virtual court access ensures loved ones can be present to support defendants, victims, and witnesses in their proceedings.

I just left voicemails for both Chairman Clippenger and Chairman Smith in support of HB647. THANK YOU, Fiona & Zelda, for all that you do. The only way to make the world a more fair and just place for the disproportionate number of people suffering from social inequality is to TAKE ACTION. We forget how powerful our voices can be, both alone and collectively. Something as simple as taking a couple of minutes out of our day to make a phone call can actually do enormous good for the many who need our help. Keeping remote access to court proceedings is absolutely imperative. ❤

@@BillHaines37 kids put their palm up to their face to mimic a smartphone. It is weird but they don’t use regular old phones anymore. Anyway, Fiona looks great doing it the “old” classic way. If she mimics the old rotary phones, then maybe she would not get the point across to the younger generation lol. Fiona mimicking a rotary phone would be an entertaining thing to see.
She also hung up the receiver, putting it back on its base, so extra cool points there. ☎️
In her next video, she should totally “rotary phone” it. The video may be a bit longer since she’ll have to wait for each digit to rotate it’s way back, but my deceased grandmother would totally appreciate it. 👍

During Covid one of my roles was to remotely (and occasionally in person) observe Domestic Violence hearings. The courts I observed did not make it easy. Sometimes the Court Clerk would forget to "let you in" electronically. Sometimes the court would forget to have the sound on for those observing. Eventually, the court just gave up remote access with no explanation, except "Commissioner X doesn't want remote access to continue". Fiona is right: observing courts is eye opening. It is not always what goes wrong that is enlightening. Often it is what goes right. That is, sometimes it is refreshing to see that our court processes and court workers demonstrate what a fair system can look like, and how that system can have a positive impact on people's lives. For instance, what a DV survivor looks like when they are granted a protection order.

*As always, judges maintain discretion* to take the rare action of restricting public access to court if state law and the U.S. Constitution allow.
The bill *would not require new equipment* as courts have already allowed remote access opportunities during COVID.
*WHAT IS VIRTUAL COURT ACCESS?*
Virtual court access gives the public *remote access to court proceedings* via live audio and video streaming.
In 2021, the Court of Appeals *authorized virtual access to courtrooms* in MD, facilitating the courts’ performance of core functions during the pandemic.
Virtual court access for the public is *in no way a replacement* for in-person legal proceedings themselves.

PG County (Maryland) courtwatchers started by going to court in person. Nowadays there are courtwatching groups in many cities that use Zoom, so one can do it from anywhere!

I have a friend who has a case in PG. fortunately he was never arrested. But we were at the preliminary hearing last week and I see the craziness ur talking about. My friends case is about illicit internet pornographic images between him and his boyfriend. I saw the jail docket being let in one at a time and they almost always got a “raw deal”. My friend is lucky
Thanks Fiona. Just in case you have time can you do a pros and cons video on transparency? My experience being physically present in cases, whether I’m bearing witness in court or an active participant, there seems to be a mixed bag of ideas that arise. Overtly, I concur that transparency is like you said and are advocating for ostensibly the most important issue.
If I don’t hear back I’ll assume I’m missing something and keep digging. This whole court watching topic is compelling now. Much appreciated.

Hi Zelda, I have a question and I apologize for it being off the subject but it's valuable. In 1990 does Fiona remember a young woman named Krisi or Chrissy? Blonde almost white hair, blue eyes? Fiona was younger then, but if she does remember, there's a story to share.

She talked about this girl she knows who plays piano, sings, writes her own songs. Wanted to carve her name into my arm. I said no, and that her name sounds like an old lady's! We had fun hanging out stoned. I said about where that girl was and after hearing talk about this girl, L.A., "Sounds like she's in the right place." She came up to north of Seattle with a boyfriend, or to stay with one, older than us, never met him, she hung out mostly with my neighbors, two girls, and all 4 of us would smoke listen to music and just laugh, had great conversations for hours, she was here for several weeks. I had guitars. I lost the weed container that she did attempt to carve Fiona's name. Thought I'd share, hope Fiona finds her, she knew something when Fiona was 12! Oh yeah in reply to what I said, she: "I'll tell her you said that." She was way cool. And I didn't know Fiona Apple's last name was Maggart until less than 9 year's ago.

And right now she is interested in the court system and bringing a greater transparency to the people of America. Don't question it.
