i lived there 50 years ago. Must have left when you arrived. It seemed like the City-Parish government always tried to do good for the city, especially saving the downtown areas. As you say, "such potential" with Exxon and other refineries plus LSU and Southern Universities. My old friend said Katrina evacuees stopped progress and increased crime. I don't know. Many years since I lived there. Been gone since my grandparents died.
I live in LA & the hood i stay in has its crime it has its gang violence, but the people in our neighborhood have a sense of pride, we clean our streets, & some neighbors are even remodeling their homes! Just cause it’s the “hood”, doesn’t mean it has to look like skidrow or Detroit.
you drove right past the house that my sister and i used to live in. I remember some of the people who lived around us always used to say “Livings hard in easy town” I remember I used to go to school at tara high, we used to hotbox the bathrooms and shit 🤣
I wish you could have paused or zoomed to get more street signs. I caught the first one, South 21st street. If you went north a few blocks and then around the two cemeteries, you'd be on North 21st street, aka Scenic Highway. A few more blocks and you'd pass Bay St, then a couple more to Chestnut St. Turn left and go down to 15th street and turn right. Go a few houses and on the left is the house where I lived from age 5 to 14. My grandparents on my mother's side lived across the street. Our house backed up the the KCS railyard, and across the yard there was a hobo camp that we would on rare occasion visit. Of course crossing the railyard was dangerous, and if anyone's mother spotted us going over or under railcars, then OUR mothers would hear about it. At the north end of 15th street was a pasture where one family had horses. I've lived elsewhere since age 18, but I've in recent times "driven" the streets where I was a kid in Baton Rouge via Google Streetview. Only one word comes to mind when I see that neighborhood now compared to the 1950's: sad. John Ed Pearce: "Home is a place you grow up wanting to leave, and grow old wanting to get back to. "
I live on one of the streets in the video. My husband and I own our house. We keep the house up we keep the yard clean. We keep our cars in the garage. Is it perfect? No. Is it a movie star house in a movie star neighborhood? No. Not by any stretch of the imagination! But it belongs to us and we take care of what we have! We are not wealthy. If we were we would not be living in Dixie. By the way I did not name the area someone else did! However we work hard at our jobs. We pay our bills and we pay our property taxes every year. My neighbors keep their houses up and keep their yards clean. Its not perfect I know. All too well. There are places that need to be cleaned up and cleaned out. I wish the politicians would get involved and clean Dixie up! Don't get me started on Louisiana politics! I have been living in Louisiana my entire life and Hollywood makes politicians sound and look too good! But I wish someone would have spoken to me about the video. I would have said plenty! I could go on and on but I will stop! I'm afraid i might sprain my fingers! I work at a hair salon and I need my fingers to work! Make a full documentary and speak to the people! Dixie can be fixed. It's the powers that be who can fix it! They know Dixie needs help but they will not put their lavish parties aside to do a damned thing about it! Talk to the politicians who beg for our votes then abandon us after!
I spent a year living on the street in New Orleans. Now I live in Baton Rouge. I stay in a nice neighborhood, but you don't have to go far to see bad areas. Where I work we just had someone od in the bathroom the other day.

Yes, huge swathes are indeed like this. Scotlandville, Zion City, Plank, Scenic, Airline, Evangeline, Winbourne, next to downtown, Old Old Baton Rouge, McKinley area, right north of LSU, etc. some areas are super nice and well-maintained. I’ve worked lately in the poor parts of town, and part of my job was to walk these neighborhoods with a coalition of city cops, Sheriff’s Office, DA’s, Mayor’s and some nonprofits, passing out treats, literature, etc. I have my ideas about that. Doesn’t look great in person either.
I like how they preserve nature.Look as he drives look at the Trees ..how they hang over streets .homes yards are stuffed wit them....I appreciate how yall appreciate Your Home...
Baton Rouge north side is huge. So many hoods in the north. From the airport down to Florida Blvd. The south is smaller but still getting down. Southeast BR down by gardere still hood too but it ain’t as concentrated.
I’ve worked there a lot for the past 20 years. That’s not a bad hood. Poor, but not dangerous. I could take you to a part that would have you running red lights.
Baton Rouge born and raised here !!! Moved away twice and ended up right back home and still here to this day !!! Yes I live in the hood South side BR wouldnt change it we some down earth kind and generous folks !!!
Born and raised in east Baton Rouge parish practically my entire life, but I went to BRMHS off government st and Southern A&M and visited my friends that went to LSU...that was about the closest I’d go to south Baton Rouge 😂
BR has a more rural look and feel, less crowding and a slower pace. They sound pretty much the same, although BR accent a little more subdued I think, for the most part. They both have a lot of poverty and crime, although N.O. is worse.

So basically you’re showing problems that are nationwide. You’re looking at Wealth inequality, you’re looking at Racism, healthcare inequality, resource inequality etc. I’d be willing to bet the police presence in these neighborhoods is no where near what it is around Fraternity Row or the wealthier neighborhoods in BR. I only watched a few minutes of your video, I’m not sure what you think you’re doing? If you’re trying to right a wrong, you’re not helping. Did you stop and talk to anyone in these neighborhoods? And yes I’ve seen worse streets in NOLA. If you beat someone down long enough, some might break. And as the saying goes, If you’re not part of the solution you’re part of the problem!
@@vooveks Ok thanks I just watched some of this video. I live between BR and NOLA along the River in a small town, but have also lived in NOLA. I’ve always tried to be part of the solution rather than part of the problem. I feel that it doesn’t take grand gestures but small every day things make a difference.

i lived there 50 years ago.
I see u boi.. Dixie, easy town, and da park
You must don't know all the worst parts of Baton Rouge where you'll see people here and there lol
Is it just me or is this area pretty damn nice?
Its just country
so i guess every hood has to be project housing and clothes lines huh???
@@AnimalBlundettoK so I guess you're mad because I gave your hood a compliment? You want your hood to be called shitty?
I live in LA & the hood i stay in has its crime it has its gang violence, but the people in our neighborhood have a sense of pride, we clean our streets, & some neighbors are even remodeling their homes! Just cause it’s the “hood”, doesn’t mean it has to look like skidrow or Detroit.
@@de5163 So basically you're saying you WANT to be hood even though it's not a bad area.
you drove right past the house that my sister and i used to live in. I remember some of the people who lived around us always used to say “Livings hard in easy town” I remember I used to go to school at tara high, we used to hotbox the bathrooms and shit 🤣
In the video where you see the over head traffic, COPS filmed a couple of shows in that area. Daytime, safe. Nighttime, not on your life.
"
Lol good essay you just earn
Yourself a 100
This could be at least about 40 states in the country, though some won't admit it!
Its so weird seeing my neighborhood through a camera 😅😂 and literally drive by the basketball court 💯😂
What's the PURPOSE?! BESIDES THANKING GOD FOR A ROOF OVER YOUR HEAD!! GO & HELP THE HOMELESS
I spent a year living on the street in New Orleans. Now I live in Baton Rouge. I stay in a nice neighborhood, but you don't have to go far to see bad areas. Where I work we just had someone od in the bathroom the other day.

No offense but how do yall be getting around? Theres no stores it looks like for a while in walking distance, nobodies houses are gated, and how well lit is it at night?

That's true 💪🏿💪🏿
I know you ain’t pass up chicken shack i can’t do it 😂
I noticed that too. Chicken shack is fire thoughhh
I need a Tuesday special
I wish you would show the street signs or say the names of the streets you are driving down.. thanks 😊

Next time u come to baton rouge visit brookstown and Zion city
There is a saying we have here in Baton Rouge. “If you are on a street named after a state, president, Indian chief or tribe, turn around and GTFO!”
Number or alphabet too
Look like he rolling kinda fast through some parts. 🤣

Worst hoods yet multiple houses have multiple cars. This used to be all working class.
Bus system here is shit. You need a car to work.
I went to southern university there back in 1991...
You was a true soldier
Baton Rouge north side is huge. So many hoods in the north. From the airport down to Florida Blvd. The south is smaller but still getting down. Southeast BR down by gardere still hood too but it ain’t as concentrated.
Then you got Sherwood too
This reminds me of Tallahassee hoods. Houses built the same way, both capital cities, and the hoods are right next to the university
Southern a lot of homes down south where built like that in the 50s and 60s
I’ve worked there a lot for the past 20 years. That’s not a bad hood. Poor, but not dangerous. I could take you to a part that would have you running red lights.
Did you past nba youngboy home

Good video my G I see some of these comments salty but keep doing ya thang
I miss that clicking sound 🔉 coming from CharlieBo313 truck 🚚.
I'm from the UK and I can't help but when someone mentions louisiana I say "ye herd me"
Oh wow. Y’all listen to a lot of Louisiana music over there? Bounce music? Jigg music? Zydeco?
Where is north sherwood? Bon Marche? North foster? Wood dale? Belaire? This isn't half as bad as a lot of what you see around BR.
What's your take on BR compared to the N.O. Charlie? Good video.
BR has a more rural look and feel, less crowding and a slower pace. They sound pretty much the same, although BR accent a little more subdued I think, for the most part. They both have a lot of poverty and crime, although N.O. is worse.
@@CharlieBo313 BR sounds more country and some of the slang they use came from NOLA so BR is like a waterd down version
New Orleans is a Caribbean city Caribbean flavor and Caribbean accent, while Baton Rouge Is just country, southern and typical deep South 😑🤷🏽♂️
@@ivamcole2304 nothing is Caribbean about New Orleans, it has a strong French creole culture mixed with African influences which explains the accent. Miami is a more Caribbean city
@@Chosenone504 it is Caribbean. Don't you know one of the nicknames of the city is the northern most tip of the Caribbean?!!, There is nothing American or Southern about New Orleans. And to think-all those areas used to be nice at one time. Those that could moved on, those who who didn't are what's left.
90% of these areas were white, 40 to 50 years ago.
I've seen so many of Charlie's videos and i almost never see any whites,no matter what neighborhood he films in
its cause the people here were put down through generational wealth gaps that have still not recovered today. Not to mention the sorry state of the education they barely receive. sad shit man, and i can only hope it gets better
jay fine exactly
You missed them in Kensington, Philly.
Poor white people live in rural areas rather than inner urban cities.

All theses videos amaze me tbh, I'm glad I'm from the suburbs but this is still intriguing, lowkey makes me want to do what this guy does.
Also does anyone notice in most of these "hoods" from the videos I never really see like stores, parks, schools, rec centers. My uncle always told me, " dont be bored because having nothing to do gets you into trouble"
These guys really have nothing to do
Ew suburbs
Sad,but touching the 70805 area is the worst in Baton Rouge I live on Chippewa and Acadian 🤦♀️🤦♀️🤦♀️its like a jungle sometimes I wonder how I keep from going under
Old Jefferson Highway by Long's Farm is kinda bad, and Baker by the Walmart. This was told to me by family who used to live in the area.

Hey. You should try Monroe, Louisiana.
It’s not too bad, I’ve driven through worse areas
He has actually done quite a few interviews with people in these hoods.
@@vooveks Ok thanks I just watched some of this video. I live between BR and NOLA along the River in a small town, but have also lived in NOLA. I’ve always tried to be part of the solution rather than part of the problem.
