  • The best Robin Hood swashbuckler ever. Which negates the necessity for a review, makes it redundant. There is no real need. Apart from, I wanted to do one. So, on a whim, that’s what I’ve done.

This is classic Hollywood film making at it's finest ! This film always is in my top five list of greatest movies of all time. You mentioned you never getting a chance to see it on the big screen , I have the luck of having the American Film Institute Theater in Silver Spring, Maryland a suburb of Washington D.C. near my home that runs classic films on the big screen all the time. When ever they can they will show Robin Hood and it does my heart good to watch the audience attendance sweal with not only fans my age but families bringing their children and grandchildren to watch this movie to pass on a love of this classic.

Some things are truly timeless, like great art. This is but one testament to that. Thanks for commenting, Keith, with some great personal background. Appreciated. T.

Beautiful. Thank you for sharing. I envy you. Our town's local Cinema burned down in the early 1970s, never to be rebuilt. How I wish we had what you have. Best Wishes.

That sword fight is probably the best ever. Rathbone was a great villain and yet a superb Sherlock Holmes. The whole cast was great.
They certainty don't make em like Errol anymore.

Thought I'd make an effort to do something worthwhile this year rather than my usual beer, curry and avoidance. I'll be doing those things as well - just about to make a start in fact. But meanwhile, I'm glad to see the four uploads hit the channel all at the same time as planned. I may never do it again, but you never know. Many thanks, Tom. T.

Great review again Tony. A gorgeous picture from the heyday of Hollywood that i remember watching on a wet Sunday age 10 with my Dad. Never forgot it and even made me a Robin Hood nerd having all the films and TV shows. Keep them coming mate or have a break.....who cares.....you do......so do we........lol

Your not the only one Abras that's a nostalgic one for me to and i still love it today. as a matter of fact i honestly believe that was not only the first disney movie i saw but the first movie i saw in my life period and not only that but whenever i've seen a live action adaptation of the Robin Hood tale i always find it odd when i see the iconic names "Maid Marian", Friar Tuck", "Little John", "Prince John" put to Human faces.

@@leeman8846 me too! I still remember watching the film at 6 a.m. at the peak of dawn, the world was silent and the film was almost over, good times☺💕

Still probably the greatest robin hood movie, robin and Marion 2nd, time bandits 3rd.
Tis genuinely an astounding movie of every department been on top form and Flynn before before the booze caught up. Ms de Havilland always a gorgeous screen presence and a great supporting cast.
Curtis a excellent director who understood what his audience wanted to see...truly brilliant.
Then we have it's modern iteration with taron Egerton a film so piss poor it's an insult to the legends of robin hood , with maid Marion straight off craggy island truly amazingly bad
    Another great review

I watched that Egerton film one evening when I was bored. I should have stuck with being bored. Sometimes, bored is better.

Hi Tony, I love this film. I feel like it was usually shown weekend afternoons and I always had a great time watching it. Amazing cast and the joy on screen is infectious. Classic cinema at it's finest. Regards.

Always scoured the Radio Times during holiday periods for showings of this, The Sea Hawk, Captain Blood and action/adventure fare generally. Unbeatable. T.

I hate to admit this but... Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves was my first and fave Robin Hood movie.
My parents are now rolling over in their graves after hearing that.

Ahhhh, that f***ing Bryan Adams song!!! Sorry, but the memory of that alone and Costner's mullet is enough. But in fairness, Rickman was a blast.

It's usually the first version of a story, or character that we see that remains our favorite. So, while I understand why the Costner film is your favorite, I'm going to include instructions to have a roasting spit built into my coffin with a motor to keep it turning.....once I'm skewered on it.

Great review. Errol was one hell of a unit. I wonder whether Basil was the inspiration for Dick Dastardly?
    Keep it up lad!

      Now Tony, behave yourself.

The beauty of Olivia de Havilland during this period is breathtaking. In color or B&W, she’s a radiant screen presence. She and Flynn made the perfect romantic couple in action films of the period. It is a shame balancing those two elements in a film has gone the way of the Dodo Bird.

A bankable Hollywood face once upon a time, who got shoehorned into roles for which he was often ill-suited. Although, Open Range is a terrific western with a manageable runtime. Way better than Dances With Dogs and Quiet Twerp.
