The music provokes very sad feelings but there is also a very sad story behind it. Arvo Part had always wanted to meet Benjamin Britten and saw him as the only composer he had something in common with. But since Estonia was under communist rule, Part could not visit Britten in the United Kingdom. The year Estonia opened up Britten had already died, thus Part wrote this composition as a sad memory for missing a friend just too late. :-(
Part says he became familiar with Britten’s work only shortly before Britten’s death in 1976. Getting hold of western music was difficult in Estonia. This was composed the following year in 1977.
“What kind of music is this? Whoever wrote it must have left himself behind at one point to dig the piano notes out of the earth and gather the artificial harmonics of the violins from heaven. The tonality of this music has no mechanical purpose. It is there to transport us towards something that has never been heard before.” Wolfgang Sandner
There are multiple versions of this work on UA-cam. As far as I can tell, this is the best. The strings are clear, and not muddled. The melody is the purest.
What a beautiful haunting piece of music that gives me chills every time I listen to it. It takes you on an emotional and gut-wrenching voyage but leads you to a peaceful ending. An amazing and unforgettable piece of music for your soul. I especially love this version. The conductor feels every note down in his soul. Thank you for giving us this truly wonderful performance.

Arvo Part has said of this work: “Inexplicable feelings of guilt arose in me. Just before his death I began to appreciate the unusual purity of his music… And for a long time I had wanted to meet Britten personally - and now it would not come to that.”
the phrasing, "and now it would not come to that" is like the exact kind of controlled falling a part grace that the music evokes, its like... it is the music, this music phrases loss like, and now it would not come to that. So differnet from saying, now it would not happen. It would not come to that tries to paint it like it was sort of a misshap, like it was on the way from happening but something in the process failed
With Arvo Pärt and Kristian Järvi two heavyweights in modern classic music met and the result outstanding! Surely up to composer’s expectations as up to mine! Absolutely fabulous, thanks!!!
I'd love to know how the musicians felt when they performed this... if they knew they were creating something that folks would return to again and again to enjoy and find comfort in/within. This is such an emphatic (definitive?) performance of this piece. Astonishing.
So moving. I have listened to several performances on YT and this my pick-although I wish the final bell-note had rung out a little more. Such intensity from the conductor. But if von Karajan were alive today he would say to Kristjan Järvi, as he did to a then-young conductor friend of mine, "Sehr gut. But they should be sweating, not you!" Indeed. some of them are.
Wow, marvelous performing of a great piece of music that represente the idea of Pärt to listen the music outside the time. I wish that never end. Congratulations from Mexico.
Remember them. Live the lives that they would have lived. Remember their love. Remember their joy. Remember them as they remember you. Giggling uncontrollably at something silly. And learn to forget.
Firstly this video should have 4m+ views. Secondly in my view or vision or music comprehension one of the most prominent Kristian Järvi performances. Finally my favourite Arvo Pärt composition at that time. Which superlatives to add more here?
These unbearable feelings of my own guilt linked to my dear human beings ,which fellings unspeakably deeply harrow me for so many decades and for ever are so sweetly uttered through this amazing musical work ,to which I shall be always truly beholden.

A lot of proud people and entitled people. Two things I do not like, void of feelings or failures. So they think anyhow.
The notes goes down all the time, from the sky to the earth. A way to say goodbye and a way to mourn.

This is a stirring performance! To see such a young group with this level of commitment gives me hope for the future.
I suspect such a young group have so many fears for their future that’s one reason they can perform like this.
