im still here is such a huge moment in culture not just for us brazilians but for all of latam, the similarities to other dictatorships are endless, and it shows women having to access this brutal part of motherhood that is portrayed beutifully by Fernanda's restraint and control, all while guiding the audience with her vision; one of my favorite scenes is the discussion of the siblings about the moment they had let go, taking us back to the girl staring at the house empty, its such a sensitive portrayal of grief
@@hugeasmammoth the scene at the ice cream place had me on tears, what a powerful scene. Torres shows us so much with only her eyes, it's absolutely incredible
@@hugeasmammoth And what a choice to end the movie with shots of the empty house, accompanied by that beautiful song by Erasmo Carlos. My god, I was devastated!!! P.S. It’s been mentioned in interviews that the house is portrayed in the film almost as its own character - one we see transition from a joyful, open, and lively place into something that is rather suffocating, with closed windows and no music anymore. Almost like the repressed feeling of grief that was stolen from them for so many years. So the power of those final credit images makes even more sense.
It’s so frustrating that this film isn’t coming out with english subs in my country until a week after the Oscars. From what I’ve read, this looks like a great film & Fernanda Torres has a brilliant story that puts her head to head with Demi Moore & Cynthia Erivo to get the Oscar.
So proud of Fernanda Torres' acting achievement, not only for Brazil but also as a reminder to never forget the horrors of the military dictatorship in our country.
I’d like to congratulate you on your reviews, all of which are extremely insightful and anything but superficial. I’m glad you enjoyed the story of Still Here; I share the same feelings and experience as you! Walter’s direction is brilliant, and Fernanda Torres’ performance is simply impeccable. As David Fear wrote for Rolling Stone, "To say that Torres digs into the role of Eunice Paiva would be an understatement." It’s a film that has so much to say and says so much with so few words...
Here in Brazil, we have a few people calling what happened in 1964 as a "revolution", which is an absolute abomination, since this was purely a massacre and a bloody piece of our story. I'm Still Here came to show everybody what really happened, how it feels to live in a dictatorship. And it's done with so much respect. I hope this movie gets all awards and recognition it deserves. We cannot rewrite the story with lies, for the truth is the most important thing we have.
I'm Brazilian, and of course, rooting for Fernanda and I'm Still Here. However, if it's meant to be different, I'd love to see Demi and The Substance being awarded.
I DON"T UNDERSTAND HOW "A REAL PAIN" and "AS WE IMAGINE AS LIGHT" were not best picture nominees but EMILIA IN PARIS is ?? It pissed me off that Award shows are so out of touch with general public opinions and how people actually feel about movies.
Great video! I saw Sing Sing the day before nominations with the thinking that it would be nominated for Best Picture but alas… I still need to see Nickel Boys and I’m Still Here
I'm so glad to find someone else who also really enjoyed the Substance and Conclave, they were both fun with a deeper darker message but overall were still a great experience I went back to catch again at the cinema whilst I could. Obviously given my childhood and Gamer™ status, Sonic 3 was my favourite movie of last year, that notwithstanding, my top 3 would definitely be the Substance, Dune II and Conclave. My main disappointment of these Oscars, outside of the obvious Emilia Perez glazing, was Look Back getting robbed in best animation (Inside out 2 was good, but I think Look Back deserved it more) If you haven't seen it, it's an anime adaptation of a One-shot by the visionnary and revolutionary mangaka Tatuski Fujimoto about 2 young girls discovering the joy of drawing and what it means to make art, it's about an hour long and is absolutely worth the watch imo, even if you don't have a habit of watching anime
While I still need to watch several of these films, I’m so happy someone else wants The Substance to win Best Picture, this film is so unique & shocking, I really hope it wins every single Oscar it’s up for.
I will say that Brady Corbet did utilize Guy Pearce pretty well. Most directors only play him as charming or villainous and don’t know that he used to do comedies also. I just saw The Brutalist and a lot of Guy Pearce’s lines got chuckles from the audience (worryingly?). I agree though, The Substance was the best film last year and in a just year would win best picture. It would literally have to break 10+ years of trends to do so though.
i really REALLY dislike the plot twist in Conclave. to have this and Emilia Perez released (and acclaimed) in the 2020s is WILD. they are exactly like The Crying Game and The Silence of the Lambs, and you could only enjoy those movies in 1993.
Ok, who are you and why hadnt I heard from you before? You're hands down the best movie critic on UA-cam. Talk about talking sense. As for the films, I havent watched them all but I feel "I m still here" is such an important movie for the times we're living. And if Fernanda Torres doesnt win, she's been robbed
You should checkout the other Bob Dylan biopic Todd hayne’s 2007 I’m Not There. It captivated the entire essence of Bob Dylan who’s played by 7 different people it’s really good
Maybe it's just because I had somewhat high and specific expectations going in (in part due to your review lol), but I unfortunately didn't feel much for Conclave. I really wanted it to either lean more into the campy, gossipy tone or to fully commit to being a serious thriller, instead of landing on, at least for me, pretty mild and not super engaging story. I didn't feel super connected to any of the characters, especially Isabella Rossellini's, I don't see what other people are seeing in that character at all. Like, subtext is one thing and I think the character is really compelling in theory but I found her to be very underwritten. I was likewise really underwhelmed by the twists. Given what we know about the Catholic Church, the "grand conspiracy" felt really tame, the "winner" felt really predictable to me, and the ultimate final twist about the winner felt very uneventful and uninformative about the character, which I guess was the point but it really didn't make me feel anything. I don't know, maybe my opinion will improve on a rewatch and I really wanted to like it, I can even kind of see what other people are getting out of it, I loved reading the Letterboxd reviews and I'm happy for everyone else, it just really didn't do much at all for me.
i’m so sad you didn’t like it as much but honestly I totally see your points. I just was very engrossed in the atmosphere so even the smallest bit of “gossip” felt like a big revelation so perhaps that’s why I liked it so much. Thank you so much for watching the video. I hope you liked it!
I also disliked Emilia Perez but more than that I hope people actually watch it and form their own opinions rather than reiterating what others are saying in thinkpieces etc
Here's the thing tho, at least in what respects to Latinoamerica, the movie production and themes are truly problematic. It Is important to form your own opinion, but it Is also important to educate oneself on the contexts of the polemics, that's why the thinkpieces are important
Lol "I though Bob Dylan died years ago" hahahahahhaha not a big fan, I guess. I'm not There is a great biopic about Bob Dylan. Cate Blanchett and 5 other actors play him.
I watched half of the movies and I like the roster a lot. I gotta feeling I'll adore Nickel Boys (1st person?!?!) but my thoughts on the half: Dune is sci-fi excellence, The Substance is peak body horror with the most ambitious 3rd act, Wicked is a solid musical where Cynthia/Ariana got nominated on their singing alone, Conclave has all the makings of Oscar bait but it's beautifully shot, acted and engaging. The drip alone! Anora was pretty funny but Mikey really dominates this movie even through the vastly different acts. I would be happy if 1) The Substance, 2) Dune or 3) Conclave wins right now

Fabulous video girl. I want The Substance to win so bad so the Academy can finally get over their horror prejudice and award horror as it should be.
