      @@mel4975The Academy creams their jeans whenever black, feminist, or LGBTQ themes are the central focus. I guarantee you if Toni Collette had given the EXACT same performance in "Hereditary" playing a mother whose gay child was a victim of a hate crime or who had to fight against a misogynistic cult she would've gotten a nomination.

    Naomi Scott blew me away. I thought her performance absolutely should be recognized. It’s a sin that horror film performances aren’t celebrated. I will never get over Tony Colette - Hereditary and even Florence Pugh -midsommar not being nominated for those performances.

      Naomi carried that movie more than the actress who embodied "Rose " in the original...The first film was all over the place...2 is a heavily centered story, eerily dipping between mind and reality

    • @SomethingSomethingg
      @SomethingSomethingg 11 днів тому +1

      It's because none of these movies had anything to do with black people being oppressed, gay people being oppressed, or women being oppressed. It's honestly that simple. That's what the academy is obsessed with nowadays. If you want your horror film to get anywhere close to Best Picture it HAS to have a glaring political message like in "Get Out" and "The Substance".

    You know what, Brian? I wouldn't rule out Saoirse Ronan for a nomination at all. Sure, she didn't get in anywhere expect at Bafta but the Academy obviously loves her judging from her past nominations. Also, if the votes are split between Jolie, Kidman, Torres and Anderson, some voters may think ' you know, let's give the nod to Ronan for her amazing job in The Outrun' at the end of the day. And there is the precedent with Javier Bardem from 2011. He only got the Bafta nod and then he was still nominated for the Oscar for Biutiful. So it happens occasionally:) Go, Saoirse!

    Big yes for Naomi Scott! Wow, what a powerhouse performance. With the exception of the opening scene, she was pretty much in every frame of the movie. But like you said, not only does she have horror bias working against her, but sequel bias. Another similarly intense horror performance that should have been recognized by Oscar a few years back was Samara Weaving in Ready or Not. Both Naomi and Samara had to pitch their performances at an 11 for pretty much the entire runtime of their films...no easy feat.

    I don't think agree with Eydelstein instead of Borisov. Eydelstein has the flashier performance but he never has to show emotional depth, Borisov shows several kinds of emotions, he looks like the typical henchman but he acts so much with his eyes and with his delivery. I compare his performance to Casey Affleck's in Manchester by the sea, that was very subtle as well.

    I wish more awards voters and critics would be like you -- make picks based on what impressed them the most, instead of basing their decisions on they think others would choose. The awards season would be so much more exciting and more films/performances would get a chance to share the wealth, if we could just do away with this mob-thinking mentality.

    A Real Pain snubbed but not A Complete Unknown is really surprising but I think original screenplay is really passionate for you and it shows by your choices.
    Monica Barbero was in Top Gun Maverick so she’s slowly coming up but this was another step in the right direction for her.

    I never really thought that deep about it but Kieran Culkin probably should be up for lead actor in A Real Pain and not Supporting. But also shouldn't Hugh Grant be a Supporting actor for Heretic

    Speaking of horror at the Oscars, I’d like to give my two cents with that. I was glad David Dastmalchian won at Fangoria in 2024 (I voted for him!). In an ideal world, I’d nominate him for a Best Actor in a Leading Role Academy Award because he WAS Jack Delroy in Late Night With the Devil. I couldn’t imagine anyone else in that role. I like old TV and I think he was really believable as a ‘70s talk show host. Not only that, but he consistently nails emotion. It never seems like he’s acting, he’s just there existing in those cinematic worlds. The passion is never lost. Dastmalchian is more known as a character actor in secondary roles, but he absolutely nailed his mainstream leading role in Late Night and gave, in my eyes, what is one of the greatest modern horror performances.

    I think after BAFTA noms, Sing Sing is getting a little bit pushed back into the conversation. I’m confident it will be in the 10 for picture.

    Was Red Rocket on your Oscar ballot back in 2019 ? That was Sean Bakers last film and I think that film is super underrated. It’s hard not to root for Sean Baker because you can tell he loves what he does and he’s not doing it for fame and none of his films have a big budget or any big actor minus Willem Dafoe in The Florida Project but man does he cast for perfection. He tells these original realistic stories that you can see actually happening and none are boring. He takes simple stories and makes them super entertaining.

    I don't really get why Paramount did not campaign Naomi Scott in Smile 2, she could've been a dark horse this season, they put all their cards in Gladiator II and not even performing well 😂 but I'm glad she won in the ASTRAs for Best Performance in a Horror/Thriller ❤️

      Perhaps they should have named the movie "Smiles"...with the title "Smile 2", that movie was already relegated to the generic horror movie bin on the awards circuit people's minds.
