    I'm really appreciating the irony of perfectly refinishing the guitar to repair a scratch, and then proceed to meticulously scratch up the new finish! Looks fun though! Great video!

    Very nice work. I did notice some things that are red flags that tell me that it is not genuine, but it will probably fool some. For example, the lacquer chips would have a smooth transition, and the pickup covers would have more wear from the strings, palm muting, etc. A thinned mist coating of clear lacquer on the body would help smooth it out.

    So going by the video description, I've gathered that the guitar here is a Les Paul Classic? I'm curious because that really huge control cavity route was unfamiliar to me. I'm used to the routing for an R9, or original 50's models. Is that how they route the cavity on all of the Gibson USA production models? Is the bottom of the cavity angled to match the top? Sorry, the geeky builder in me finds this stuff super interesting, haha.

    Fantastic attention to detail on rounding off and making the worn finish areas seamless to the rest.. truly looks like 70 years of wear.. QUESTION? when working with acetone either stripping finish or working to dull the finish.. how do you prevent unwanted reaction with the ABS binding? i thought acetone melts ABS very quickly.. especially when removing finish? perhaps you are taping off the binding in this case? cheers!

    • @8BombCustom
      @8BombCustom  3 роки тому +1

      Hey. Thank you. This is a common question I get asked. Indeed, the binding is softened by acetone. But if you work carefully, then problems can be avoided. After drying, the plastic becomes hard again. It does not make sense to cover the binding with masking tape, since acetone will dissolve the glue, the tape will come off, and the dissolved glue from the tape will penetrate into the plastic and change its properties on the surface.

    That looks incredible but i am surprised to see you did not Recess the pickguard screw like Gibson did in the 50's?
    The screw for the metal bracket that the guard attaches to is countersunk into the guard some and not flush with the pickguard on old 59's.

    Around 1982 or so I went down to 48th street in Manhattan N.Y. looking to buy a strat. I was given one piece of advice, ask for a pre-cbs. When I got there, I was told all the stores on the block were sold out, some Japanese businessmen went from store to store buying every pre-cbs strat they had. I tell this story because I'm sure they bought all the best conditioned, best looking guitars they could find. The truth is, most guitars aren't as beat up and battered as the heavy relic jobs that are done these days. I have no objection to what you did in this video, you are being honest to the guitar you are duplicating. But most people who play guitar take care of their instruments, yes, over the years, dings, bumps, scratches happen. It's called honest wear. I'll leave the heavy relics alone.

    The early les paul classic 1960's are great candidates for these makeovers. If you get a plus or premium top then there you go. And 91-93 are solid mahogany backs. I have a 91 and its amazing. Also, if anyone wonders why a true historic gibson costs so much...look at the labor hours that goes into something like that...Geez.
