As kids we used to buy slap chips, with salt & vinegar (at a proper fish & chips shop), enjoying it there & then, with a pint of milk, sitting on the pavement😋

@@barroompoet Remember those battery operated delivery vans early in the morning, taking your empty milk bottles with coupons (sometimes money if your coupons ran out), delivering to your doorstep, even juice ?

Been in Canada for 42 years. Grew up on slap chips. Cant remember where i bought them but when i went to visit my family in SA the first night was a slap chip and russian meal to welcome us to SA. The place we always bought slap Chips from Paulies on linksfield rd and first ave in Edenvale. Tastes fantastic.
Thanks for sharing that story! Now that I think of it, North American fries tend to be crispy, not "slap". Perhaps a marketing opportunity?

There was another book "the rabbit in the thorn tree" about south african urban legends. The lead story was about the move from Barclays to FNB.

As children, we got slap chips from the corner cafè, wrapped in brown paper, with plenty salt and vinegar. Delicious 😊
Yum! Ours was wrapped in what used to be called "butcher paper".
My special Pozi for slap chips was in Evander. In the 80s I was in aTechnical College there, during our lunch break we used to go to a nearby small Portugese take away shop that sold Slap Chips. The Owner topped the chips with tomato and chilli ketchup it was an epic combination I can still taste it in my mind all these years later. I think the chilli may have been peri peri. I have had the good fortune to eat Peri Peri chicken in Portugal washed down with on cask ice cold Super Bock beer. Life is good

Sixty years ago, the fish and chip shops were run by Portugues. It was heaven 5c chips and a sputnik.
Help me out, please. I'm not familiar with the term "sputnik".

OMG, I'm salivating ... this is my absolute favourite "junk food", especially on road trips! David, who cares about a slightly greasy steering wheel! 🤣 I like mine chips slightly crispy, with salt, vinegar and definitely, 'martoe sauce! Have you tried an Akhalwaya's slap chips salad sandwich? OMG, now that's to die for! Bon appetite 🤩

@@barroompoet Lenasia is where I first experienced their chips salad sandwich. Their Woodmead Retail Centre branch was the most convenient, just as yummy. Ask for a dash of masala - it adds a tiny bite! Totally delicious .... enjoy 🥰
I see there are several branches around Jozi now ... look them up online to find one closest to you. Otherwise, a trip to "Lenz" is a worthwhile experience - I believe that's their original deli. Of course, they also make great curries, samosas etc.

When I was pregnant 23years ago, all I craved was slap chips and I ate them everyday. I still absolutely love them....even having it as a complete meal❤😋🤣 there's nothing better during Joburgs Autumn and Winter.

As a student nurse at Woodstock Hospital in the 70 s...Altona Fisheries on Woodatock Main Road was the place to go to after you received your monthly stipend...In actual fact, I think it is still there...😂

Slap-chips is Portugese, wrapped in newspaper linned with brown paper, it was to make a lot from a little mostly by poor people. French fries are match sticks made in France. BIG DIFFERENCE.
Im Portuguese/South Africa 😊 did not know that. I make great chips at home, my Afrikaans hubby saysthey are the best.

Cool saying. 👍 The Kalkies food is great, but as an exiled Capetonian, I prefer some of the less "touristy" fish&chip shops. There was one near the old 3 Arts theatre that fed me throughout my student days.

Love slap chips! By the way,, I love your car too! I had a Toyota MK2 bakkie way back in early 70's. The most enjoyable vehicle I ever had! You will remember those days when petrol was not available over weekends - At that time my fianc'e was working in Swellendam and I was in Prieska, I modified my bakkir to run on butane gas. With two bottles of gas on the back, a full tank and the legal 10 L of extra fuel I could visit her over weekends! Unfortunately I had to sell the bakkie when we married!
We are still married and I still have the gas regulater that I made for the bakkie. How many miles has your car done?

I absolutely love slap tjips, but you can only eat that much. I will never throw th leftovers away. It makes the lekkerste tjip soup. Some boiled water and mayonaise and cook it a bit and ... try it.
