The underlying mechanism between oil imports and battery imports is different. Oil is a financial commodity like dollar, rupee which is traded in exchanges. The barrel price is what is paid by OMC‘s and the Arab nations have a monopoly on the pricing. Similar is not the case with batteries. Battery being a spare part for a car manufacturing firm is a supplier commodity for an industry. Firms which have better bargaining power can buy batteries at lower cost and keep a check on the dollar outgo. Moreover, market mechanism and competition can always keep the battery prices competitive for a buyer considering multiple buyers and multiple sellers. So,although like many mentioned in the comments that India can start indigenous battery development, which would take some time for headstart, the prices of battery are not uncontrollable like prices of crude. Hence there can be substantial savings in dollars.

The complacency that the VGA group is showing in bringing their international portfolio to a mass market like India needs to be emphasized more and more. Not only them, it is valid to many other mainstream players like Toyota, Kia, Honda, etc. We all know the same was the case of Ford India, which is why they had to leave our country. It's really really high time that these companies need to think about this and introduce their good products to us very sooner.

We will end up having only homegrown brands like Mahindra and Tata being the only choices after a decade or so, maybe some Chinese manufacturers with local investors will survive as well😊 Quality control will take a hit though

You are right most of the manufacturers try to sell with cosmetic changes, Ford was one among them see what happend to them same will happen to VW and Skoda. India is very competitive market with the tax which was one of the reason why everyone increased the cost around 20% or more still they are giving these basic products. May be these companies are thinking if they are not able to sell something in Europe they can try it here. Indian manufacturers are the ones giving more models others are just doing timepass in India. I believe EV is not worth taking all the effort. It is not environmental friendly considering battery manufacturing recycling etc not cost effective for someone using around 10k KM per year as reselling after 5 years will eat up all the profit from fuel savings.

Yes, Indians deserve better. We are a value sensitive market and anyone who provides that value will be rewarded. Tata and Mahindra are prime examples of the same. Maruti I strongly believe, is a representative of the conservative nature and fear of the older generation of customers in our country and the scenario will evolve in favour of Kia, Tata and Mahindra in the future, simply because the next generation of buyers will be driven by aspirations rather than fear.
Škoda, VW and other companies can keep on complaining, but inability to succeed in a market like this certainly points to their lack of ability.
And Jimny, nannaayathe ollu. The value of all products are a function of the price they retail for. If India’s greatest car manufacturer is not willing to suffer some losses on the only product in their catalogue that caters to a stable enthusiast, all I can say is ‘ninnod okke daivam choikkuveda’.

My friend is thinking of buying a Maruti 800. We have come across one of sufficient goodness but the problem is that it retails a mileage of only about 11 to 13 kmpl. The owner tells us that this happens because the car is old.
I was rewatching and old talking cars video where you both were talking about how the Maruti 800 may not be as fuel efficient in the past. What does this mean? That cars become less and less efficient due to wear and tear or what was considered a respectable mileage in that year is now nowhere close to the industry standard?

Vivekji very pertinent points have been discussed here. One goes through a very agonising phase when the car you bought a year ahead is offered at a discount, as in this year by as much as 1-2 lakhs on the electric cars, and even on the Jimney which was very highly priced, thus selling in very few numbers. Another point raised by the availability of different models of VW and Skoda or even companies like FIAT, FORD in the countries abroad - whereas there companies mentioned dish out the limited models that they do to us, probably indicating that the huge market in India doesnt deserve a better choice or options. This is again very sad. the JSW-MG collaboration hopefully would bring in many more small car models which are better built and fun to drive. It is appreciable that the JSW boss is aspiring to bring in a lot more cars into our country through this alliance with the Chinese company. Yet another point that you raised is of electric cars where the battery is a huge money drain for the nation - in the developed countries there are many cars on the road which are hybrids and less of pure electric ones. In fact hybrid cars come in three forms, which many may not be aware of - probably you need to educate the car enthusiasts regarding this matter too. Thanks for the episode which just went off like a breeze with a fresh feeling brought in by a commentary which was punctuated with a whole lot of jocular moments in the form of extracts from movie dialogues as well. I completely agree about last point chinna comments. I had initially considered buying an electric vehicle (EV) next, but I soon realized that from a fuel-saving perspective, it's not worth it.

I won’t be worried about depending on battery imports for long. EV industry is at its nascent stage in India. We are already seeing huge investments in making battery manufacturing across the country by multiple companies. And we do have lithium and similar raw materials. So within this decade, we will see rapid fall in prices of EV batteries. This is not just coz of Indian plants coming online, but heavy investments in China leading to reducing prices similar to how solar panels have become cheaper. So we won’t have to wait much longer for a scenario where EV cars will be cheaper than their ICE counterparts…imagine Punch EV cheaper than Punch petrol model..that will be revolutionary…and petrol price will only keep going up…and for those whiners who keep saying EV uses power from fossil fuels and is still polluting, the renewables share in Indian power sector has been going up for a while now. And will only increase from here.

EV's are just a stop gap solution in my perspective. A use and throw solution. Won't have as much resale value as an ice automobile would I believe, let's see in the upcoming years.
Unless carbon neutral fuels arrive to the world (waiting to been seen in F1 racing and what it will be in real) the alternate fuel debate will keep on going between EV, Hydrogen and even H2O !
