I think George would have been better off to let them improvise scenes considering Portman is an Oscar winner and Hayden was a golden globe runner up. Plus they actually dated at the time so he should have let them do their own thing.
He actually did let them improvise some of the scenes, like the “Aggressive Negotiations” lines in the Geonosian Arena.

Sad to say they killed her character
Their romance was a bit creepy in the 2nd part. When he keeps making advances despite several rejections. In Part 3, they have a wonderful man and wife chemistry.

I didn't think the two were well-matched...at all. But, apparently, others do. In fact, if there was anything about their films together that I did not like was the fact that a romantic relationship was even suggested. But, I'm glad it worked for some people.
