  • In this video, I share my favorite record album titles. This time, it's not about the music or the artwork or the sound quality, just the title of the albums.

Great selections! Not many can pronounce that Dead album title…I sure can’t. Live at Cook County is a good album, so is Night hawks. My fave title is Lowell George’s “Thanks, I’ll Eat it Here”.

"Intensities In 10 Cities", which also happens to be one of my all-time favorite album titles, is one of the few live albums that is not a "greatest hits live" package but a collection of previously unreleased songs recorded live in concert. That's why none of the hits are there. Ten songs, each one recorded in a different city, hence the album title. Not a huge favorite of mine, but I like it. Guitar World magazine placed it at the 9th spot in their "10 of the best live albums every rock fan needs to hear" list.
Two other album titles that I love are Rush's "Moving Pictures" because of its triple entendre with the cover and back cover art, and Frank Zappa's "Ship Arriving Too Late to Save a Drowning Witch", because that's what the minimalistic drawing on the album cover represents.

Zero Tolerance For Silence - A great album title from Pat Metheny. But the worst album I've ever heard. It's astounding how anybody could be that good, yet produce such drek.
Physical Graffiti - A great title, great cover, and great music
I googled weird album titles. I found one I think you'll like. Thomas Dolby - Aliens Ate My Buick.

    Some of my favorites:
The Cramps - Bad Music For Bad People
Spacemen 3 - Taking Drugs To Make Music To Take Drugs To
Black Sabbath - We Sold Our Souls For Rock N Roll
Butthole Surfers - Hairway To Steven (I could include most of their album titles)
Dinosaur Jr - You're Living All Over Me
A Tribe Called Quest - The Low End Theory
Agoraphobic Nosebleed - Frozen Corpse Stuffed With Dope
Big Black - Songs About F***ing
The Dwarves - Blood, Guts, and P****
My favorite Flaming Lips title is Hit To Death In The Future Head. In A Priest is my favorite of their albums.

    Some personal favorites:
"You Bought It -- You Name It" by Joe Walsh (Is it any good? I've never heard it)
"Psonic Psunspot" by The Dukes Of Stratosphear
"A Woofer in Tweeter's Clothing" and "Kimono My House" by Sparks
"Our Personal Favorite World-Famous Hits" by Daniel Amos (Never heard of them? That's why the title is funny)

Talk about back skipping jukeboxes, in the Seventies at college, there was a Seeburg machine in the Student Union snack bar that repeated "Misty Blue" by Dorothy Moore. There was always some joker in the crowd who deliberately picked the tune. It was a nice song, but not fifteen times in a row. Problem solved by unpluging the jukebox.

Another jukebox story, back in the late 60’s we used to eat at this White Castle in Jersey City. They had these mini jukebox’s on the counter. The b side of Sunshine of your Love “SWLABR” would stick right in the instrumental section of the song. We would play it and sit there eating and watch as one by one people would realize something was wrong. It would go on for 5 to 10 minutes sometimes.

An album title that always make me laugh when I hear it (or think of it to be honest) is Marilyn Manson’s “Smells Like Children.” I suppose it is one that works a bit better if you see the cover art, which is hilariously weird. And I know Marilyn Manson is on the cancel list now. But since I was never a listener of his, I don’t care.

LOL, yeah, snotty is a great word that needs to be brought back. Combine it with another favorite word of mine - snotty git. I prefer the Grateful Dead's album title Steal Your Face, although that recording has generally been plagued by sibilance. I think my favorite Zappa album title is Waka Jawaka. I just love saying it. Have he run out of of comedy material? The hot sause, covered in whip cream, and Twas The Night Before Christmas poem wasn't bad. Whatever became of the Jeff Wicher videos? He really put a lot into them with his Deep Dives. I guess it's hard to average tens of thousands of views on here. It helps if you are a good looking woman. Lp collectors need 5,000 lps as much as they need 5,000 scissors. Only having just one lifetime don't cut it. They need more lifetimes to listen to all those lps they foolishly bought, enough times to really get into them.

    Van Halen - Fair Warning
Rolling Stones - Exile On Main St. (They were also great with alliteration, like Between The Buttons and Beggars Banquet)
    Neil Young - Ragged Glory
The Fall - This Nation's Saving Grace
    Nirvana - Bleach
    Tad - God's Balls
Flaming Lips - Hear It Is (also Clouds Taste Metallic)

The Rain Parade title came from these little yellow plastic signs you see in the BART train stations in the San Francisco Bay Area. Something to do with the third rail of the train. Matt Piucci got it directly from that. And that Ted Nugent album (which I've also never heard) is like REM's New Adventures in Hi-Fi. It's an album of all new material recorded live on tour, hence none of the classics.
[Edit: looks like someone beat me to that last great nugget of knowledge!]

Don't you just love it when there's an album title you like for reasons you simply can't explain? Those are my favorites.
Here are some that I like (warning - long list):
-Green Day: "1,039 / Smoothed Out Slappy Hours"
-Red Hot Chili Peppers: "Return of the Dream Canteen" and "The Uplift Mofo Party Plan"
-Blink-182: "Take Off Your Pants and Jacket" 🛫👖🧥
    -R.E.M.: "Automatic For The People"
-Pavement: "Slanted and Enchanted" and "Terror Twilight"
-Yo La Tengo: "I Am Not Afraid Of You And I Will Beat Your Ass" and "New Wave Hot Dogs"
-Sonic Youth: "Experimental Jet Set, Trash and No Star"
-The Fall: "Hex Enduction Hour" and "Live at the Witch Trials"
    -Oasis: "Definitely Maybe"
    -Blur: "Modern Life is Rubbish"
-The Verve: "A Storm in Heaven"
    -Metz: "Up On Gravity Hill"
    -The Chats: "Get F*cked"

Another fun fact about that same album - supposedly, to save costs it was recorded over the master tapes of another Sonic Youth album (I believe it was "Sister"). Apparently, its quiet production means you can still hear parts of the old album in some places!

Going back to when I was just a kid. I always thought Razamanaz by Nazareth was silly sounding. Maybe that's why I liked that over Hair Of The Dog.
Another good one to bring up at a party is Oh No! It's Devo. Like suddenly the party became a huge let down by having Devo show up to ruin everyones fun.
Thinking Fellers Union Local 282 have some bizarre names as well. My favorite is Wormed By Leonard. Like, what? But nothing tops their last album title. Just like that one you mentioned. It's just weirdness and way too long. Guess its more known as Bob Noodle. But the entire title is way too long. Of course I will get it wrong here...Larry & Bob Noodle Presents The Whatever The Hell They Called This Album And The Dirt Brown Band.
Not sure if video albums count, but how can you go wrong with Pussy Galore's Maximum Penetration? That even tops their album Dial M For Motherf***er (just incase)
But, and speaking of Butt. How about Butthole Surfers Electriclarryland. Or the censored cover with B***H*** Surfers instead. Never knew about it until I saw it on Letterman when they played Pepper. Because Dave showed the alternate cover to it.
You Axed For It - The Mentors
Death Won't Solve Your Problems - No Trend
The Amazing Underwater Adventures Of Aqua Kitty And Her Friends - Heavy Vegetable
    Can't Stand - The Rezillos
The Third Reich & Roll - The Residents
668 The Neighbor Of The Beast - My Dog Popper
Cancer Planet Mission - Gaye Bikers On Acid
Something Green And Leafy This Way Comes - S.N.F.U.
Give Me Convenience Or Give Me Death - Dead Kennedys
Experimental Jet Set, Trash & No Star - Sonic Youth
Stairway To Hamilton - B.A. Johnston

Great idea for a post! I can't believe REO's "You Can Tune A Piano..." didn't make your list. But seriously, folks . . .
Re: Intensities in 10 Cities, it would have been repetitive to include most of the hits you mentioned, as they'd just been on his Gonzo live album 3 years before. But agreed - great title.
    Other titles I like:
The Wonder Stuff - The Eight-Legged Groove Machine. Love this as a debut album title. Two albums later they'd add a 5th member, thus making the "8 Legged" part obsolete.
The Smiths - Meat Is Murder. It was just something that, at the time, made me wonder "what is that about", and made me want to hear it and find out. Pretty bold.
Two Kinks titles: (1) Face to Face - I just love the multiple possible meanings which could be applied to its collection of songs. It brought you face to face with the songs' various characters. Or, it was like a camera, moving from face to face of each of the characters. (2) Schoolboys In Disgrace - another title that just made me wanna get the album and find out what the hell it was about. The cover image didn't hurt either; any young boy coming across this one in the album racks thought "this looks like a pisser".

@@RobertFithen It won't make you forget "Tommy" or "The Wall" any time soon, but it is a clean, simple, entertaining narrative with some pretty good songs to boot (save one, "Education", which imo goes on way too long). Plus, it's semi-biographical, as it's based on when schoolboy Dave got his girlfriend pregnant. It also exposed barbaric British headmasters in song ("Headmaster", "The Hard Way") years before Pink Floyd or The Smiths did.

I’ve wondered about the title of Revolver. In my mind it’s a play on words. This was the time when the Beatles were changing their sound. I know people say they had two parts of their band history, but I’ve always thought of it as three; The early stuff, the later stuff and a small transitional two album period. The title Rubber Soul sounds like a beginning of a change. Change to the core.
They were still evolving when they put out Revolver. But their sound went deeper than Rubber Soul. They evolved there and when they went deeper they revolved (or evolved again) for the sound they were looking for. I think after the debacle with the “We’re more popular than Jesus…” remark by John, I think they just didn’t want to use the word evolve. Not a popular word in the Bible Belt.
I don’t know if that’s true or I just pulled that out of my butt, but that is my hypothesis.

Hi Robert, I dig your rants. My pals and I would go on like this back in the 20th century, which was a lot of fun. An album that reminds me of the early to mid 70’s the most is Rod Stewart’s, Never A Dull Moment from 1972 (I’m sure you’re probably familiar with this album). It was more organic than the T.Rex/Ringo big band boogaloo production style that was part of a lot of British music of that day. We would put this album on while working on the car in the yard, hearing great attitude from Ron Wood’s guitar. Anyways, appreciate the rants, keep them coming!
