Love my Brother SP1. It can do 8.5x14 in the back pass-through slot. And I don’t like dust to accumulate on my printers so I found a great cover for it.
I have been trying to decide which sub printer is right for me. I was wavering between the Epson F170 and Brother SP1. I'm glad you addressed the clogging issue. Crafting is a hobby and I will probably not be using the printer on a daily or even a weekly basis. I am concerned about the cost of the ink cartridges vs the refillable ink bottles, but it seems worth the extra money for the ink to have quality prints and easy set up. I am proficient using the Adobe Creative Cloud apps so printing from Photoshop shouldn't be an issue. Thank you for sharing this information.

I haven't had any issues with clogging. I have the et15000 and keep it powered on all the time. I hear the cartridges doing something atleast 2 times a day. It seems to me that it's doing some sort of ink or nozzle maintenance.

I have a question. Did you noticed how the top of the printer has a space to scan? I thought this printer has a scanner that covered up with the "lets get started" label, but I can't see anywhere mentioning about it.
Holy moly, I totally didn't realize that opened up and missed it entirely! Yes there's a scanner in there! This printer really could've used more instructions, ha!

I have two Epson printers; a 2803 that I converted to sublimation and the actual F170. My converted printer currently has a clog in 3 color lines and I have never gotten the colors to come out quite right though I know some people have no issues. My F170 has been fantastic. The ink longevity will depend on how often you’re using it but I will say the colors are amazing. You get enough ink in the bottles to do the initial fill and to do at least a partial refill (probably from about half to full?) though the black definitely runs out a bit quicker. I hope that helps a bit 😊

Ink usage will depend on the types of prints you are doing and the ink coverage. The F170 has bottles that are 140ml and the Brother has 48ml cartridges. So the Brother bottles are bigger and a little less expensive per color. But it really does take a long time to run through ink, no matter your printer!
@HeyLetsMakeStuff that was my question. Pattern for pattern, do the cartridges go further than the bottles mililter to mililter??? The expense seems to be much more for ink with the Brother. Otherwise I'm sold!

It really depends on the types of images you are printing since every image uses a different amount of each ink color. I've done about 15 projects so far, so not a huge number yet. But they are bigger cartridges than a Sawgrass, if that helps.

I have been using my printer pretty consistently since I made this video and I haven't had to swap ink. It really depends on how ink-heavy your prints are and what colors you are using. There's no way to say "it will print this many sheets."
I have a question when I use the app and download my design it takes forever to resize my design I have to keep clicking the up or down arrow to make bigger or small and it won't let me just type the size I want. Have you had this problem and if you just print directly from a file on my computer it doesn't let you choose print quality or type of paper, it's limited on what you can change..
So I never use the app, because it's just not designed well. I tend to use Silhouette Studio (free) or Photoshop when printing from my computer because I have more control over the sizing and then printer settings.

Just got this sublimatio printer and I really don't like using the Aspira. I haven't figure out yet how I can upload a design from a tablet. You stated you can use your computer. Do you have a video on this? I don't think I would use the cell phone because it is just too small for me and my old eyes. Thank you for doing this video. I hope I enjoy it. Althought I have Epson ET2720 the clogging was driving me crazy.
Enjoyed this review of the Brother SP1 sublimation printer. I'm planning on buying one around the end of Dec or first of January. I do wish you had printed a photograph as a second example to see how well the inks print detail work. And how will their ink holds up to laundering. But I didn't know brother had a sublimation printer. I' not into commercial or crafting for money so it being slow printing might not be a huge issue for me. I am not great with apps on phones for anything. So much so I do' not have a single app on my phone I ever downloaded to date. My cell is almost always turned off. So much so I have to get both our phones reactivated this coming week since turns out in fine print if you don't use every few months they deactivate your account. That despite having paid a full year in advance? Will living in a county that's 78 percent cell phone dead zone has it's unique challenges. Meantime maybe with some internal conversations I can talk myself into learning to use craft app's via phone. I bought a Joy earlier and as those with them know it has design software that goes with it too. I've watched a number of your videos and find all of them very helpful to understand products I have and like this one new introductions to those I don't have.
I will be doing more projects with the printer to show its range! I have a whole video on sublimating photos on the calendar, but not until into the new year. And you're not missing anything with the app, ha!

There is a setting in the print menu that mirrors automatically- if you have flipped your design horizontally it will reverse it if the box is checked 🤦♀️

I have a Brother Scan n Cut and an embroidery machine that can communicate with one another wirelessly. Any idea if there is something similar between the Scan n Cut and the printer? I love my Epson ecotank, but being able to use printer and cutting machine cooperatively might be a reason to switch. Or a reason to actually use Artspira rather than just sticking to Canvas. Like you said, I really can't seem to find any info on the printer.

What type of material (blend)did you use for the cloth? My husband just bought me this printer and im having a hard time finding the right materail for it to look as vibrant as yours did.
@HeyLetsMakeStuff At first, I used the shirt that came with the printer..then I wanted to get more creative and looked up a lot of different things I could use. Such as bleaching a shirt so it's colored but white in the middle. Where I can put the image on it. I understand that using a lower polyester thread will cause the image to be a little washed out. But the image is barely visable. When I see all the videos I have watched, it comes out great. I just need to figure out what im doing wrong . I'm getting a bit frustrated I'm not sure what to do. The 100% polyester is a bit to thin.
As shirt came with your printer? Was it 100% polyester? Sublimation really needs that polyester or poly coating to work-that's the whole science behind sublimation. There are lots of 100% poly options that feel more like cotton. I think Angie Holden has a video comparing a bunch of them! @@brittanygarner3554
I'm a long time Scan n Cut user. I love it, but Brother itself is just miserable about information and support. I've heard they're better about their sewing stuff but almost everything I've learned about my Scan n Cut has either been trial and error or UA-cam. Their website is next to useless. Also, they're a British company so often they don't have information about US version equipment. As for the app, it came out a couple of years ago and was...not awesome at first. It's considerably better than it used to be, but in no universe would I pay $13 a month for it yet. Their monthly newsletter always has Artspira updates so I assume it will continue to improve. You'll probably be waiting a while for a good sublimation section though. It sounds like I'm only criticizing Brother, but I really do love my Scan n Cut! And our laser printer is excellent too... Just frustrating that their support is so non existent
I figured their support wasn't the best when I couldn't learn almost anything about this printer online! And I agree with you about the app-definitely not paying for it!

Because this is a sublimation specific printer, there shouldn’t be any color management! My color was great right out of the box. I did see someone else was having issues with their blue, when printing from affinity (that comment is also under this video somewhere), but other than that, I haven’t seen any issues.
I have a new epson printer that I haven't set up for sublimation printing yet. What is the 'maintenance' that would need to be done? I do not do crafting every day, so am concerned when I set up the printer that I won't use it very often. Thank you!
What type of Epson? If it’s one that is not designed for sublimation, you should probably print out once a week. If it’s an Epson F170 or F570, you can print less often.

everyone can help me please, i just got my SP-1 brother printer. everytime i try to print tilt color or green doesn't comes out the right color, if i print green it print blue;(. i call brother customer service , still not printing green or tilt color. but the rest color are fine. is just the green color.
I meant to mention I agree the color works on the printer are a HUGE NO for me too! Brother usually keeps it understated and as a crafter I appreciate the companies who get not to do that. I feel they are showing me respect. HOWEVER with all the pretty vinyls and printable label materials out there it should be pretty simple to make your own designs to cover these blobs up and make it feel like it belongs in personal space. So it's not a complete deal breaker but there have been times I would walk over in my face logo or trying to hard to be seen designs on products that I expect to live with. I'm a natural neutral colors gal and this splashed mess isn't going to work. Brother I hope you remove them going on in future generations of this line of printers if your ears are on.
Not sure if you watched the video. But she said it prints too slow. Id rather go with the Epson. It prints faster, and it can print multiple designs faster then this brother printer. And the epson uses paper on a roll, and its wider for those 20 oz tumblers .

There are a lot of good brands and you can choose whatever you'd like! A-Sub, TexPrint, and Craft Express are my go-to brands.

Have you noticed when printing from Affinity the colors print a few shades lighter than it should. The Cyan prints like a Sky Blue.
I haven't tried it in Affinity! I no longer have a subscription to that program. Could you print from a different program?

I think they are both accurate, as long as you're running your Sawgrass prints through the Sawgrass software.

Laser paper is thinner than sublimation paper so it doesn't hold the ink the same way. I'd definitely use sublimation paper!
Can you only use Brother ink?
Yes, it takes only Brother ink cartridges. There may be overseas companies making dupes but I don't recommend them.
Do you know how to refill the ink? Do I need to buy new cartridges or can I buy a refill kit online. I saw new cartridges but they are $500 online.

Yes you can! You should be able to print directly from Publisher or export a PDF and print that :)

Nope, you can print from basically any program. I've print mostly from Photoshop or the Mac Preview.

They are not refillable -- they are $33 a cartridge.
What type of material (blend)did you use for the cloth? My husband just bought me this printer and im having a hard time finding the right materail for it to look as vibrant as yours did.

At first, I used the shirt that came with the printer..then I wanted to get more creative and looked up a lot of different things I could use. Such as bleaching a shirt so it's colored but white in the middle. Where I can put the image on it. I understand that using a lower polyester thread will cause the image to be a little washed out. But the image is barely visable. When I see all the videos I have watched, it comes out great. I just need to figure out what im doing wrong . I'm getting a bit frustrated I'm not sure what to do. The 100% polyester is a bit to thin.
As shirt came with your printer? Was it 100% polyester? Sublimation really needs that polyester or poly coating to work-that's the whole science behind sublimation. There are lots of 100% poly options that feel more like cotton. I think Angie Holden has a video comparing a bunch of them! @@brittanygarner3554
I'm a long time Scan n Cut user. I love it, but Brother itself is just miserable about information and support. I've heard they're better about their sewing stuff but almost everything I've learned about my Scan n Cut has either been trial and error or UA-cam. Their website is next to useless. Also, they're a British company so often they don't have information about US version equipment. As for the app, it came out a couple of years ago and was...not awesome at first. It's considerably better than it used to be, but in no universe would I pay $13 a month for it yet. Their monthly newsletter always has Artspira updates so I assume it will continue to improve. You'll probably be waiting a while for a good sublimation section though.
It sounds like I'm only criticizing Brother, but I really do love my Scan n Cut! And our laser printer is excellent too... Just frustrating that their support is so non existent
I figured their support wasn't the best when I couldn't learn almost anything about this printer online! And I agree with you about the app-definitely not paying for it!

I'm thinking about getting this printer but wondering about the ink cartridges. Can you refill them?
They are not refillable. They are $40 a cartridge, less than Sawgrass but more than the Epson F170.

Up to US legal-8.5 x 14.

Hi, I am starting my own store and this video was really helpful. Could you please elaborate the color management of this printer? Was it hassle free?
Because this is a sublimation specific printer, there shouldn’t be any color management! My color was great right out of the box. I did see someone else was having issues with their blue, when printing from affinity (that comment is also under this video somewhere), but other than that, I haven’t seen any issues.
What size do this printer print
It’s a letter size printer, but you can extend the tray and print legal as well.
I have a new epson printer that I haven't set up for sublimation printing yet. What is the 'maintenance' that would need to be done? I do not do crafting every day, so am concerned when I set up the printer that I won't use it very often.

What type of Epson? If it’s one that is not designed for sublimation, you should probably print out once a week. If it’s an Epson F170 or F570, you can print less often.

So if I print once a week but don't want to apply it, can I save the printout and apply later?

Yes! I use Cricut Design Space for all sorts of sublimation projects.
I can’t get my images vibrant! Help!
Are you pressing them to see the final color? They will look dull when printed.

everyone can help me please, i just got my SP-1 brother printer. everytime i try to print tilt color or green doesn't comes out the right color, if i print green it print blue;(. i call brother customer service , still not printing green or tilt color. but the rest color are fine. is just the green color.
When you press it the heat activates the colors. So the color will come out green.
Have you tried a test press? Sometimes the colors don't appear as vibrant on the paper as they do when pressed.
I removed the crazy stickers, very easy to do. Now my printer is just white.

I meant to mention I agree the color works on the printer are a HUGE NO for me too! Brother usually keeps it understated and as a crafter I appreciate the companies who get not to do that. I feel they are showing me respect. HOWEVER with all the pretty vinyls and printable label materials out there it should be pretty simple to make your own designs to cover these blobs up and make it feel like it belongs in personal space. So it's not a complete deal breaker but there have been times I would walk over in my face logo or trying to hard to be seen designs on products that I expect to live with. I'm a natural neutral colors gal and this splashed mess isn't going to work. Brother I hope you remove them going on in future generations of this line of printers if your ears are on.

Why complain about the graphics? They have nothing to do with the performance of the printer.
I just don't like them. I wish it was white like every other printer I have. Aesthetics are important to me.
Brother sublimation printer is a BIG no for me now. Rather keep looking

Not sure if you watched the video.
But she said it prints too slow. Id rather go with the Epson. It prints faster, and it can print multiple designs faster then this brother printer. And the epson uses paper on a roll, and its wider for those 20 oz tumblers .

Cartridges. This printer is cartridge-based, not ink-tank based.

Oh -- I am not sure, honestly! I think these have just the cartridges they come with and I don't know if they are refillable.
