What a journey! I was sitting on the world record throne for a long time now, but to see someone actually made the weeklong effort to try and beat the record with a faster strategy fills me with joy. Thank you for the shoutout and congratulations for the stunning achievement! And I'll see if I can take the crown back.
*Update Post* It didn't take a week to change the whole speedrun meta. The leaderboard is currently dominating by three runs with three different methods. 1. Channel / Lightning Serpent - 26 sec. Soul crushing, indeed. Like ramping into a Soul Shatter in cEDH just when the strongest decks get their commanders out LOL. Gosh that card is the best designed, best removal of all of commander. only thing that brings more satisfaction is slaughter pacting a phage then reanimating her with platinum angel and not paying slaughter pact's upkeep cost the next turn. THAT UNSUMMON WAS PRICELESS. LITERALLY HAD ME GOING LIKE "HE DID IT! HE DID IT!" 😵😭 lol
Slight improvement: you could see the former record is holding the land card while waiting for their turn, this would speed up the draw animation actually :). Also that is super useful when playing Arena normally.
People rope/grief endlessly on Arena: WotC is clueless about what they could ever do to stop such abuses. Phil abuses the shit out of Sparky: WotC takes immediate action to address a very real problem affecting very real AI.
There are things I expect from this channel: Seth not being able to pronounce words Krim not being able to read cards Phil not being able to keep arena from crashing to shenanigans. The breakdown of the insanity grind that is speedrun routing and using brute force to get acceptable RNG is not one of them. This was beautiful to watch.
That same day someone got a 26s Damn, the speedrunning community is something XD Turn 1 Forest into Elvish Mistic (perfect sparky RNG, only plays a forest) Turn 2 Channel > Mountain into Lightning Serpent with X=19(only 18 is needed, but its faster clicking +5 x4 then -1 so you dont die) > Attack for lethal
WE'RE NOT WORTHY!! Phil, you're a legend. The play; the creativity; the focus; the persistence... but to do all of that and make it into a great, entertaining video?! I think just 2 weeks before the end of the year we just saw THE magic moment of the year.
With Brothers War, Charbelcher looks like the next strat to try! Channel into belcher into belcher activation is just 3 actions, doable on turn 2 and skips the need for attack animations.
Hilarious approach at MTG. That Unsummon of Sparky made me laugh out so hard though, sorry. Has something wholesome about it, that even lil' Sparky can ruin the most evil wizard's perfect hand with a good ol' alpha common.
Phil you are probably my favorite MTG creator and quickly becoming one of my favorite creators in general. Love the video! Combining MTG and speedruns was amazing.
Incredible Job again Phil, I've been waiting and waiting for the next video. I can totally see why. Genuinely addicted to your content. Keep it up, the dedication show and I can't stop.
Yknow, I was thinking about when there was going to be another arena video with Phil, but now I see what took him so long: hours and hours of conceding and re-joining 😂 you’re the best Phil
This is premium content. When I heard the summoning salt music, man the feels I get. It's such a speed running culture thing, hard to explain. Good stuff man!
Dude I love you. Your videos are the best. Your voice is addicting (you should get paid for voice acting) and your video editing is amazing. I love watching your content!
As someone who has spent hours and hours decktesting with Sparky, as soon as I saw that single untapped island at 17:55 I knew exactly what was going to happen hahahaha. Almost nothing Sparky does makes any sense, making it obviously useless to test a deck's performance (unless it's a combo deck you're working on or practicing goldfishing, etc that doesn't care about what your opponent is doing), but it's perfect when you're working on improving the mana base, trying different spells, etc and want to see what kind of draws your deck has and such. The one single spell that I actually have had Sparky randomly blow me out with all the time is the perfectly timed Unsummon lol. She'll do things a newb in their first game would know are obviously horrible decisions but she can be surgical with that Unsummon at times lol.
I kinda had the most joy of you just spelling that Name Dr. Wurstpeter. As someone from Austria it is just awesome to have a mostly english video but then something like this happens and i am just happy.
This has to be the best magic video on youtube! Such good editing and so much effort put into the actual game play itself. So it took days of game play, but how long did you edit it for? Super curious.
Thank you so much 🤩 All in all it took me three weeks of production. The idea for the video had been bubbling in my mind for almost two years now though
I remember this being part of the "scrapped videos" video you did after coming over to goldfish. Glad to see you found a way to stick it out. I've actually lost to this deck in historic a few times before, it's super hard to put pace.
Not sure if you read all of these comments or not, but wanted to say that you are easily one of my favorite youtubers. I love your content and I love the way you look at this game. I have built and played a lot of the decks you've shown on this channel and it's so much more fun than just grinding out meta decks for winrate. Please keep making content as long as it suits you!
The Summoning Salt music was perfect at the end with all the standard questions I have come to expect. Loved this video and I am sorry I laughed at the unsummon. I can't imagine the countless hours you put in to have it come so close to the record only for it to be pulled away at the last second like that.
You can do the dragonstorm combo quicker with ancient silver dragon and two terror of the peaks hitting for exactly 21 after the first triggers resolve.
This is top content, expert storytelling and editing. The Phil-dunk animation, the "you say there's a chance " reference and the sheer pace of the video. Another masterpiece. Thanks for taking the time for perfection, rather than churning out a half-baked video 2 times a day! Und, wer ist nicht selbst ein Wurstpeter??
hey phil, just a suggestion: with your final deck, it appears you only put in the necessary cards and lands, which i think can be optimised more. Since the arena shuffler generates two hands then selects the one with a closer land to spell ratio to your deck, adding in more nonland cards would mean you'd have to draw less hands. As always, a banger of a video!
I know, I thought about it but then decided against it for the sake of the footage. I ran into this problem before and it was especially noticeable in the Treasure Hunt deck
Dude, it might have been broken, but your deck here is completely legal in Historic, so I'd say you have the record for fastest *tournament legal* game.
I don't comment often but that was an awesome journey, thanks for sharing it with us! I also thought of the leylines/opalescence deck but it seems opalescence is not legal in any of arena's formats. Keep up the excellent work!
paper% as you called it also works if thorecal is in hand when you cast treasure hunt you just put your entire library into your hand then cast thorecal
This is some kick ass entertainment! Thanks for all your hard work! I guess somebody had to do it. Nice toss over to Summoning Salt as well. Please do more of this style video. I'm your new fan now.
Good job. Always love your videos. While I hope you re-upload this snipped into a short SummoningSalt riff for luls, you did it and are now in speed running history. Congratulations ~♡
You can hold a card over the board when waiting for your turn. This will speed up the drawing card animation from your draw phase, saving about one second
I've pulled off Thassa's Oracle turn 3 in a ranked match on Arena before. The problem is that Arena doesn't have a way to shortcut combos like we would do in paper.
Super happy to see Minion be the way to pull it off in the end. That's a pet deck of mine and I kinda want to revisit it competitively in Historic with the Fauna Shaman reprint in BRO and people's desire to play Jund Midrange seemingly having cooled off a bit after the Liliana boom.
If you edited this by yourself bravo and if you didn't heavy bravo to your editor. Big congrats! I'm just so impressed about how this was put together into a story and I'm impressed by your work and also your storytellimg.
I am number 3 on the leaderboard and great seeing support for mtga speedrunning! Maybe try color challenge next? Would be great to see where that record can go
I was thinking while you were talking about all the different decks sorry but all of these are slower then the new Minion of the Mighty + Scale up into Terror of Mount Velus. Then you played it shortly after. I knew that deck was fast but holy hell I didn't expect it to be world record fast. GGWP
Not since Technoblade's Great Potato War have I been so riveted to watch man VS the impossible! Absolutely thrilling! There is one thing I would like to point out: channeling is very much illegal in most formats because of that Ulamog combo and other ones. XD There is literally only one format you can play it without being restricted to certain conditions: Gladiator. Restricted in Vintage. Channel is just broken XD I hated finding this out as my MTG Mentor left me TWO of these in the box I inherited and neither could be used in any of the formats I wanted to play.
Getting a ban warning for scooping too fast to Sparky is the most Arena thing I've ever seen
Pretty sure the guy at Wizards forced to play on that Sparky account with the same 5 decks has had a rough time enduring this.l
