    We finally have some ice time opening up next week so I have been enjoying you and Trav’s videos with the coached sessions...trying to shake off the mental rust before getting back out there. And I’m right there with you, being 31 and only attending 1 camp growing up, I feel I’m still catching up on certain techniques. Bad angle shots give me the most anxiety haha.

    I scramble a lot on my butterfly pushes which leads to a weak push. If I’m not feeling the pressure, I have more time to load the pushing leg up which gets me across the goal faster than if I’m in scramble mode. So, the problem isn’t my strength, it’s in my head. Gotta stay cool under pressure.

    • @aaronthomas7816
      @aaronthomas7816 Рік тому

      Probably more about technique, when you are scrabbling you have a tendency to get get as good a push because you are rushed and don't execute proper technique as well. I.e. blade engagement due to leg placement or skate angle. Just my opinion from experience trying to learn power slides. Old school guy started playing goal in 1973 and still going but updating as I go along

    Honestly you have the correct idea on when to use the RVH. The reason you stated to coach is why NHL goalies dont default to it when pucks are below the goal line anymore. As you said there is a chance to score in the short side shelf if the shooter is real good. NHL goal coaches and goalies have gotten away from default RVH

    • @Dahanhockey
      @Dahanhockey 3 роки тому +3

      I absolutely agree that you must not default to the RVH.
      The exercise on display has a player driving from a flat angle and we want to seal the post. We discussed the importance of having the ability to drop and seal when a player is starting to drive towards the net or when they shoot.
      The RVH is a great tool as it maximizes chest coverage which allows you to swallow pucks.
      Watch the video we just posted on my channel for more insight.

      I’m right there with ya. I’m 34 and the only time we ever ended up in a similar position to the RVH was sliding across on wraparound attempts. It was never taught as a save selection or even as a technique to play low angle attacks.
      I will say, as a shorter (5’10”) goalie, I’ve definitely found its limitations. Much more than a stick length away and there’s too much room up top against the shooters I play against to use it, even close to the goal line. Used appropriately, though, it’s a super useful tool.

    • @duncanbrown7082
      @duncanbrown7082 3 роки тому +3

      RVH is overused. (Insert boos here). It’s taught at too young an age and has ruined young goalies’ hips. Wait until you’re in your teens before you get serious about repetitions, otherwise you’ll mess up your body. When you said that you would rather stay on your feet when the shooter is by the boards, I agree with you. You can overlap at your outer hash mark angle. The only place to shoot then is 5 hole which is an easy save at that distance and angle. In the RVH a player who’s not under pressure will easily put them in off your ear, even if you’re 6’7”. In close and under pressure is a great time to use it. You’re old enough to work hard on RVH repetitions but start off slow and get it right. You have a great coach who will help immensely!

    I learned this technique by just watching goalies do it... it kills your knees and ankles at first... once your body gets used to it, you will be doing without hesitation... can I say 1 thing I notice? I had the same ccms as well... loved em... but were bulky and heavy. Playing the new style relying more on your leg muscles lugging those big pillows around and they don’t slide... trust me. They don’t slide and aren’t meant for that type of play style unless you have those leg muscles... look into newer pads.... lighter really is faster. Why? Cuz your lighter and 2 the new technology on these pads really do make a difference. I went to optik pads and they are lighter don’t have the heavy leather straps. Just trying to be helpful cuz I went through the same thing... and I’m a beer leaguer as well so I’m not a young kid. But STRETCH those lower legs and hips and groin... A LOT! hope it helps and doesn’t come off as rude
