The secret to DMVs is finding a small town DMV. I drive 45 minutes to a rinkie dink small town to go to the DMV, because it only takes on average 30 minutes for them to help me. I also bring a suitcase with every possible piece of garbage they could ask for. I you don't, they will send you on a quest to get an item only to change their minds once you get back 2 hours later. I once had to get a birth certificate made at the local court just to get my license, another time I needed 10 pieces of mail. I think the people at the DMV are just fucking with everyone.
The DMV is great for me because I live less than a block from one of those small town DMV’s, so even if they send me on some ridiculous fetch quest it’s still only like five minutes of walking to go get whatever contrived bullshit they claim I need.

It’s true tho! I don’t live in Cincinnati, but I live very close. Columbus area. And my time at the BMV was pleasant. There was hardly anyone there aside from old people, it was calm and nice and orderly. I’m scared to move to another state because then I’d have to deal with DMV and everything I’ve heard about them sounds terrible.
I’m late but the DMV where I live in Georgia has always been pretty nice. It’s orderly, quiet, and you get in and out pretty quickly. Last time I went I was there for half an hour at the most

This so reminds me of when my mom and I were dealing with the DMV in Hawaii. Now for me, it really wasn’t that bad, I just had to switch my license over from SC to HI, couple forms, a computer test, new picture, honestly not that bad. My poor Mom on the other hand- she needed hers renewed, which normally isn’t a big deal. Except she’d also gotten divorced, however, her name didn’t even change. But for Some reason, this fact complicated the process So Much for her. It took her at least Four visits. I went with her on two of them (for my stuff). On the second visit, my stuff was wrapping up, the clerk was just handing me my forms and my license, I glance over to a counter a few desks over, and I see my mom’s face and I immediately knew it was going to be bad. It wasn’t a complete Karen-esque meltdown, but it still wasn’t pretty. I was so glad my stuff was done and I didn’t have to bear witness anymore.
Oh wow. Even now, in cali it’s much better than it used to be, i went with my mom to get an ID as I’m an adult now, and we had to go in person and bring my literal birth certificate as the official document stuff to prove I am me (since I basically don’t exist legally cause I’m an 18y old who does nothing and has no mail or school stuff lol), so therefore needed my moms birth certificate to prove she’s the mom on mine? And they had an issue with hers cause, surprise-surprise, her name “changed”!! No, not really, she got married so her last name changed like over 20y ago, and mothers have ALWAYS had their maiden names on the certificate regardless of name change or marriage so it’s so weird that the DMV catches you out for a name change on a birth certificate. It’s the mothers maiden name, she was married therefore name changed, the dmv went through this for many legal things with her dozens of times and yet “oop, different name on this thing we’ve seen before from you multiple times! Gotta get proof of your marriage out now! Again!”
NC DMVs aren’t usually terrible, but I’ve been to some like what Bob described. It’s the worst form of chaos, in that instead of being frightening, exciting, dangerous, or fun, it’s the kind of chaos that is woefully inefficient, therefore making it tedious and boring. There were times were I could genuinely feel myself gradually dying as I sat in that chair.
Feeling yourself age, sitting in that chair with someone else who was the one who needed to be there... Gives you a great time to think about other monotonous soul draining things to use as a yard stick and say to yourself "oh, y'know...[insert blank life sapping thing here ] isn't so bad if you look at the bigger picture...huuuhhnnn..."
In Michigan, our local DMV (we just call it Secretary of State) has always been a very efficient and easy time, except when when my mom had to get my grandmother's birth certificate, but that was because of how much my grandmother had lied about all her personal information overthe years
Yeah I also live in Michigan and it’s pretty easy as long as you schedule an appointment online beforehand. Otherwise you gotta stand in a separate line, which does take a bit longer.
The very few times that I’ve had to go to the DMV and made an appointment, I’ve literally had to stay up until midnight, refresh the appointment page, and grab the timeslot absolutely the farthest amount of time away possible right as it became available in order to get one.
Hearing this story, I'm surprised the DMV doesn't hire 1 or 2 people to be with the customer to direct people where they are suppose to go or what forms they're suppose to have before showing up to the counter to get everything finalized.
Why should they? You have to come in regardless so if your paperwork is off they can just tell you "piss off try again, NEXT!" and you will come back, what chouse do you have?
Same Bob and everyone who works at the DMV no matter what state you live in all the employees are rude or act like they can be doing something else with their time. And the system never changes all this technology and it still sucks.
Honestly, the DMV where I live is actually pretty nice. You'll get a long-ish line here and there, but nothing to the point where it's out the door lol. The employees there are all really nice & quick at their job as well. Idk, maybe since I live in a small town it's not as stressful as big city DMV'S? I will say that the only downside is that they're only open Tuesdays & Thursdays which sucks lol. 🤣🤣🤣

For me going to the DMV is like taking a shit. It only took me 6 seconds to poop, but I’m in there for 30 minutes. Renewing my license is a pretty smooth process that gets done in 3 minutes or so. But unless you get there as soon as they open, you will be there for 6 hours.
When I went to the DMV to take my drivers test, it was on these old ass computers and the one that I was using crashed on me during the test. So I got up I went to the lady at the desk who was reading a book and I told that the computer shut down, I dont know what to do, what should I do. I can't get this ladies tone of voice in writing but in the same way that a teacher would scold a child for asking a stupid question or an exasperated parent losing her temper yelled, "Then just use a DIFFERENT computer!" and went back to reading. When I took my on the road test, when I passed, the grader didnt shake my hand or congratulate me or anything, he just wrote some words down on a piece of paper and exited the car without a single word. So yeah fuck the DMV.
my worst (texas) DMV experience was trying to get my learner's permit. i went to make an appointment and they had a list of things to click about why you were making the appointment. the button for "drivers license or learner's permit" was one of several options that was grayed out. i literally could not select that. i had to select "other" and explain to the lady at the appointment what was going on and why i was actually there.
I remember waiting for 6 hours just to renew my license. I had time to go get groceries, go to the book store, and go home to watch a movie. I came back, and I was still waiting 2 hours.
I have literally no issues with the BMV in Indiana. I get my number sit for maybe five minutes, and a person helps me with what I need helped with (they even help people get registered for voting!) thanks Bob for discouraging me from moving to California even more.
The Indiana BMV has always been very nice to me, and I can tell that the people who work there actually enjoy it. I just don't like going because I'm a little bitch baby and I'm scared I'm gonna fuck something up and not have the right stuff 🥺
This is the same for me in Ohio. I’ve been to 3 separate BMV’s in the state and I the longest I was there for was maybe 2 hours and that was too get a car ownership transferred from my parents to myself after waiting in-line.

I remember going to the dmv with my mom because we needed to get me a new id and we wasted maybe half an hour only to be told that my middle name on my birth certificate was off by 1 letter compared to everything else. Only because someone didn't spell my dad's information right before his deployment.
Better than IRS office buildings. You have to make an appointment over the phone but you can’t because they say they are overwhelmed with appointments. So you’ll get hung up on and if you go to the office, you’ll find it completely empty. Only people in the building are employees that tell you to make an appointment over the phone (which you can’t). I had to beg the IRS to get off their asses and help me. It’s my dream job though. Set up a answering machine that doesn’t schedule appointments and then turn away anyone without an appointment.
Someone who works at a bmv here! Ill explain the vin number process bc its needed no matter where you go but its very important, its called an out of state vin inspection. If you had a vehicle you want to register in a new state its required, and we check the number 3 different times because IF WE GET IT WRONG, IT FUCKS YOU OVER. We need those in order to get you an in state title and without an in state title you CANNOT get plates from that state. Hope this explains it!

I live in Oklahoma and I got my Learner's Permit a few months ago. My experience getting it wasn't QUITE as bad as Bob's story, but it was pretty dang similar. I can't WAIT to see how it's going to be actually getting the license! >:P
I don't know what it's like in other California cities, but in the one I live in, it's an extremely streamlined process no matter what you do and the building is full of employees just churning through numbers. I never spend more than 20 minutes there.
Even though I don't have a driver's licence yet I can TOTALLY understand Bob's pain, and I really hope the California DMV has stepped up their game in making it a bit easier for folks to get their driver's licence, cause my gosh I DO NOT want to experience that when I get my driver's licence one day. lol X3
My advice; find the DMV furthest from everything. The one between four tiny towns with a combined population under 5,000. You’ll be in and out in ten minutes and if you have to take a driving test, there’s no stoplights or intersections around, so they just have you take a pleasant drive down the one road before turning around in the parking lot of the gas station or McDonalds that’s the only other thing in a five mile radius. Best of all, they have nothing going on all day, so they might actually let you see and retake your driver’s listener photo.
I swear I must waste all my human luck on DMV visits because every time I go the line isnt that long and I never have any problems. I'm in and out in like 5-10 minutes and never have issues. Why I couldnt save my luck for more important things idk but I'm glad I have yet to experience the true horrors of the DMV
While not as annoying, the Texas DMV is similar. It opens at 8, so you get there at 5am. Have your documents and your vehicle inspection passed, and make sure everything is correct, or else you're screwed.
In New Jersey we have the same problem with absolutely no way to make an appointment, also all the people at the desk will throw your papers all over the place and you have to scrape them off the ground
the only time i've gone to the dmv was to get my picture taken and stuff for my learner's permit, but that was in 2020 so there were barely any people there. the permit test was online, and the actual driving test was just getting into a car outside the dmv, and i haven't had to renew my license yet so my only dmv experience was it being pretty empty and a quick wait lol.
based on what people talk about in the comment, what I got out of that is that its better for you guys to just drive half way across the country to get to an actual proper DMV than go to your local DMV
when it came around to get my state ID (in california) i went with my mom to the nearest one. shit was packed but it was like 3pm. my poor mom had to stress out by bringing all this random ass information and i felt horrible. walking in, there were just a ton of people sitting and waiting for god knows what. we had to wait in a line to be attended but cali being cali you don’t go a full experience without meeting interesting people. lady in front of us just so randomly starting ranting about jesus and controversial things (my family is catholic but i’m not) so it kind of annoyed me. thankfully the line didn’t take too long and we were sat for a couple minutes. took my picture, and left. i have yet to get my license but don’t plan to soon.

I feel like someday when or if I get the cash, I'd be willing to go to every location that still uses '95 computers and give them actual good running systems from today just so they run properly, and have people go in and check on them weekly to make sure they don't just throw them out or act like they don't know how to use it. Like, you would have to be stupid to not know how to use a proper FAST RUNNING system compared to your hour long dial up wait time.
The first time I went to the DMV, it was super empty and I was in and out super fast. As a result, I assumed that the DMV being hell was a holdover joke from before they figured it all out. Every other tume after that, it has been the nightmare jokes make it out to be.
For my DDS(for some reason Georgia can't just use DMV like a normal state cus of course) it was pretty chill both times I got my ID. I had to get my license renewed in and the first time I went there the line was all the way around the building. I see a guy coming towards the people in the line with a clipboard. Apparently they only had a 20 person limit for each day. If you didn’t get on that list you ain’t going in. So I leave and plan to go super early…apparently not early enough because some people had been there since 3:00 am. I did manage to make it onto the list. There would be moments of people just barging into the office and getting told they missed the list. One lady slammed the door so hard as she left throwing a fit. 5 hours later I’m 3rd in line and this lady who seemed to be under the influence of substances plopped herself in a chair across from mine. She kept slapping the chair with her hands. An hour later, she says “how long you been here” “5:00 am” “WHAT REALLY?” “Yeah you have to be put on a list to get what you need done.” “How do I get on that list!” “Come back tomorrow they’re not accepting more people today. She then stands up and yells at the front desk people saying this is bull…and she too stormed out of the building.

They probably did but then to save money that position got cut back in like 2008 and they just never bothered re-instituting it.

Honestly, the DMV where I live is actually pretty nice. You'll get a long-ish line here and there, but nothing to the point where it's out the door lol. The employees there are all really nice & quick at their job as well. Idk, maybe since I live in a small town it's not as stressful as big city DMV'S? I will say that the only downside is that they're only open Tuesdays & Thursdays which sucks lol. 🤣🤣🤣
And idk what kind of hell that was that Bob was explaining with the different sections for different things, but that just sounds aggravating as hell! As someone who's only lived in small cities/towns w/ DMV's that don't have a complex system, I'd be livid and would not have the patience to put up with that garbage system! Like, why would I need to wait to talk to Josh about renewing my license plate when you should know how to do that too, Becky! Lol all jokes aside, they need a different system cause they're making it more complicated than what it actually is supposed to be. 💀🤣

For me going to the DMV is like taking a shit. It only took me 6 seconds to poop, but I’m in there for 30 minutes. Renewing my license is a pretty smooth process that gets done in 3 minutes or so. But unless you get there as soon as they open, you will be there for 6 hours.

When I went to the DMV to take my drivers test, it was on these old ass computers and the one that I was using crashed on me during the test. So I got up I went to the lady at the desk who was reading a book and I told that the computer shut down, I dont know what to do, what should I do. I can't get this ladies tone of voice in writing but in the same way that a teacher would scold a child for asking a stupid question or an exasperated parent losing her temper yelled, "Then just use a DIFFERENT computer!" and went back to reading. When I took my on the road test, when I passed, the grader didnt shake my hand or congratulate me or anything, he just wrote some words down on a piece of paper and exited the car without a single word.
So yeah fuck the DMV.
my worst (texas) DMV experience was trying to get my learner's permit. i went to make an appointment and they had a list of things to click about why you were making the appointment. the button for "drivers license or learner's permit" was one of several options that was grayed out. i literally could not select that. i had to select "other" and explain to the lady at the appointment what was going on and why i was actually there.

I remember waiting for 6 hours just to renew my license. I had time to go get groceries, go to the book store, and go home to watch a movie. I came back, and I was still waiting 2 hours.
I have literally no issues with the BMV in Indiana. I get my number sit for maybe five minutes, and a person helps me with what I need helped with (they even help people get registered for voting!) thanks Bob for discouraging me from moving to California even more.

This is the same for me in Ohio. I’ve been to 3 separate BMV’s in the state and I the longest I was there for was maybe 2 hours and that was too get a car ownership transferred from my parents to myself after waiting in-line.
mark is totally right, the ohio BMV is such a nicety compared to the DMV (of texas for me). in texas, i had to wait 8 hours for a renewal when i turned 18. good god i wanted to die
A DMV in a state like Texas (especially in an urban area) sounds like such a bureaucratic nightmare of eldritch proportions that it would cause Franz Kafka to blow his brains out just by the shear mention of it.

I went to the Arizona DMV for my licence...and paid 3 hours of my life in the process.
So glad I've a class A license... I just go to the Commercial DMV and it's a breeze.

Better than IRS office buildings. You have to make an appointment over the phone but you can’t because they say they are overwhelmed with appointments. So you’ll get hung up on and if you go to the office, you’ll find it completely empty. Only people in the building are employees that tell you to make an appointment over the phone (which you can’t). I had to beg the IRS to get off their asses and help me. It’s my dream job though. Set up a answering machine that doesn’t schedule appointments and then turn away anyone without an appointment.
Someone who works at a bmv here! Ill explain the vin number process bc its needed no matter where you go but its very important, its called an out of state vin inspection. If you had a vehicle you want to register in a new state its required, and we check the number 3 different times because IF WE GET IT WRONG, IT FUCKS YOU OVER. We need those in order to get you an in state title and without an in state title you CANNOT get plates from that state. Hope this explains it!

I live in Oklahoma and I got my Learner's Permit a few months ago. My experience getting it wasn't QUITE as bad as Bob's story, but it was pretty dang similar. I can't WAIT to see how it's going to be actually getting the license! >:P
I don't know what it's like in other California cities, but in the one I live in, it's an extremely streamlined process no matter what you do and the building is full of employees just churning through numbers. I never spend more than 20 minutes there.
Even though I don't have a driver's licence yet I can TOTALLY understand Bob's pain, and I really hope the California DMV has stepped up their game in making it a bit easier for folks to get their driver's licence, cause my gosh I DO NOT want to experience that when I get my driver's licence one day. lol X3

I always feel bad for people who've had bad DMV experiences because I've only ever had one and it was mildly annoying, not horribly irritating.
My advice; find the DMV furthest from everything. The one between four tiny towns with a combined population under 5,000. You’ll be in and out in ten minutes and if you have to take a driving test, there’s no stoplights or intersections around, so they just have you take a pleasant drive down the one road before turning around in the parking lot of the gas station or McDonalds that’s the only other thing in a five mile radius. Best of all, they have nothing going on all day, so they might actually let you see and retake your driver’s listener photo.
I swear I must waste all my human luck on DMV visits because every time I go the line isnt that long and I never have any problems. I'm in and out in like 5-10 minutes and never have issues. Why I couldnt save my luck for more important things idk but I'm glad I have yet to experience the true horrors of the DMV

While not as annoying, the Texas DMV is similar. It opens at 8, so you get there at 5am. Have your documents and your vehicle inspection passed, and make sure everything is correct, or else you're screwed.

In New Mexico we have these Express DMV’s that are small dmv’s in strip malls that make what normally takes hours/into like…less than 30 minutes.
In New Jersey we have the same problem with absolutely no way to make an appointment, also all the people at the desk will throw your papers all over the place and you have to scrape them off the ground

the only time i've gone to the dmv was to get my picture taken and stuff for my learner's permit, but that was in 2020 so there were barely any people there.
the permit test was online, and the actual driving test was just getting into a car outside the dmv, and i haven't had to renew my license yet so my only dmv experience was it being pretty empty and a quick wait lol.
based on what people talk about in the comment, what I got out of that is that its better for you guys to just drive half way across the country to get to an actual proper DMV than go to your local DMV

when it came around to get my state ID (in california) i went with my mom to the nearest one. shit was packed but it was like 3pm. my poor mom had to stress out by bringing all this random ass information and i felt horrible. walking in, there were just a ton of people sitting and waiting for god knows what.
we had to wait in a line to be attended but cali being cali you don’t go a full experience without meeting interesting people. lady in front of us just so randomly starting ranting about jesus and controversial things (my family is catholic but i’m not) so it kind of annoyed me. thankfully the line didn’t take too long and we were sat for a couple minutes. took my picture, and left.
i have yet to get my license but don’t plan to soon.

I once had to deal with the California DMV for work via email (because I don't live in CA) to handle a title transfer for my boss and it took A YEAR AND A HALF.

I feel like someday when or if I get the cash, I'd be willing to go to every location that still uses '95 computers and give them actual good running systems from today just so they run properly, and have people go in and check on them weekly to make sure they don't just throw them out or act like they don't know how to use it. Like, you would have to be stupid to not know how to use a proper FAST RUNNING system compared to your hour long dial up wait time.

For my DDS(for some reason Georgia can't just use DMV like a normal state cus of course) it was pretty chill both times I got my ID. There was a wait, yeah but that's cus literally everyone there is always moving, always waiting last minute, or some self-inflicted reason. But other than that they were nice and made sure I understood the protocols. Though my first time they somehow put the wrong day of my birthday with my papers.

I had to get my license renewed in and the first time I went there the line was all the way around the building. I see a guy coming towards the people in the line with a clipboard. Apparently they only had a 20 person limit for each day. If you didn’t get on that list you ain’t going in. So I leave and plan to go super early…apparently not early enough because some people had been there since 3:00 am. I did manage to make it onto the list. There would be moments of people just barging into the office and getting told they missed the list. One lady slammed the door so hard as she left throwing a fit. 5 hours later I’m 3rd in line and this lady who seemed to be under the influence of substances plopped herself in a chair across from mine. She kept slapping the chair with her hands. An hour later, she says “how long you been here” “5:00 am” “WHAT REALLY?” “Yeah you have to be put on a list to get what you need done.” “How do I get on that list!” “Come back tomorrow they’re not accepting more people today. She then stands up and yells at the front desk people saying this is bull…and she too stormed out of the building.
