- Joanna Simpson was killed in 2010 by her husband, pilot Robert Brown. Their two children were in the next room when he bludgeoned her to death and then buried her in a pre-dug grave. He was found guilty of manslaughter and sentenced to 26 years in prison.
The former pilot recently brought a High Court challenge against the government which moved to block his automatic release from prison. He claims that 'political motivation' amid a media campaign against his release improperly contributed to a decision to refer his case to the Parole Board. He has served 13 years and was due for parole last year but last October Justice Secretary Alex Chalk used new powers to have Brown's case reviewed by the Parole Board rather than allow his release on licence at the halfway point of his sentence.
Di is now waiting for the decision of the appeal - which could see her daughter’s killer freed.

Why are sentences halfed...no point in giving the full sentence in the first place
Tories dont like paying to keep citizens safe from criminals, they need the money to give themselves pay rises and tax cuts!
I cannot believe he didn’t receive a whole life tariff, this man is a monster, he should never be released. I feel so sorry for the family, especially the children who must dread him getting in touch with them.
Yes. In the USA he'd have never seen liberty again. I'm not sating the USA get it right but in the UK we are waaaayyy to soft in our sentences in this type of situation.

How on earth can a man who deliberately took his wifes life, only be given such a small sentence and then only do half that sentence then hes up for parole.

I'm sure the anger he had has been increasing during his time in prison and can fully understand how scared how Joanna's family must be feeling...petrified ...It's so true our Judges and the law in this country is a farce...

I had counselling from a very experienced (decades) very qualified therapist. 3 different degrees. Had a radio programme. Due to how I was brought up I am susceptible to being controlled by fully narcissistic people . The therapist said to me “anyone, literally anyone can be conned, even me” . Fully narcissistic people cannot be rehabilitated. The narcissism controls them and will not allow it.
Watched this last night. Good luck to you both because this man should be behind bars for the remainder of his life. To put his daughter through that ordeal was despicable.
Lock him up for life !!!
He should have his appeal refused and his sentence doubled to 52 years.

He got life ,100 years. She knew what he was like ,yet married him and had two kids with him.

I totally despair of judges and juries in UK. This is a travesty. His lawyer/judge/whoever, is beyond despicable for withholding the 'chilling clip' of her granddaughter being interviewed by police. This is a most terrible crime.
It was the fault of the prosecution...it was available to them and their case to make!...

Actually she rushed ahead with the relationship and realised the mistake on her honeymoon. Then she got pregnant and felt trapped. Good thing her father made him sign a prenup.

I'm so puzzled by law in England. Any murderer needs to be at least serving a 50-year sentence.
The fact that this murderer is serving only half the sentence because the law was changed after his conviction beggars belief.
I can't understand why an appeal wasn't made for a retrial of his 'man slaughter' conviction.
The lady doesn't look anything close to 85 years old, and I hope she has good security for her safety. Her life, like her daughter's, is too precious to end by the hand of another.

You cannot simply say that prosecution doesn't agree with the jury..you can't go behind their verdicts...you need grounds for appeal unfortunately...
@@manichairdo9265 sadly the bias in favour of the accused leads to criminals getting off lightly.... unless you say something that the govt doesn't like. Then, the hammer falls hard. Grooming gang child rapists walk free, the man that called it out has been persecuted by the law for years andxthe police officers who tried to do something about it were drummed out of their jobs. That is British justice now.
A life sentence is 100 years. Period ,that means there sentence is 100 years. Then they're given a minimum tariff ie 25 years ,which means once they've served this they'll be considered for release .
It doesn't mean they'll be released.
They have to behave and prove thst they're rehabilitated.

I don’t understand why the parole people aren’t schooled in narcissism and how this one behaviour that we all have can be so far gone in some humans that it then drives their whole life. There is almost no habilitation from that curse. People have to go to the “shame” they carry and it would be so painful most people don’t (even if they are aware there is something wrong). It takes years of hard work to change behaviours. The narcissism will drive him to be exactly what the parole people want to see. They ( people with high narcissism) have years of experience on how to have convincing facades.
Why were the interviews deemed inadmissible? Was he denied his rights? Judges don’t just give these rulings for the fun of it!

Desisory sentence
Feel for the family, how terrible to lose your daughter in such a dreadful way. The children have grown up without a mother and will now know the full facts.He should never, ever be released.
I’ve never been on a jury. Can someone please advise whether when the jury has retired to consider the verdict, do they have anyone else present? For example to ensure that one or more jurors don’t dominate the others, or if a point of law is being questioned they have legal advice immediately to hand? Are they just left to it?
I've been on a Jury twice & Coroner's Jury making it 3. You're left to your own devices! No one else just the Jury members.
When you go out to deliberate the judge will give guiding questions to consider .... Yes or No answers and these determine the verdict very often. I don't know what went wrong here ! It's appalling .....

I find it quite concerning that there’s nobody else there to ensure the most forceful personalities don’t intimidate the others to agree with their verdict. The outcome of this trial is inexplicable. I do think that defence lawyers have no morals whatsoever and will ‘cheat’ in any way possible to achieve the best results for themselves, regardless of true justice.

I do not agree with Hetty, because all couples argue, and although this is a case where there was domestic abuse leading to the death of the lady, I truly believe that this will open up a can of worms for normal incidents exaggerated by over emotional partners who are in the moment in a heated argument . How does one measure coercive behaviour and does one create a law, just in case the aggressor was perhaps a little over animated at a particular point?

On her wedding night she rang her mother and said I've made a terrible mistake. Yet, went on to have two children with him. Women need to take responsibility for who they get in bed with.

I watched the program last night and although I really wanted to watch it I fell asleep as I thought it was very poorly made .I hated all the music and foggy scenes ,they picked the wrong people to make this program for goodness sake CUT the music 😡
He deserve to be free , he served for his mistakes and mean while in jail he had the time to think and reflect about his mistake
Yeah she lost family member but he served half his time so should be released that is the law, if he served all his time this family member sounds like she would still pope up to punish him none stop
The facts are no matter anyone's opinions or feelings he was convicted of manslaughter and sentenced accordingly and has served his minimum time.
fortunately just because someone says he shouldn't be released doesn't mean that he can be held indefinitely. im sure he will have conditional restrictions on his release.

@@benharry9117 but it's not so get over it, the remaining time on his sentence is meant to be a deterrent as it's the time left to serve if he commits any crime and is recalled back to prison, he would then have to carry out any other sentence consecutively.
Would you rather he served his full time and had zero restrictions on his release? Imo that would make someone with harmful intent far more dangerous.

Based on the information I’ve seen the jury in this case got it spectacularly wrong. That aside I can’t understand why you are so gleeful that this man is going to be released into society. I bet you wouldn’t think the same if your family had been victims.
Our legal system has been broken for years. So often we have to rely on other prisoners to serve justice.
