    As you said Bruce, it is different for everyone. I wouldn’t sell; but then, I never do. I started collecting watches as a youngster in 1972 and, to this day, I have focused mostly on affordable watches. I love owning 45 watches and enjoy wearing them all. I can sell some of my early Seikos at 10 times what I paid for them, but they bring as much joy to me as a Rolex or Omega would to someone else. Just as I enjoy looking at Ferraris and Porsches, I enjoy looking at Daytonas and Omega Snoopies: but I do not want to own any of them. I love driving my old Volvos (yes, four of them!) and wear my cheap watches with great pleasure.

      Owning 45 watches would be a chore. You're not going to be paying to service them, so most of them probably keep crappy time or have other glitches.

      @@highnrising I service my watches as the need arises. My watchmaker is the venerable Hisao Yakota here in North Vancouver, Canada. have known him for more years than I care to remember. He is a third-generation watchmaker who used to work for Seiko in Japan as a youngster. Now in his mid-seventies, Hisao is a maestro at maintaining vintage watches. Sourcing OEM pats for my older pieces has never been a problem for him (starkly contrasting my experience with micro brands). More to your comment, servicing Seiko and ETAs are cheap as chips, and paying a few hundred dollars a year is just part of the hobby. I am an a-type person and my all vintage pieces keep excellent time.

      Surprisingly effective. I bought a titanium watch with a titanium bracelet, but the fit of that bracelet was really poor and for a while I didn't wear the watch. I ended buying a really high quality leather strap to match the markers and it made a huge difference to the watch and my enjoyment of it. There are many brands where the watch head is amazing, but the strap/bracelet choice is woeful.

  • @scott7841

    It's true that many people don't notice watches. But that is not always the case. How many times have you seen a very well dressed person? But you probably don't approach them or make any comments in most scenarios about their clothing. Maybe that is not an exact analogy, but some folks may get my point here. As for Rolex watches, I think many of them are fantastic while not necessarily being for everyone (even if they have the money). And based on the circumstances, I think Bruce is giving the guy good advice. He is already having regrets early on with his Rolex (based on this personal situation), so it's not likely to change. If the owner can't see themselves wearing the watch and truly enjoying it, there's no point in keeping it. Sell the watch. Take the loss, learn from the experience, and move on.

    When I started this hobby 16 years ago I scoffed at Rolex. Used to say, “how can anyone drop $x on a watch?!”
    Now I’m looking at dropping $40k CAD on a PM Daytona on oysterflex lol.. we all come around. Difference is I love Rolex watches now purely for their design and reliability. In 16 years I’ve never posted any of my watches on my social media platforms - I prefer if people didn’t notice.

I used to purchase a lot of Breitling - but liking more trim silhouettes. Put my name on “the list” for a 36 Explorer last week. Walked down 5th and saw the Summer Blue Aqua Terra and BOOM. They were sizing it for me 35 minutes later. I was thinking, whoa- you never even laid eyes on that piece, didn’t watch a single video - who does that?!! Lol, well, you made me feel so not alone….. the rush is amazing… and when the dust settles, and the “fit” is right- it’s just the best. - thanks, Bruce! your girl from

    You have to be pretty rich -the 1% at least to be able to spend $40,000 on a watch. Especially when you have a family... never mind building up a relationship with an AD to give you a Rolex in the first place.

    • @solidstream13
      @solidstream13 10 місяців тому +1

      It depends on how you prioritize your spending. Many people spend $40,000 on a new car and go out to eat every other night and take Hawaiian vacations. Some drive a cheap car, cool at home go camping and invest that $40k in a watch that will go up in value. I truly believe you can buy this watch as a middle class person.

      Top 1% networth in the USA as of 2023 is $13.7 Million. Any household holding between $2.47 Million networth to $13.6M is consider within the top 2% networth band in the USA as of 2023. If you have a networth of $4M, spending $40K on a watch, which is 1% of your networth on a hobby, is within reason (especially when you prioritize appropriately, buying the watch with cash, house is paid off and you have stashed away money for retirement, have emergency savings and no debt). My point being, $4M networth is no where close to being a top 1%, but you can easily afford the watch when nearing the bottom of the top 2%. The math works out and you don't have to be a top 1% to buy a day date.

    The Rolex over-retail Grey Market values have confused a lot of people and for many can only be understood through the lens of hype. The inflated Grey Market prices have been good news for Rolex as it has enabled them to increase their prices significantly but it has caused confusion and frustration with both retailers and buyers. You buy them because you can and you enjoy the feel of owning it. They should not be considered as assets and the assumption should always be that you will make a net loss of 50% if you flip it. If you are uncomfortable with the idea, then this luxury item is simply not for you. Period.

I kept my Batman under long sleeves on every site visit.
    I will say, I've since been allocated a polar dial Explorer II and I still hide it under long sleeves but even when it becomes exposed nobody has ever noticed, to your point Bruce. Thanks for the video and thoughtful discussion.

    Dear Viewer. Please remember that everything in life is a victim of fashion. The tide comes in and out. So just because Rolex is the thing now, doesn't mean they will be in 20 years. I go to plenty of watch auctions, where you can buy a 50's, 60's or 70's Patek for $5-7000. Thinking that this is your pension is just not true. Remember Rolex will soon be making 2 million watches a year. So they aren't rare.

    Not really a collector but I bought a Tudor Tiger woods in like 1998 and that thing has shot up in price over the years. Worth almost 5 times the price I paid. Watch has a white face, black sub dials, chunky stainless band, black units per hr bezel.

    I think people should buy a watch to wear and only if they like it. That’s it.
    It should not be an investment given that it’s rare when people “make money” considering inflation…
    It should not be a flex for people to notice.

    Hello Jack - if you are reading - I am sorry for hearing of your regret having obtained a prized Rolex DATE model 15210 from SWE. You are probably confused as to what a Rolex watch is, and I assure you a Rolex Oyster Chronometer is NOT jewelry but a horologic instrument (chronometer) made to aid in locating or navigating you to any place on earth at any time down to the second. You have a highly functional and beautiful oyster chronometer that I see from Bruce's posting (if it is yours) from SWE who are highly reputable who will be happy to take it back from you. If you want a fine watch only to show off, and, or, not use it for the instrumentation that it was made for as a professional-use watch - then having a Rolex is not for you. And for your information, your 34mm entry-level watch has the exact same movement caliber 3130 as Bruce's DAY-DATE models that were made during the 1990 era and of the same quality. As far as the price you paid, not mentioned here, you got a good deal but you probably could have done better in Italy or Germany.

    Sorry pal, but if you bought a Rolex to begin with then it means you had the dough to burn. In my life I've lost thousands on bad investments, scams, etc. It's part of life - so don't have regrets, just move on and learn the lesson. I would NEVER spend $5k to $10k on ANY kind of watch. NO WAY JOSE! It's like putting all your pension investments in one stock.

    2:24 I can follow your logic, but you're not taking the opportunity cost into consideration. If you sell the watch now at a loss and invest that money in the S&P 500, the invest will double every 10 years (average of 8% return per year). I don't think you will get $140,000 for this watch in 20 years.

    An interesting vid. I do not sell my watches because I consider myself not a collector but an enthusiast, and why would any enthusiast think ROI as primary consideration when I like a watch for what it is and not for its monetary equivalent? Your "opining" kinda lost me two minutes into your vid once you mentioned possible merits and dismerits of 'flipping'... I believe there is a certain sickness of soul that develops in the people who were "spoiled"- for example, those who dated too many in their day and thus moved beyond any ability to commit, be it to a woman or a watch. I also pity those unfortunate souls wjo are unable to live in present, to be fully present in the present and to enjoy each moment
    without scheming years ahead into planned "upgrades"...
    Regarding specifically Rolex - my thoughts are rather simple:
    A) Let's admit that the best timekeeping right now is done by a cell phone, and a watch is more of a jewelry object really. While its precision may tickle imagination, it's really irrelevant in our era when a disposable $300 watch keeps time better than the best 19th century marine chronometers!
    B) Therefore, with caliber issue aside, Tudor makes the best Rolex! Yes, 'tis true! The 300% upcharge for the appearance of the Rolex name on the dial is precisely that: - a marketing and reputational value of Rolex trademark and not much besides! Everyone should decide on their own if they wish to pay that upcharge for reputation and status that comes with it. I do not hate on Rolex as many do, but there are alternatives, for sure.
    C) Your gold bracelet day/date is actually a beauty and I'd wanted one for no other reason than Andy Warhol used to wear one daily later in life. And it looks great as a gold bracelet!!! This is important- in my mind, this watch IS NOT A WATCH with gold bracelet but a GOLD BRACELET with a watch in it (as an extra)!! There is a fundamental conceptual difference between the two: this day/date is akin to a women's jewelry bracelet with a watch; so, you've got yourself one of most beautiful pieces of men-jewelry. Enjoy it for what it is! Cheers!
    PS. A disclaimer: - I do have a 'proper' solid gold watch, made in Glasshute that I chose over a Rolex, a proper heavy large yellow gold nugget with very sophisticated movement, but it comes only on a black alligator strap, like a 'proper' gold watch would. Do not really care if it appreciates with time or not, it's my (almost) daily wearer which I enjoy and love and will never sell as too many good life moments are tied with it. I am a little envious of your bracelet-with-a-watch! I will never sell mine, but I am really considering buying the one like yours...
    Cheers!

    The same goes with associated with luxurious goods. Don’t allow a Rolex or Porsche or loving Dubai to be a stigma. The vast majority will hate you moving up in life because that’s a swear word for them as a metaphor of their own circumstances.

    • @yoryteperman429
      @yoryteperman429 10 місяців тому

      Why? This Rolex is a poor investment. It's more of a status symbol, to be worn and enjoyed, with most value coming from its reputation and history and brand. Its best to wear, get the kudos and the envy, bask in the sense of well-being that wearing such a watch can cause, and, as Conan once said- hear the lamentations of your enemies..." at a sight of it! It is not a watch to keep in a safe. I'd wear mine to scratches, knowing that we cannot take it (or gold coins for that matter) once we depart this world- which can happen to anyone at any moment, by the way! So, live in the present moment, enjly what you got, live your life to the fullest, and like in an old joke, when your kids open your will, let it say "all my money I spent while being of solid mind.."

    I am not American. I am not religious. so I am curious - Why would wearing a Rolex as part of the clergy potentially be considered inappropriate?

    • @Orozco_PNW
      @Orozco_PNW 11 місяців тому

      It probably depends on the type of religious sect, look up televangelism...

    • @crownandconvention
      @crownandconvention 11 місяців тому +2

      Two main reasons: firstly, in most Christian sects it's seen as important to live your life an an example of morality and Christ-like character. In many groups this is particularly important for people who hold positions in the church. The consumerism represented by a brand like Rolex is much more in line with personal gratification than with humility and service as exemplified by Christ.
      Secondly, churches are typically funded by donation, and tythe given by members of the congregation and community. If members of the church staff are buying luxury goods it can make people concerned about corruption and embezzlement.

    • @WordMadeFlesh777
      @WordMadeFlesh777 11 місяців тому +1

      If you are clergy AKA making a living income from the church congregation ie. Tithes and offerings, it’s a bad look to have a luxury item that was bought and paid for by your church parishioners. All that money is accounted for and most would say the money can be spent elsewhere..

    my recommendation for selling is to either sell face to face, or to someone on forums with a lot of good feedback, or on ebay, listed high priced with a "make an offer" button, and filter offers from people only with a lot of good feedback. its a lot easier to get scammed as a seller than as a buyer as paypal usually side with buyers.
