Well done Jon, a good explication for new geocachers, and agreed those continuing with this sport the $30 premium is the way to go for reasons you stated. Kudos!
As an iPhone user, I've never used c:geo, but I've read about it and the controversy about it. From what I understand, it goes against the geocaching API terms of use, because it does data scraping from the geocaching website instead of using their approved API and following its rules. That's all I know about it honestly. Thank you for watching and commenting!
C:geo kicks me out, maybe when I go to another state? 🤷🏻♂️ It did this for the first time over the weekend (and thus ruined any caching on my trip 😡😡😡) First time in probably 10 years using c:Geo
Thank you for the comment, and yes that's correct, for new premium membership subscribers. On June 6th 2023 the annual price of premium membership was increased, for those who weren't already premium members. So those renewing their premium membership who already had the $29.99 annual cost can continue to do so until it lapses.
Great information! I have to admit that I was pretty frustrated when I first started because I had no idea the app was restricted. But I figured out a way and then eventually upgraded to premium.
If you only use the app, it makes you think that you can't access most of the caches out there unless you're a premium member, which isn't true. That's why I created this video. Thanks for watching and commenting!
For less than a cup of coffee people can go premium. The small amount of money supports our great hobby. I’m not sure doing this is doing new players a favor. I have had so many new players frustrated that they can’t find easy caches. The terrain/diff barrier is designed to gets people’s feet wet so they don’t get discouraged. Plus the paywall in general shows a higher level of commitment and somewhat protects geocaches from mistakes of newer players and prevents muggles. My 2 cents.
I agree. I feel like it gives a poor experience to new players. It would seem there might be a better way to execute it to make more of a guided experience rather than seemingly restrictive to premium only.
Hi and thanks for watching and commenting. I was one who was a basic member for a few years and bought into premium because of my love of the hobby and to support it as well, which is why I'm a premium member to this day. Geocaching HQ has made the decision to allow basic members to access all basic member geocaches, but most (if not all) new users who start with the app don't know this. The app tells basic members to upgrade to premium membership to find basic member caches when Geocaching HQ allows these members access to these caches using the website. I recently helped a new geocaching vlogger with this tip, and she used it and thanked me for it. And after finding more caches went to premium membership. This tip didn't stop her from becoming a premium member, it helped deepen her enjoyment of the game which followed by her becoming a premium member. My video isn't meant to stop people from going to premium membership; in fact, I recommend in the video going to premium membership at 3:07. Geocaching HQ has a strong product that sells itself well, and I believe experiencing more geocaches will only help new cachers love geocaching more and increase the chance of buying into premium membership long term. Thank you for taking the time to watch and comment on my video.
@GeoElmoGeocaching Hi, me and my Wife have been Geocaching today and really enjoyed it. I'm considering going premium but not sure if I do that it will allow me to create and hide a cache via the geocaching mobile phone app as I'd love to hide loads and we don't have a PC or laptop. Is hiding a new geocache something that can be done via the app? Cheers in advance 👍
I tired this and it worked great! I loved getting a taste of the premium life without the cost 😜Being a basic member gets boring after a while and this tip can show more people the true depths of geocaching without the paywall. It's a great bridge that will make folks more likely upgrade to premium in the future instead of dropping the hobby because of "pay to win" vibes
I'm glad this worked for you! It's nice to be able to access more cache variety before you shell out the cost of premium membership, and it was nice to see that you getting access to more caches didn't take away your desire to get premium membership. Thank you for watching and commenting!
Interesting take. I never thought of doing it this way I guess because I've never had to as I've always been a premium member. But yeah, I can see how this would help out someone who isn't premium.
I first signed up for premium to hide a cache because I thought it was required, which it actually wasn't. While I have and will continue to keep premium membership, I wanted to help new cachers be able to find more caches before they signed up for premium membership. Thanks for watching and commenting!
I tried this with Cachly as well. With Cachly you can access the cache but you only can access three caches per day, I'm not sure if that's for all basic member caches or for ones above the D2/T2. Thanks for watching and commenting!
Nicely done although I wouldn't subscribe to this method. I like how you said at the end to go ahead and subscribe. It is so cheap really for what you get. It's not like it's $30 per month. It's $30 for the whole year. What other memberships in other hobbies are so inexpensive.
Thank you for your comment! This method isn't meant for you, it's meant for basic member geocachers who use the free geocaching app. I agree that premium membership is cheap and great, and I recommend it to viewers in the video. My only goal was to educate basic member geocachers about how to access via their phones all the geocaches they're entitled to access.
C:geo is only available on Android devices and I have an iPhone, so I haven't tried it (and it breaks geocaching HQ's terms of use too). I started with a Garmin eTrex H (which I painted red and turned into the Geocaching Express 6000 GPS Receiver in my GIFF entry lol) and manually entered coordinates into that! I really enjoy premium membership (especially when it's free!) but I also want people to be able to find more caches that they have access to. Thanks for watching and commenting!
i played for free for my first 2-3 years. at that point with a galaxy player android device. I used "geobeagle" and basic .loc files back then, painfull but it worked. then found out c-geo was a thing, highly recommend c-geo for android users. about 5 years ago ? i bought a etrex 30x , then used a now dead tool called "pqlibre" a 3rd party tool to generate custom pocket queries for basic members. somewhere along the way for the last 5 or 6 years i have been paying but dont play as much only 1 or 2 not lab cache finds this year.
Nice, I started with an eTrex H with no way to put in coordinates but by hand. The only buttons were up, down, enter, back, and power, what a pain! I wound up painting that receiver red and using it as a prop in my GIFF entry "The Geocaching Express 6000 GPS Receiver" lol. Thank you for watching and commenting!

Thank you John! I love my premium membership, I just want to help new geocachers be able to access the geocachers they're allowed to access!
You likely know about this, but on Android c:geo is a great way to solve this issue!

@@GeoElmoGeocaching ah, I never heard of that. it is a great user experience though :(

Thanks! Super helpful!
Sure thing! I'm happy to hear you enjoyed the video.
As of this writing (7/24/23) a visit on the Geocaching website reveals that Premium Membership is now $39.99 per year with auto renewal.

Awesome, I'm glad to hear the video helped! Happy geocaching!

Great for those that need it! However premium is well worth it but you know this anyway!
I love my premium membership also! But I wanted to help new cachers be able to find more geocaches with this video.

Wow!!! This is great information!!! Thank you 😊
I'm glad it's helpful! Thank you for taking the time to watch and comment!
How do u favourite caches
Hi, you need to be a premium member first. Once you're a premium member, then you earn one favorite point to give out for every 10 geocaches you find.
thanks ☺️
I wonder if off brand apps like Cachly shows all non-premium hides for basic members
I tried this with Cachly as well. With Cachly you can access the cache but you only can access three caches per day, I'm not sure if that's for all basic member caches or for ones above the D2/T2. Thanks for watching and commenting!
GOD BLESS YOU HOLY YOU SAVED ME AND MY FRIEND 50 DOLLARS shes my soulmate i love you
Glad I can help! Premium membership is still good to have, but I want people to be able to access the caches they are entitled to at the same time.
not working anymore
What isn't working? I can still log into my account from my phone's browser.
He’s literally showing where he is
I was showing where the cache is. I recorded the screenshots when looking for the cache and then used those screenshots in the video.

Get someone else to pay free now yayay
That's one way to do it. I hope this video helped.
Ah! Interesting. I used c:geo from the start until someone gifted me a free year of premium. Once I went premium, I continued that till this day.
