    You are one of the few people who understand the 15 speed. Most guys have not been trained properly on them and drive them as a 10 speed. A lot of clutches got burnt, and they quit making them. The 15 speed was a great transmission only if guys know how to drive it. BTW, when backing with these trucks, you should always use deep reduction. Mid range is too fast for most guys and they will burn the clutch. So, I would like to try to simplify sequential shifting for the 15 speed. Here goes: Start off in deep reduction range. Put the stick in 1st, then 2nd, then 3rd. Move the range selector to mid range (they call it low!) and move the stick back to 2nd, then 3rd, then 4th, then 5th. Then move the range selector to high, and move the stick back to 1st, then 2nd, and on up to 5th. And it's just that easy. Hope this helps. If you want to learn how to double clutch, partial clutch, and float, go to my video "3 ways to shift a 13 speed". Drive safe, and happy motoring!

      According to the RT & RTX 15 Speed instructions in my Ford L9000, you're wrong. It's deep reduction 1st to 5th. Then 4th and 5th in low. Then 6 to 10 in high.
      And if you're not Mr. Fuller himself let's not argue about this...

    Ok, always wondered, I've run 9 , 10, 13, and 18 speeds but was always told 15 is a odd transmission, for the most part you would run it like a 10 speed. Thank you for that very instructional video !!!

      15 over you can usually run it like a straight 10. High gear in each range is against the dash on my eaton fuller 15 over. The lower 5 gears are deep reduction which I very rarely ever use.

    @2:31 THIS is the key piece of info that is never made clear in other videos. When people talk about deep reduction yielding "5 gears in the basement", it makes it sound as if 5+DR is lower than standard 1 (which if true, would give 15 different speeds). Super helpful to understand that there really are only 12 different speeds-- just different combinations of achieving some that are the same.

    Really made it simple what you discuss actually was loosely stated on the pattern of the 15spd single axle ford L series dump I sat in. It said if your off road you can use all the gears in deep reduction but if your gonna progress shift it. Then only use till 3L then once you are there put the blue button forward and grab first gear and shift it then shift like a 10spd it actually said if you progressive shift on road higher than 3L damage could occur to the transmission

    If you have an engine with a narrow power band and want to work off and on road a 15 spd is the BEST trans you’ll find. It has the super low hole like an 8LL but has far closer ratios for keeping speed on the road where an 8LL Puts the gears too far apart. A 13 or 18 speed doesn’t have a low enough first gear to do much good in the dirt. Plus in theory there’s less to go wrong in a 15, you move the shifter through all 3 ranges instead of using a button every other shift like on an 18.

    • @J.R.in_WV
      @J.R.in_WV 4 роки тому +3

      Taylor Alldredge the 18 speed is the best all around trans you’ll find but they are expensive to spec and dumber drivers may not do too well with them. Now the RTO/RTX 15 and RTO/RTX 8ll both have the same ratio top gear so you won’t gain any top speed. Where the 15 helps out is it basically has 2 extra “in between” gears that the 8 doesn’t. To shift a RTO 15 progressively you’d go deep reduction 1-2-3 then out of deep reduction and into 2nd then up to 10th. As far as longevity I’ve found the 8LL’s to be the best. I have an RTO (high gear toward the dash) 8ll In my dump truck and it’s the perfect trans for a dump truck, but our lowboy tractor has an RTO 15 speed in it and it’s a better trans in that application (VERY heavy). It’s all about what you wanna do. As far as being friendly for hired drivers an Allison auto is always a good choice, way less chance of a cowboy tearing out a rear end or clutch with an auto.

      @@J.R.in_WVabsolutely not... The 13 speed is the best all around transmission out there. Unless you're hauling extreme weight constantly the 18 speed is a waste. You'll never use half the holes unless you just love shifting for no good reason. The 15 speed was the absolute worst. If you're not in pulling in the mud it's useless. No wonder they got rid of em.

      Dr Frantz Thanks for the feedback! Like I mentioned in the video, I'm not sure of the exact ratios, but practically speaking, just imagine that the deep reduction gear you're in is two ratios below the gear position you're in. DR 3rd, 4th and 5th are simply duplicates of your standard 1st, 2nd and 3rd gears.

    I had a 4964 ex star car with an n 14 plus and 15 speed. The salesman at WS of demoine Iowa didnt know how to shift it and I was used to a a 10 speed but the deep reduction didnt make sense. I asked every driver who said they knew a 15 speed and all I always got was I never use deep reduction or just take it out and grind it into a low range gear. I always used it to 4th DR then preselect (blue pill) and shift to 3rd low range which is an upshift, and away I would go. Dont select DR when your rolling pretty good in low range or youll about go through the windshield because it will drop 2 gears NOW.

      I am going to be Spec’ing some Dump Trucks. I want Transmissions with a Overdrive and have been considering a 10, 13, 15, & even 18 Spd’s. The 15 Spd caught My Attention. I want that Overdrive on the way back home. I want something different than a 8LL. Seems 15 Spd’s were more common in Mechanical & 2000 & Older Trucks.

      @ Sorry, the 15 spd doesnt seem to be used any more. I would think it is a good tranny for a dump truck because it allows you to crawl around gravel pits loaded at slow speeds (to a walk if you want) and climb out without working the engine. You have to be careful because when you select deep reduction from the low range it immediately drops in and squats the truck (you drop 2 gears instantly). 1.5 million miles and never had an issue with it.

    I'm confused about something, since I've never driven a 15 before, let alone an American truck. I would assume by the name "Deep Reduction" that it is the LOWER of the two gears in that position. i.e., "Five High/Five Low". But then you say flip the splitter "forward" for DR. Wouldn't that be the higher gear then? I'm lost. Is DR the higher or lower gear?

    • @n8bolton
      @n8bolton  2 роки тому

      It’s a little bit counter-intuitive but yes, pushing the splitter forward while in low range is how you reach the deep reduction ratios. You’re right, though, that typically that’s not the way most other transmissions work.

    Unless people had a chance to pull 140K Lbs or heavier, people don't understand the need of momentum.
    You can have engine power to pull and because of lack of momentum you can't shift or you are on a grade inclination and because the torck force from the engine is too quickly engaged by the heavy load it does nothing but shake the cab violently without going anywhere.
    That's when Lo-lo and Lo-hi gears are handy in an 18 speed and deep reduction in 15 comes so handy to make that power- torck transition.
    This power-torck transition is the reason why authomatic transmitions are useless in pulling heavy loads. By the time the sensors sence something wrong the whole thing goes bust.

I'm not a trucker, but I completely fail to see the need for all these stupid switches and modes and splits when you can just have a 5, 6, or 7-speed H-pattern with a high and low range of all roughly evenly spaced and NON-redundant gears. Or even better, a 4 or 5-speed H pattern with a 3-position low/med/high range of NON-redundant gears for a total of 12 and 15 speeds, respectively, based on what kinds of loads or conditions a truck is working with. 18 speeds just seem like unnecessary overkill with no benefit.

      There isn't an "11-15". There's a deep reduction 1-5. That's what I'm trying to help people understand. A 15-speed is a glorified 10-speed with 5 ultra-low gears that overlap the normal low range gears. Most drivers would never shift a 15 any different than they would a 10.

      When you're in low range, pushing the blue switch on the shifter forward gets you into the low-low gears, which you can shift in exactly the same pattern as 1-5. Simply pulling the switch back brings you back into your normal low range.

    If you can drive 1, you can drive em all. It’s all the same shit, you move a stick into different holes and split gears lol nothing different there except just a matter of how many gears can you split and that’s literally it

    Lol you talk way toooooooooo muuuuuuuuuuuuch!!! Like so bad!! Gonna keep it simple? Lol no you didn’t but I’ve got years on this and I’ll make it simple for the people who really need to learn. 5+5=10speed……split 6-10 and now you essentially have an additional 5 gears which 5x3=15. Difference between a 18, 15 and a 13 speed is 13 you split a few, 15 you split a few gears but 18 you can split all the gears. Red splitter 13 speed, blue splitter 15 speed and grey splitter switch 18 speed. There ya go all summed up into 1 paragraph lol your welcome

      15 speed has no spitter button it has deep reduction which can only be used on low side you can only progressively shift 12 gears
